I've noticed that some nurses make no effort at tidying the patient's room. I just think it's nice not to leave half opened stuff strewn all over, old newspapers, wadded up tape, full bedside bags, alcohol swab wrappers, dirty bath blankets in a heap, assorted linens, emesis basins filled with thick green sputum,
I don't like walking into a disaster zone when I come on, particularly after what sounds like a not too bad of shift. I also notice that sometimes the nurses station will look like a pigsty. I'll see the same book left out on the counter for days, left unclaimed. People leave undrunk drinks and leave celebrity magazines everywhere.
Thanks for listening.

Hey, you never know. My boyfriend is being kind of a doofus.
And man, I WISH I had taken a "before" picture of my apartment before I started my current cleaning extravaganza so you guys could really see what I meant. No. Visible. Floor. And some piles higher than my head. It'll be Martha Stewart ready by sunrise at the rate I'm going tonight. I'm rewarding myself with q45min allnurses breaks.

agreed. our rooms have drawers too with supplies...it drives me nuts when i open the drawers and cant even see the bottom for all the junk shoved in them..or open the bottom drawer and find linens shoved in there....or my all time fav....we typically have those pink bath tubs (which are great for puke too) and we leave them in the room under the sink. It was dark one night and i went to grab the tub very qucikly...dumped out the bath supplied on the counter..whoever had put it away last never dumped the old bath water out...had thrown the supplies in with the water and put it under the sink..............
i always grab new bags of MIVF for the next shift...empty the trash and linen bags and make sure my room is organized and clean...oh and i make sure my pt isnt dirty, with dirty sheets, hanging half out of the bed...lead coming off..IV pumps beeping...............
I had a few parents complain about messes left in their rooms during the night. It's dark and the night shift RNs try not to make any noise. However, sometimes in the morning I find laundry strewn across the floor, wrappers and empty syringes everywhere, old cups and food trays from dinner the previous night. When I worked nights I made an effort to put all trash in my pockets so that I could toss it out on the way out of the room. As far as laundry, there is a bin in every room so there's no excuse for that. Some messes are annoying, and others are just plain gross!

Girl, you sound just like me!! It takes me a few days to recover in between shifts and I tell ya, those days in between....I'm just glad I live alone. But then, I'll just get disgusted and spend 4-5+ hours making everything spotless (only to turn around and have it a mess again within 2 days!).
I think I gotcha beat though. Spilled a pretty good amount of blue cheese on the floor last night. It's still there. BUT ONLY FOR NOW! Martha Stewart look out!
I also found that tidying up the room gave me some time to talk to the patient... like really talk and not just problem focused...something there is little time for lately!:nuke:
Nothing makes a lonely little ol' lady happier than a cheery discussion whilst tidying her over-bed tray. I can't stand to just stand still, so this gives me an excuse to spend more time. Don't you just want to jump out of your keds if you just STAND and talk?

Elizabells,
You are SO on target. I'd post a picture of Candy (my pretty red 2003 Cavalier that will finally be paid off the same month I graduate), but she needs a trip to the car spa. The busy student nurse lifestyle has not agreed with her and where she was once known as the 'most expensive CD player Bec ever bought', she is now known as 'the county auxillary landfill'.
Now that I think about it, I don't think that she's had the Georgia pine sap cleaned off in two years!
But leave a mess in a client's room? NO! Housekeeping hates me...I keep stealing the mops and the wet floor signs.
edited to add: OK. Maybe I am having some delegation issues......
