was workin one of my part time er gigs at a local hospital today. well there was alittle shoot out in the local hood. bunch of shots fired but only one fella got hit. ems brings in this cat 28yo with two gun shot wounds one to lt upper abd and rt bicep with now exit wounds. to be honest it was sort of tense for the first 30-45min. guy was hypotn and squirtin blood out the arm wound pretty good. what i saw while we were cuttin clothes off him was the usual thug like tats and items. now this guy was known to a few er techs of being a local bad ass sort of a bully. well i think he lost his rep cuase this cat was screamin and cryin like a baby the whole time...he was literally yellin for his mama and begin us to save his life. i was told this was the same fella that spent 4 yrs in state pen for armed theft and assualt and rumored murders..now he was lying supine in truama room #2 crying, begin for his mamma. if it wasnt for hippa i would have videoed his thug ass and posted it on youtube for the world to see what a tough fella this cat was....now before all you bleedin heart nurses get on here and blast me for pokin fun at a patient who was in pain let me defend my actions by saying it was funny crap and i'll do it again when a meat head wannabe gangsta comes kickin and screamin after being shot, cut or beatdown into the er pleadin for his momma...now thats funny:lol2: i dont care who you are... post note, cat went to surgey speenectomy, arterial graph to arm, off the vent restin nicely in the unit on morphine pca, best part is im paying the ******* bill!!!!!!
I think what C-Diff was bringing to light was the fact that this gangsta has probably portrayed to be sometype of badass his whole life and enjoyed always taking from little helpless people. But once the tables were turned to be not in his favor he was no longer the big tough guy but in essence became a little scared child crying for his mother. I too find that very ironic and somewhat funny, for I have whitness many a innocent bystander being rushed into the very ER's that I have traveled to throughout the south. Their crime was just being in the wrong place at the wrong time when these "thugs" were trying to kill each other. As far as being jaded..please. I became jaded after my first year in nursing.
It's not just you. This southern girl from the east thought the manner of expression was annoying to no end.If you are working with this "cat", it should have four paws, purr and would have no HIPAA rights.
It really is a bit silly to be putting down "thugs", using "thug" like language, punctuation, and grammar. I can deal with the need to vent, and you don't need to be an Oxford scholar but try to look at least minimally better educated than those that you "be dissin".
Please, I have seen much worse posts than C-Diffs concerning sentence structure and the like...But it seems his lack of propper sentence syntax and correct standard English did not prevent you from reading his post and even understanding it enough to post a reply of your own. Climb off your educational high horse.
With all the different cultures and languages experienced on Allnurses, I am fairly relaxed about the way we articulate. However, this site is well know among other medical forums and people other than nurses such as other allied providers, physicians, midlevels, patients and family members among prospective nursing students visit this forum. The forum is open to the public and people do notice what is written and said here, like it or not. Some sites love to loose the plot and go crazy when interesting topics pop up at Allnurses. Therefore, we are representing our profession when we post here. Clearly, we cannot control what others are going to say; however, it is always worth a consideration before hitting the post button.
Sooo......how 'bout them Saints??????
:rotfl: that's so funny. . . nuthin' to see here folks. . . move right along. .
GilaRN - I think you are right that we (or at least I) forget we are essentially a room without walls, and also people who've been hanging out here and are used to the sarcasm, etc., don't imagine that people who wander in and ask questions - sometimes provoke a pile-on. We had a young lady ask a question about her boyfriend feeling insecure re: her taking care of "naked men"-- she was called a troll and a moron-- she just posted a sad little response about how she was treated here and wandered away probably forever.
OTOH-- this is a place for nurses to blow off steam and commiserate. Where else is there to go?? I think most people do a decent job of policing themselves. The public will always find something they'll find fault with. I don't want to be asking myself all the time if my post would be suitable for publishing in the Ladies Home Journal -- snooze. . .:)

It didn't take that long for me. And anyone that has been in the field longer than a couple years that says they aren't jaded is either lying or deluded (IMHO). After a while, it happens. Might not be intentional, but it happens.
OK, I said it. Flame on!
I just wanna say that last night I saved the life of a pediphile who tried to off himself after his wife caught him molesting their 3 yo daughter. He will probably recover fine...that little girl NEVER will.I challange anyone here to do this without being judgemental...I'm sorry but I did not feel anything when he told me that he was in pain. The scum actually told me that I was hot.If you ever accomplish something like this without being judgemental I will take this all back, but until you walk a mile in our shoes...please don't judge us.It really hard not to be judgemental at times, esp when these thugs induce their own pain. I see at least 5 gsws a week and many are repeat offenders, but guess what...they ALL get the same care from me...just maybe without any extras. I keep it all in then I vent to my co-workers or on this forum. What surprised me about this post is how very judgemental some are being to the OP...what's that saying about glass houses?Come work in the ER- I dare you.

I hate to tell you, but it has little to do with working the ER.
After you stabilize them, even when you have to deal with the "repeat visitors", ER gets to ship them to the floors where the charmers get to spend days/weeks/sometimes monthes and even more dealing with them and the bad behavior, problematic visitors and noncompliance. The gang member that gets himself shot, ending up a paraplegic with colonoscopy, is going to returning on a regular basis, and is invariably after a few trips, going to impossible to place, obtain followup care or home health, without which they cannot be discharged. The also rarely are insured, thus we are having take care of them on the public dime. And even if they get jailed, unless it is for something truly heinous, they often receive "compassionate" release, especially if they get a longterm expensive illness. So the floors, with less security, have to deal with them.
Don't think the ER has cornered the mark on "jaded". But even if one is "jaded", I still prefer my coworkers to express themselves as the educated responsible professionals that they are. Acting talking like those that you do not respect...for whatever reason...really just brings one down to their level...or lower since you know better.
Get off my "high horse", I think not....better to stay out of the dirt. Besides, I've always liked my horses.

Sooo disagree with you caroladybelle, but thats the fun of a forum, different opinions. Having worked the ER as well as the ICU's where these pillars of society end up for a month on end, and back from the floor and out again, does little to compare what happens in an ER. Having worked an inner city ER myself, I can safely tell you that my floor experiences pale in comparison to what out ER peers go through and our floor took all the medical prisioners from the county hospital. God love our ER nurses.
Please remember these people here are NOT YOUR COWORKERS verbally expressing themselves on the clock. They are in the safety of an internet forum that may be used for venting, and thier style of vent and words do not have to meet your expectations.

Kudos to you for putting your distaste for his actions aside to the degree that you could provide good nursing care for him. It is NOT easy, every, in any job, to put aside personal feelings and judgements. It is true that we meet some pretty unsavory characters in health care, and the ED usually gets to meet them first and more often.

Thanks Altra. I do want to be clear that I do not believe my experiences make my opinions more valid or important than other people's opinions. I do utilise my experiences to make points; however. With that, I would agree with some people that my world view is somewhat serious and negative. I do not see my self lightening up any time soon.
This thread emphasizes a deeper point other than crybaby gangbangers IMHO. We are not doing ourselves any favors by telling students their opinions do not count. We should look at what students are saying. Clearly, we are not educating our new nurses on the realities they face. We are good at telling them do not judge and do not think poorly of other people. However, that is unrealistic and at odds with human nature. Instead we need to be educating students on the realities of what they will face and be honest about how they will react emotionally to some of the situations they will encounter.
