was workin one of my part time er gigs at a local hospital today. well there was alittle shoot out in the local hood. bunch of shots fired but only one fella got hit. ems brings in this cat 28yo with two gun shot wounds one to lt upper abd and rt bicep with now exit wounds. to be honest it was sort of tense for the first 30-45min. guy was hypotn and squirtin blood out the arm wound pretty good. what i saw while we were cuttin clothes off him was the usual thug like tats and items. now this guy was known to a few er techs of being a local bad ass sort of a bully. well i think he lost his rep cuase this cat was screamin and cryin like a baby the whole time...he was literally yellin for his mama and begin us to save his life. i was told this was the same fella that spent 4 yrs in state pen for armed theft and assualt and rumored murders..now he was lying supine in truama room #2 crying, begin for his mamma. if it wasnt for hippa i would have videoed his thug ass and posted it on youtube for the world to see what a tough fella this cat was....now before all you bleedin heart nurses get on here and blast me for pokin fun at a patient who was in pain let me defend my actions by saying it was funny crap and i'll do it again when a meat head wannabe gangsta comes kickin and screamin after being shot, cut or beatdown into the er pleadin for his momma...now thats funny:lol2: i dont care who you are... post note, cat went to surgey speenectomy, arterial graph to arm, off the vent restin nicely in the unit on morphine pca, best part is im paying the ******* bill!!!!!!

I find it more depressing than funny. Then again, I am not at a point where I get my jollies watching people with critical injuries suffer. At least not at the point where I care to share it on a public forum. Yes, some things are funny and we utilise humor to cope, we just need to be careful how far we take this humor.
I guess after some of my experiences like tough guy Afghan nationals taking 7.62*39's through the neck, the humor is sometimes lost.

Don't judge unless you've walked a mile in their shoes.
If working EMS in south central Los Angeles taught me anything, it was this... that all people generally try to pick the best of the choices available to them in life. I'm where I am in part because I had some pretty damn good choices available to me. Not everyone is so fortunate.

Wow, you've only been practising for 2 years and you're already that jaded? That's sad.

That's just typical of men period (thug or not). Men fail in general when they get sick/injured. I have NEVER seen a woman cry for her mama.

I'll give you that choosing to be a thug may be his best option with regard to reward/effort ratio. Perhaps if he'd been given access to lucrative white collar crime, he'd career path would differ.

Okay, being a nurse for 18 years with many years in ER and pre-hospital - all I can say is that if you are this jaded, maybe its time to find something else.
Regardless of what/where/why this guy was shot, he IS someone's son and family member and he deserves proper care.
He doesn't deserve to be videotaped and put on YouTube!
This is also a lot of personal info about this pt - its easy to find folks on the internet and would doubt you want your hospital knowing you are posting this on the internet.

All bullies are at the very base of their being giant COWARDS. The only thing I don't agree with is that business about all men crying for their mama's. It is true a lot of them would but not all. I have seen many men and women and CHILDREN face death with grace and courage.

To be honest guys, I was just formulating in my mind a thread idea about how stereotypes go both ways. I was feeling that for every estrogen-driven drama queen female post the men complain about, there are just as many flip, smart @ss one-liners I would complain about made by the guys.
This OP has it in spades. A couple of you surprised me, though with your compassionate responses. And while I'm no big fan of thugs, I guess I"ll hold my fire on that thread idea. :)
