This week, I learned.... (7/25)

This week, I have learned....

1. Meth is a hell of a drug.

2. When meth is combined with cocaine and booze, it can destroy a 28 year old heart.

3. When you have one random patient across the unit from your other patients, and that patient is the only patient without psych issues, that poor patient is unfortunately going to be a bit neglected.

4. A discharge with EMS transport, ICU transfer and admission happening simultaneously (literally all less than 5 minutes apart from one another) 2 hours before you're supposed to be giving report means you'll be giving report before your last round of (very late) meds will be given.

5. Never been happier for vacation time. (Today is day 4/15.)

6. All play and no work makes ixchel a very happy girl. :)

That's all I got this week! Not much to learn when all I've been doing is playing! :)

What have you learned this week?

I learned that freakishly low census in July is a wonderful thing. I've worked a grand total of three shifts this month at my PICU job. (I volunteer for low census days as my single mom co-corkers cannot take the hit.)

I learned that situations like this ^^^^^ are a great reason to have more than one job.

I learned that 'chin length, blunt cut bob' means one thing in my mind- quite another in the mind of the stylist with the scissors...... :(

1. I'm sorry about your Dad.

2. 32 is YOUNG(er than me) I can be your young, unwed Mom!

3. Depends on your husband

Thanks. 66 years old, healthy and very strict about what he ate. Well mom said bye that night going for her shift (she's a nurse)...next morning she comes, he was gone. Died in his sleep. Coroner said, advanced Atherosclerosis. No other signs, he had a physical a few months before and saw his Cardiologist who said he was fine..yeah!

Husband is saying he will be fine but will see..:)

I learned that I really really really need a nice long break from work.

I learned that I am very lucky to work for a great DON/ADON team. LTC nursing is hard but they go above and beyond for the nurses and they have our backs. I have friends working in other facilities who are not so lucky.

I learned that I can now honestly wish for my kid to grow up faster because I am sick of the teenage attitude, angst, and drama. It is so karma because I put my own mother through hell as a teen.

1. I'm sorry to hear about your dad. You can get great emotional support here and some laughs.

2. I'm 30 and while some days I may feel old I know I am indeed not old.

3. It's good that your husband cares for your choices enough to hold down the fort. Mine forced me to go back to school.

1. Reading the heart wrenching thread has made me realize how thankful I should be that he did not suffer.

2. I wish I could be 30 again..:)

3. Are you in school right now? Let's hope he really holds down the fort. 11 and 5 year old, not babies but it's a lot of work:)

1. If you remove the metal front plate from one of these, it has a plywood back, is quite heavy, and can be used to break a security camera and try to dig your way out of a double locked behavioral health unit. If you're playing along at home and recall I had a patient burrow into another patient's room last week, this is the same patient. He's very creative. 1. That I'm finally actually a nurse, and that feels darn good.

2. That nobody should judge another's educational path. Mine is just as valid as the next persons.

3. Finding a job isn't hard, finding one you want is.

4. Rugrats was created by fans of Doctor Who. My mind was blown by that.

I am in school right now. Start nursing in January, last Gen Ed class in the fall. I've been part-timing it because my husband works in other state so I have to do school and fort holding.

ETA- I have 9 year old twins and a 3 year old.

1. Congratulations on finishing nursing school.

2. If you don't mind me asking, which path did you take? I worry about being judged since I want to do the Accelerated BSN or Entry Level MSN. I will be applying to both.

Does anyone else have a sound byte about going on a safari without a passport or shots playing on their desktop?

It's driving me insane I had to turn off my sound.

1) being fired by a patient can really brighten my day

2) a good CNA is worth their weight in gold. I did not have a good CNA today.

3) Never believe someone when they say discharge teaching had already been completed.

4) The new doctors on my floor appear to be terrified of comfort cares/hospice type orders. Seriously, I just want robinul. Maybe morphine if the SOB gets worse. Just write the order. Hell, I'll enter the order, just say yes.

I actually became an LPN/VN first. I finished my RN prereqs a little over a year ago and applied to two programs, a PN and an RN. I got into the PN. I took the seat because bridge seats where I live rarely fill, and I can now work in my chosen second career while I complete my RN.

The thing I learned, honestly, is I'm proud of the title I earned. I could stay where I am and be happy and grateful and proud that I got here.

Don't worry about what anyone thinks but you.
