12/12 This week I have learned (as I struggle to stay awake)

Published

I have very little to share this week. Truth is, it's been the hardest week I've had in a very long time.

This week, I have learned (relearned):

Mental health crises do affect all of us at some time.

It's a good idea to have Life Crisis's phone number and a local phone number for a local group similar to life crisis saved in your phone whether you think you'll need it or not.

Hyper vigilant anxiety/stress will leave you utterly exhausted. It might also rip up your tummy.

We still have so much further to go before the stigma is removed from mental illness and the medications used to help treat those who need them.

Forgive the abbreviated post. I hope your week has treated you well!

Michigan is having the same 60 degree weather. Just strange.

NY too... :bag:

And it's 43 in southern Nevada.

I've learned that I have grown a back bone since becoming an ER nurse and that I'm going to stick up for my (and other people's) patients if I need to. If a little old lady that has been stuck 8 times by ER staff for a line and blood still doesn't have any IV access and blood work obtained and she's sick enough to be admitted, I'm going to tell the ER Doctor I already have the ultrasound and central line kit set up in the room and I'll be waiting for him in said room. He showed up 5 minutes later ready to put in a central line. Lol Sometimes we've just gotta grow a back bone and tell them what the patient needs and push them because they don't wanna do it. I'm sorry (note sarcasm) to pull you away from Instagram to take care of a patient buttttt that's what you're being paid for. Come on.

Also, ADPIE.

It's 37 out here in the desert. I actually had to wear a coat!

I've learned that im too nice.

Without techs turning and bathing is nearly impossible! My hospital was just bought by a new company and they fired 7 techs on my floor. We now only get 2 techs to 32 patients.

I've learned that many people are applying to new hospitals since we were bought and they don't like they changes.

I'm a newbie in a contract, so I stay.

Oh, it's 40 degrees here in arizona!

This week I learned that my unit is not doing a good job of explaining to parents that what we do to their kids is all palliative, not curative. And they can die at any moment even if they look fine.

Peds CVICU is a beast, I want to love it but it's so taxing.

Sadly many healthcare providers (especially physicians) are AWFUL at explaining pt's terminal status, palliative care, etc. This places nurses and techs in a tough spot.
