QuoteThe abortion law builds on legislation passed in 2010 that represented a major shift for a traditionally Catholic country, transforming Spain into one of the most progressive countries in Europe on reproductive rights. Spain's constitutional court last week rejected a challenge by the right-wing Popular Party against allowing abortions in the first 14 weeks of pregnancy.
The debate will be heated in Spain, I imagine, as the conservative opposition pushes back. My daughter had horrible menstrual pain during her adolescence and young adulthood. I'm certain that she would have benefitted from that time.

I'm not aware of any FTM's competing in and dominating male competitions. Why is that, so you think?
In the case of many sports, including competitive high school track and field as referenced above, why not the bio males compete against each other and the females compete against each other? Everyone's included. Maybe you can explain how my take on that (and Subee and Tweety's too I believe, and most Americans) is 19th century European thinking?
As I mentioned, there doesn't seem to be any FTM's dominating any males in any sport. Seems to kinda back up those scientific dictums that you don't want to believe, dontchya think?
Yup!
heron said:Dude, I think you might want to take one of your deep dives on the biology of psycho-sexual development and gender as social construct. You seem to have stalled out somewhere in 19th century Europe.
Meanwhile, how interesting to note that while trans denialists are losing their minds over MTF minors playing sports, yet not a peep over FTMs. Why is that, so you think? Years ago, there was a website named butch / femme.com that had a fairly sizable contingent of transpeople. They had sime intense debates in the gender theory threads. The site went defunct before they could even come close to a consensus, but the debate itself was fascinating.
Subee is perfectly capable of explaining herself if she chooses to do so. For me, the current sniping over gender identity is irrelevant, in part, because it assumes as true certain scientific dictums that are turning out to be inaccurate and/or incomplete. Another part is that the whole gender identity controversy centers on the theoretical offenses against cis people. No bueno.
Gender and biological sex is different. Gender is a construct. Bio men construct their gender as woman while not being able to define what a woman is but will always be bio men.

QuoteAll but one of 23 beers sampled for toxic Pfas "forever chemicals" contained the compounds, new research finds, raising safety questions about one of the world's most popular beverages.
The researchers checked craft beer from multiple states, major domestic brands, and several international labels.
When possible, they compared the measurements to Pfas levels in the county water supply where each was bottled, revealing a "strong correlation" that suggests contaminated water is driving most of the problem. The levels were often above some drinking water limits for Pfas.
QuoteThe levels detected in the beer were as high as 40 parts per trillion (ppt). Drinking water limits for several common Pfas compounds are between four and 10 ppt, though drinking water is more of a risk because people generally consume more of it.
The highest levels were detected in beer brewed in the Cape Fear River Basin in North Carolina, where the environment has been thoroughly contaminated by Pfas largely stemming from a Chemours chemical plant in Fayetteville. Beer produced there showed some chemicals made at the Chemours plant, and generally contained a wider variety of Pfas compounds.
Chemours is a proud donor to Trump and Republican political figures. That's benefited them.
QuoteToday, EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin announced that the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) was rolling back protections on PFAS in drinking water. The rules, set by the Biden administration last year, would have required the removal of six prevalent types of PFAS from drinking water systems throughout the country. Zeldin intends to rescind limits on four of those – PFHxS, PFNA, HFPO-DA (known as GenX) and PFBS – while delaying the remaining two (PFOA and PFOS). The compliance deadline for the limits on PFOA and PFOS will be delayed for two years, until 2031, and a new rule will be issued that also establishes a federal exemption framework.
Quote"Today's decision is a shameful and dangerous capitulation to industry pressure that will allow continued contamination of our drinking water with toxic PFAS. This will cost lives.
"Zeldin and the Trump administration are illegally gutting basic water safety protections, blaming the cost of upgrades to comply with those important public health rules. Yet just last week the administration proposed to virtually eliminate the main source of federal funding that would help make the necessary water system improvements to protect from PFAS.
"Once again, the Trump administration has demonstrated that its priority is bending to corporate interests, not protecting the safety and wellbeing of everyday people. Nothing is safe from Trump's greed-driven agenda — not even our drinking water.”
QuoteToday's decision to rollback the Biden EPA's rules was in response to a consolidated lawsuit from water utility associations and industrial associations, including the National Association of Manufacturers, the American Chemistry Council and Chemours. The chemical lobby has long-fought regulations on these toxic substances, while not disclosing a growing body of evidence linking their products to serious health problems. A Food & Water Watch report found the chemical industry spent more than $110 million from 2019-2022 alone on lobbying Congress on scores of bills, including many to address the crisis of PFAS contamination throughout the country. The Trump administration has stacked the EPA with former executives and staff from the American Chemistry Council, including Nancy Beck and Lynn Ann Dekleva and lawyers like David Fotouhi, who have defended companies from PFAS pollution claims.

Wrong. The problem with black/white thinking (aside from the fact that it's quite primitive) is that it cannot account for the existence of gray. So, you don't bother and try to bully the world into believing a false reality. Kinda like QAnon and flat earthers that way.
Trump's rollercoaster tariff situation is not surprising these days and is expected. He's doubling tariffs on imported steel and will undo Biden's ban on a merger with Nippon Steel, although it will remain under US control. (Not sure how that works).
I'm also wondering about his promise of $5,000 bonuses to steel workers but couldn't find much about that yet.
Quote"Given these challenging international conditions that show no signs of improvement, this tariff action will help prevent new surges in imports that would injure American steel producers and their workers,” Kevin Dempsey, president of the American Iron and Steel Institute, said in a statement.

Understandably, the EU isn't happy and considers some counter tariffs. And so it goes.

QuoteUS stocks rebounded from early losses Friday, capping off a volatile but strong month. The S&P 500 (^GSPC) logged its best May since 1990 and its best month since Nov. 2023, rising over 6%, while the Dow (^DJI) added 4% over the month and the Nasdaq (^IXIC) surged nearly 10%, thanks to tech sector strength.
I'm really happy to read the stock market has done well. For me having a good month is a good thing but looking at my personal funds (and this is just me) while it's risen significantly, I still haven't recovered from the huge losses earlier in the year. The max my funds were was on January 31 and then went down and then up from there.
The caveat is that I'm only $3K lower than 1/31 so it's not that bad. Usually after five months I would see some growth and at my age that's what I hope for.
Musk finishes his tenure as mostly a failure in my opinion. I do think however his use of ketamine for depression is a private matter. I talked at length with one of my patients last year that was receiving the therapy and he said it was the only thing that helped him deal with his depression and some major stressors.
There are also reports of him using other recreational drugs though. Is he eccentric in his behavior or high?

Federal contracts aren't generally awarded to companies headed by people who smoke cannabis on podcasts for attention and carry around their recreational drugs in a decorative box. Trump's administrations are different though. Ronny Jackson developed quite a reputation for promoting a chemically enhanced white house during his time serving Trump.

QuoteMany federal contractors and all federal grantees are required by law to establish and maintain a drug-free workplace policy.
The most important piece of legislation regulating federal contractors and grantees is the Drug-free Workplace Act of 1988 (PDF | 210 KB). Under the act, a drug-free workplace policy is required for:
Any organization that receives a federal contract of $100,000 or more
Any organization receiving a federal grant of any size
At minimum, Musk should have to sit before a congressional oversight committee. Should we expect Marge Green to invite him to her DOGE oversight subcommittee? Hahaha
QuoteU.S. energy firms this week cut the number of oil and natural gas rigs operating for a fifth week in a row to the lowest since November 2021, energy services firm Baker Hughes (BKR.O), opens new tab said in its closely followed report on Friday.
It was the first time since September 2023 that the number of rigs declined for five straight weeks.

No transgirls are not dominating in high-school sports.
Meanwhile, very popular "conservative" Podcaster Andrew Tate is awaiting extradition for his rape and trafficking charges. He's a good example of masculinity in the era of Trump when we're being told we need to protect women and girls from trans athletes or drag queens.
