Hello everyone, I live 20 minutes east of NYC. I am thinking of starting my pre-reqs and going into nursing. I used to be a science teacher for eight years and I quit that to work in corporate america. Everyone in person tells me a nursing job will be easy to get, however when i go to internet forums every one I read says new grads will not get a job in two years time when i am done being a new grad. Is this true? Will i have to move to upstate new york to get a job in order to gain experience to come back downstate in two years? I want to make a transition to nursing but I am not sure with all the negativity i read on the internet about finding a job is making me question this decision.

Well, you pretty much already know the answers - you stated them in your original post. I am from NYC and I can tell everything you heard is almost true.
Yes, most likely as a new grad, you may have to move elsewhere to get that "precious" experience, and then, as you stated, move back home. However, it is not to say that as a new grad you have absolutely no chances of getting an RN job in or around the city. It will take tremendous effort, time, and patience to do so.

Wait? Isn't 20 minutes east of NYC the Atlantic Ocean?

You can most certainly obtain a job, try to get a bachelors it will make you life a lot easier though. All of my friends who recently received associates from nassau community college got jobs within 6 months. I would say its an easy task but IF you really want to be a nurse, you will make it happen no matter what part of NY your in by perseverance!
Thank you for your replies! I have a friend who is close to starting nursing school with a younger sister who got a job right out of college last year. In my building at work is montiefore medical center back offices. I know the bosses there, they tell me new grads with bachelors find jobs right away even in the downstate metro area. I dont understand why there is so much bad vibes online about not finding a job, are they bad applicants or people without BSNs? I dont know everyone's individual situations. Eeveryone i talk to in real life tells me not to worry and with a bachelors you can find a job in the bronx, LI, or NYC area right out of school. I am thinking about finishing up my prereqs at nassau and trying to get into lehman for my one year BSN. Any more opinions would really help me out! Thank you all again for your time!!!
Lehman does not have a generic one year program - it is two year program. Unless you are talking about the accelerated BSN, then yes, it is one year program.

To get a job is easy if you will not be picky. I mean not a job in a hospital but smth like a visiting nurse, private duty, homecare. And not picky also means to be ready to work in a bad place, through an agency, for a lower pay, maybe long travel...

There are definitely jobs for the new graduates, especially if you draw a great picture of your clinical experiences and love for nursing. Best wishes!

Probably a little of column A/a little of column B.

Both of the nursing schools in my area increased the amount of people accepted per semester because of the demand for nurses so there are definitely jobs. I think the issue may be is that a lot of hospitals require previous experience for certain nursing schools so you will have to start off in the ER or ICU most likely.
