Quick story....someone I know who is an RN (BSN), but volunteers with the food services department at our hospital just because she wants to. A really unique individual as I know no other RN’s that would do that in fear of being looked down on. Anyway, one day she was delivering meals to a med/surg floor ( she does not work on this unit so keep in mind no one knows shes is a nurse) and some smart a** nurse thought it would be funny to put her down in front of other staff and some p.t.’s telling her how "uneducated she is for doing this kind of work." My friend pulled out her badge that had RN all over it, and apparently this other nurse turned pale white ( probably just knowing what a colossal screw up she made:eek: ). Anyway long story short she turned her in to the Unit manager, and from what I understand was promptly " transferred". I personally have never seen this person again. Just a good reason why you should be careful how you talk to others .You never know who you are talking to.

You're right. You never know. And you never know how it might come back to you or how sometime down the road, the tables may turn. There's something to be said about the saying, "What goes around, comes around". Most people get in trouble because of what comes out of their mouth.

very interesting but the point should be not that you never know who you are talking to just don't talk that way to people in general. i always felt you should respect your coworkers, it doesn't matter if it's fellow nurses, dietary, housekeeping,md's, cashiers, rt's,etc.

Thanks for sharing. What a terrible thing to say to someone no matter who they are. I always make it a point to thank volounteers. Anyone who gives of their time is better than I.

People can be huge jerks, can't they? I try very hard to watch my mouth, but I can't say I've never put my foot in there. But I have never looked down on anyone for the job they do! I can't believe that someone would do that! And in front of other people, too. I'm glad she did that to your friend, who could throw it back in her face and make HER look like the fool (rather than someone who might have been very hurt by it)! Good for your friend for not letting that slide!

Very true...I experience this a lot at my current job as a carer. Im in my last year of nursing but make a point of not spreading this around. It's funny the way I get treated before people know Im an RN student which is pretty crapy but as soon as they find out they change their tune. I think its really sad that people treat others like this - I have so much respect for the AIN's, cleaners, kitchen staff and will always carry this through my career in nursing. If I saw someone speaking like this to a fellow team member I would be sure to step in and let them know that it's not on!

That's EXACTLY how it is at our nursing home. Dietary is looked down upon, but a lot of them keep transfering to CNA's, so pretty soon they won't have anything to laugh at if the entire staff transfered from dietary! The basic concept is "we can hire any idiot for $7/hr but nurses and CNA's are different...

This reminds me of something a friend of my did... we both can't stand when people are in a public place talking loudly on their cell phones as if no one else matters! Well anyhoo, we were in the grocery store for about 1/2 an hour or more and this woman was shopping talking on one of those ear bug thingys going on and on about this women "Jennifer" (or something) just really really bad mouthing her and every aisle we were on we could hear her on the next aisle.. just trashing this woman.. so anyway we are on our way out when we hear her say something like "Yeah, she is one stupid fat b****," or something.. gets into line behind us to check out.. My friend (granted we are like early 20's at the time and this woman was mid 30s) goes "Excuse me. I just want you to know I really don't appreciate hearing about your opinions and foul langage, maybe you could finish this conversation in your car." The lady turns red starts getting "Why I never" at us and starts talking about us to her friend! So my friend goes "And by the way, I happen to really like Jennifer and don't think she deserves having a person like you in her life. I'll be sure to let her know!!"

Now, we live in a pretty small town.. and that woman's face turned white! :eek: I bet she won't talk about people in public again!!
