Well today the charge nurse an R.N was doing her job and adm. walked by and said "Don't forget the meeting today" The nurse replied "Oh I forgot my brain is off today haha." .................................She was fired for that comment.(I was there to hear and see this)
The Adm. is a very "gossipy" kind of guy at the end of the day I overheard him talking and said " jane do is fired, you know what she said to me? Her brain was off ....imagine a Nurse dealing with peoples lives and her brain is off."
From my point of view she was not being serious she was busy doing her job. I'm not getting involved but I just wanted to see what others think. Is this normal? Does this happen all the time? I'm scared for my job now.
That guy sounds like a drama queen. The type that is very aware and worried constantly that he doesn't have what it takes to ________________ (fill in the blank). So, he feels threatened all the time when no one is threatening him. Those people "act out" and it momentarily feels good to have eliminate the perceived threat. They hire another person and the whole circus act starts again.
I would advise her to file a complaint with the State Department of Public Health about the administrator of that facility. Please tell her this because no one deserves to be going to through a firing for no reason when it's already impossible to find a job. I believe the adminsitrator should lose his job. I have the same problem at my work where I got fired. The DNS was to racist against me and she just treated me like I wasnt part of the team. Now I am unemployed. She needs to stand up for her rights and take action. No one in a higher position can do this to an innocent RN Charge Nurse. She deserves her job back!
From my own experience, I will also share a story: I had a good friend (RN) who worked a hospital for a year and was highly competent, never absent, etc. "Problem" was that she is gay- the other nurses on her shift had a huge issue and made derogatory comments about homosexuals at the nurses station. She kept her head down and asked for a transfer to another department and was denied because some of these nasty high-school girls reported that she had a "bad" attitude for not being social and helpful to them. The NM was in on it and they just walked up to her one morning after clocking in and fired her for having a "bad attitude that wasn't corrected". She fought it and because nothing was recorded or written down and the whole dept stuck together there was nothing she could do.
I am sick that we are supposed to be in a PROFESSION but we are treated like minimum wage fast food employees- no respect, no job security, and can lose your whole career/reputation on a bunch of immature brats.

Health depts do not give a rats' tail about staff/employee issues- they're there for the benefit of the patients/residents.....
At best, there's a LOT that the OP doesn't know from behind the scenes...at worst, the guy is a jackwagon.... either way, who'd want to go back and work with someone like that?
The worst type of this kind of character does it because they have an "in" of some sort with somebody higher up the food chain which actually does give the jerks a level of immunity from the effects of running their mouth all the time.
I have read so many posts from nurses (usually working in smaller facilities) who were fired and not told the truth about the real reason by someone who functions as a spineless errand person. The worst part of it is that the nurses often blame themselves.
I had a so-called supervisor once who was hired by the medical director who normally breezed through our area every two months or so. I had to quit that one. She was truly malicious and roped in the unit secretary as her pet to gossip about everybody else on the unit. I think her days were numbered anyway because people were beginning to quit in droves or request a transfer.
Hmm...this is a strange story, but with some of the terminations I've witnessed personally, I can believe it. At my place of employment.....a gero-psych facility, I have seen a lot of people come and go for getting on management's bad side. The members of the management team are all related or have known each other their entire lives. However, it might get better since we got a new Executive Director a few mos. ago..
In an employee at will state, either can end the relationship at anytime. However, if the institution has a Code of Conduct, rules setting rules of progressive discipline, etc then that must be followed by the institution
Only if the employer wants to avoid paying an unemployment claim.
If UE decides the termination was with cause and that progressive discipline was followed and denies the claim, there is no penalty to the employer. If UE decides the firing was was without cause and/or that progressive discipline was not followed and approves the claim it counts toward the employer's insurance premiums. Enough 'dings' and their premium goes up.
Sometimes it's worth having your UE insurance premiums go up a couple dollars a month just to get rid of someone.

i'm thinking there was far more to this than what you saw. that charge nurse could have been under disciplinary probation for months and you shouldn't have known about it.

Just assuming my position under the bus and keeping my mouth shut...well, not completely shut...aw, I'm under the bus and gripping my head off about it....
