Along the lines of the first thread, "Things you would love to say to your nursing instructors" I thought this would be a great thread to start. I've since graduated LVN but there was one main thing I wanted to say to some students in my class.
Will you people in the back row please stop talking! I swear that today I can still hear their motormouths running! :chuckle
When I am in the RN bridge I will come back and post some more. I'm sure some of you have something to get off your chest. Come on and unload here! :)
Just b/c you are in a sorority, NSNA, cheerleading, curriculum club 'n get good grades and say that you don't have time to watch TV, eat, read the textbook, etc. does not mean that you have to yell it out in class and make us feel like we are inferior and waste our time doing these things. Didn't you say you read the WHOLE collection of TWIGHLIGHT last semester and watch OPRAH. Can you just not be so narrow minded...! thanks! Oh, yeah and another thing don't ask older nursing students, "why are you HERE." A university doesn't have an age limit, missy.

you mean someone actually said that! that makes me so angry, good lord!!:angryfire
Would you please SHUT UP about how you are sooooo upset because you *only* got a 90 on the test when you usually get a 95? Especially when there are students who are STRUGGLING to just pass the class. (doesnt apply to me personally, but there is a student who was one point away from passing and it made her feel really bad that folks were upset about getting such a high score, I can only imagined how that made her feel)Also, please stop talking during lecture about your wedding plans. (Good for you that he FINALLY proposed, but can you please talk about that on your own time?)
And while you are at it, no, not everything they teach us in class can be applied to a clinical situation verbatiam. So, please don't tell me that "they told us in class not to say such and such to a patient" when you were NOT involved in the patient's care, nor was in the situation where I had to tell a patient's family member her mother is dying. (Response I got from a couple of students during post conference while discussing death and dying issues based on my patient and the family dynamics)
Just because you can "pass a test" with flying colors don't mean you will be a good nurse. Just like a person who struggles with test taking skills don't mean they are gonna be a bad nurse. There is such a thing as book smart and plain ole common sense.
Yes I have to say that I am one of those student that is struggling right now and I just started! I can't seem to grasp these test taking skills down and yes i have A LOT of people complaining about their high 80s and low 90s. I'm over here trying to get in the high 70s and can't reach it because of my darn weaknesses in test taking skills. Do you have any suggestions that would help me pull through to not hang on a thread anymore?
You do NOT know more than the teacher. Pay attention, and you will see that she just said what you're trying to correct. I am here to learn what the teacher knows, not what you know. Yes, I understand you have already heard this before because this is your second time in the class. Guess what, that means you FAILED, which means you didn't know it then, so you need to pay attention and re-hear it!
I pay tuition to hear what's inside the teacher's head, not yours!
tnguye22 - does your school offer tutoring? I would suggest going to the tutoring center and have them help you. Also, you could set up a meeting with your instructor during office hours to herp you out. That is exactly what office hours are for, so you shouldn't feel shy about taking advantage of them.
You could also buy study guides for the textbooks you use. Mine are in NCLEX-style, which is quite helpful, since our exams are set up that way.
When you are choosing your answer choose the BEST answer, since two will usually be right. And keep in mind the higherarchy of needs, i.e. basic phsyiological needs will be met before safety and security, etc.
Good luck!

yes I am seeking test taking skills tip on Monday. I have the study guide but it's not nclex style questions.thanks for these tips. I appreciate it. Sometimes the teachers don't seem approachable. How do you suggest I approach this? Im in the shoe of having professors that are too smart for their own good. As for tutoring they are trying to get something together for us right now.
1. Thank you for trusting me with your secrets when you HAD to vent to someone.
2. Thank you for keeping my secrets when I HAD to vent to someone.
3. Thank you for helping when I asked.
4. Thank you for slapping me upside the head, even when I didn't ask.
5. Thank you for listening to me whine and cry.
6. Thank you for being such a great and generous group that when those people went up there because they graduated with honors, you seemed genuinely happy for them.
You were and are an awesome group of people. I wear with pride the title of being a nurse because you are one.
I would like to tell the girl in my clinical group that whispering and gossiping is for kids and that just because she is "with child" doesn't mean that she has the right to act like one. She is going to be the type of nurse that runs to the nurse manager and tattle on her cohorts..She should carry a knife in her lab coat b/c I can tell she'll stab you in the back in a second.. I do not like this girl and she has a "smart" mouth to boot..

i've overheard students say that the older students shouldn't be in the program because "they won't be in nursing for long anyway at their age!"....something a steely stare put a stop to! yeah, they've got time on their side, but us oldies but goodies have life experience which counts a lot when your competition is all about dating and partying.
In our second year right, girl no joke (have it recorded) asks, "When we are palpating a pulse, what are we actually feeling?"Are you serious......
OH WOW!! I really hope I never have her as a nurse in the future...or if I do, I hope some SERIOUS light bulbs have gone off before then!! YIKES!! :)

ewwwwww!!!! lmao!!
anyway, my vents...
1. the instructors are not trying to trick you into failing! yes the exam questions are "tricky" but it's designed to get your brain to start thinking a different way! would you rather have easier, "normal" exams and then fail the nclex because you've never seen questions like that in your life? geesh. critical thinking, peeps. :icon_roll
2. along the same lines.. yes, i suppose you could argue that the answer you chose was right.. sorta.. but then again if you'd read the directions on the test booklet you'd see it says pick the BEST answer...
3. hearing "i didn't sign up to be a teacher/psychotherapist/etc. i just wanna be able to work my floor and go home" makes me sad. nursing is more than the procedures, people!!
