Things you'd LOVE to be able to tell patients, and get away with it.

Just curious as to what you would say. Mine goes something like this: Nurses Relations Video Nurse Life

Updated:

Hi, my name is AngelfireRN, I'll be your nurse tonight.

I am not a waitress, nor am I your slave.

Yelling and hurling obscenities at me will not get you your pain meds any sooner than they are ordered. Nor will having your family member or entourage do the same.

Threatening lawsuits and having umpteen family members camp out in the halls or hold up the nurse's station will not get you preferential treatment.

Physically grabbing me as I go down the hall is NOT a good idea.

I do not give the orders, but I do have to follow/enforce them. This is something that you should take up with your doctor.

No, I will not call him again to ask him for more pain medicine. He has been called twice and has said no both times.

No, I will not give you his number so you can "straighten him out".

No, you are not my only patient, and I highly doubt that you are single-handedly paying my salary. On the off chance that you are, let's talk about a raise.

NO, NO, NO, I most empahatically will NOT come get you when it is time for your next pain shot while you are having a smoke break. I also will not bring it to you in the smoking room. (Have actually said that, I am allergic to cigarettes. I did it once, had an asthma attack, desatted to 83, and turned blue, according to the patient and my charge nurse, after the patient had to help me back to the floor).

No, I don't really care if your family has not eaten all day, they drove here by themselves, they are not sick, and no, I will not call for 6 guest trays. (This of course, is if the patient in question does not need all 6 family members present, and is not at death's door).

No, you may not have 3 six-packs of soda from the kitchen, there are other people that would like a snack, too.

No, they will not open up the kitchen up just for you, at 1 in the morning, because you don't like the snacks we have on the floor.

I could think of hundreds, but those will do for a start. I know it sounds mean, but this is why I got out of bedside nursing. When a hospital becomes the Hilton, I'm gone!

Have fun!

had a patient that complains EVERY meal that he cant eat that food and then before even looking under the lid starts demanding other foods....chicken soup, scrambled eggs...all sorts of stuff. the kitchen complained to me that they had to stop the tray line to make all his ridiculous demanded food. i told them to stop stoping tray line! so sunday, he was in the dining room raising cane and demanding other foods. i finally really did say this to him...

"they sent you what YOU ordered on your menu that YOU marked yourself. what makes you think that it is OK for all the other patients to have to wait for their FIRST tray so you can get your second???"

boy did that feel good!

My mom's been hospitalized a number of times, and the only time she ever heard anyone REALLY complain about the food was when she was in to have her tubes tied (back in the days when this was 3 days in the hospital) and her roommate was a 300-pound diabetic who was there because she wouldn't take care of herself. Well, OF COURSE she didn't like what they were giving her to eat!

A few weeks ago I was really sick, on my second really bad cold in less than 3 weeks and on top of it pregnant, so not feeling so hot. I had been unable to get out of bed for about 4 days straight and it was my first night back at work. I felt like crap, but since our hospital won't give you sick time until you've been there 6 months, even though you're forced to be exposed to contagious diseases because the isolation rooms are full.

Anyway, I went into a patients room and as I was untangeling the monitor wires to hook her back up after she returned from I test I had one of those sneezes that you don't feel coming until it's too late. I did manage to get it into my scrub sleeve instead of sneezing into the woman's face. Before I had even finished sneezing her daughter, who was a total snot, was like "God, aren't you going to wash your hands.'

Yes lady I am. Do you think you could try to be even some what friendly?? I could have called in sick with out pay again tonight and there would be no nurse to take care of the patients in this section, so your butts would still be in the waiting room 6 hours from now because they would be even more short staffed than we already are. Grrrr!! Don't mess with a sick pregnant lady! :hlk:

No Mam, I am sorry the MD won't write you a back to work statement because you decided to stay in Atllanta 3 EXTRA MONTHS ! You were seen here today, that's all we cover !

Did say this !

I know you love your dog very much but WTH is he doing HERE and under the covers in bed with you?? Uh... dogs aren't on the hospital's approved visiting list... just wondering though... how the heck did you get him up here without being stopped? He must weigh 90#...:yelclap:

sharpeimom:paw::paw:

You must work at my old hospital!!! Visitors brought in patients' dogs ALL OF THE TIME!!!! Nobody ever said anything to them. Now, I'm a dog lover and just dealt with it, I figured if management didn't care I didn't care! People have respiratory issues and some are allergic to dogs!

You're 8 weeks pregnant and puked once today?? Ever heard of morning sickness?

I actually said this to a patient after she asked me for phenergan and chips at the same time.

Me: Um, I thought you said you were nautious??

Pt: I am!

Me: Do you think it's smart to be eating chips if you feel like you're going to puke?

Pt: Yes! Don't you still eat when you feel like you're going to puke??

Me: Nope. I just shook my head and walked out. I knew I couldn't win that one.

This reminds me of the other day when some lady had her dog inside CVS. lol dang

I was at CVS once when 2 customers' dogs got into a huge fight at the front of the store.

When I worked at a coffee shop, we had to constantly chase out dog owners. it's a restaurant! It it's not an assistance dog, it has to stay outside!

I will never undertand non-disabled people who refer to their dogs as their "children" and take them everywhere. I love my cat, but I would never dream of taking her to a restaurant.

Had a Pt the other day there was a list of what I wanted to say:

1/ I have seen women give birth to 14lb babies without that much screaming and carry on.

2/ Why do you scream and carry on only when your wife is there or when you see the staff in front of your cubicle? (wife was massaging, soothing and generally slaving herself to this goose- all the time with tears in her eyes)

3/ Should I tell your wife that you have refused 3 different pain meds because "They wont touch the sides"?

4/ The Dr's don't see you as a priority because you are not!

The diagnosis.........gout

YES!! Gout is very painful...that is why his doc ordered the pain meds. Wouldn't you love to tell this particular pt. to

* Go home if you are going to refuse prescribed pain meds.

* Your wife is trying to help you; grow up and take your meds.

* If you enjoy feeling the pain you do, we can call for a psych consult...maybe get a commitment?

* Here's a list of food you should not eat to avoid gout in the future. Now that you know the intense pain, I am sure

you will be compliant.

Reminds me of the diarrhea patient we had who refused to take Questran or Immodium because "it won't work anyway".

I guess i should have said, "Let me get this straight. You're refusing medication, refusing to eat or drink anything, and you want to stay here so we can be called every ten minutes to clean up and document your bowel movements?"

I'm sorry you got bumped for an emergent case, but the fact that you are not the emergency is a good thing, no?

And "Well, that's the downside of being admitted to a major hospital - you get great service from very experienced staff but sometimes get bumped for trauma patients."
