Things you'd LOVE to be able to tell patients, and get away with it.

Just curious as to what you would say. Mine goes something like this: Nurses Relations Video Nurse Life

Updated:

Hi, my name is AngelfireRN, I'll be your nurse tonight.

I am not a waitress, nor am I your slave.

Yelling and hurling obscenities at me will not get you your pain meds any sooner than they are ordered. Nor will having your family member or entourage do the same.

Threatening lawsuits and having umpteen family members camp out in the halls or hold up the nurse's station will not get you preferential treatment.

Physically grabbing me as I go down the hall is NOT a good idea.

I do not give the orders, but I do have to follow/enforce them. This is something that you should take up with your doctor.

No, I will not call him again to ask him for more pain medicine. He has been called twice and has said no both times.

No, I will not give you his number so you can "straighten him out".

No, you are not my only patient, and I highly doubt that you are single-handedly paying my salary. On the off chance that you are, let's talk about a raise.

NO, NO, NO, I most empahatically will NOT come get you when it is time for your next pain shot while you are having a smoke break. I also will not bring it to you in the smoking room. (Have actually said that, I am allergic to cigarettes. I did it once, had an asthma attack, desatted to 83, and turned blue, according to the patient and my charge nurse, after the patient had to help me back to the floor).

No, I don't really care if your family has not eaten all day, they drove here by themselves, they are not sick, and no, I will not call for 6 guest trays. (This of course, is if the patient in question does not need all 6 family members present, and is not at death's door).

No, you may not have 3 six-packs of soda from the kitchen, there are other people that would like a snack, too.

No, they will not open up the kitchen up just for you, at 1 in the morning, because you don't like the snacks we have on the floor.

I could think of hundreds, but those will do for a start. I know it sounds mean, but this is why I got out of bedside nursing. When a hospital becomes the Hilton, I'm gone!

Have fun!

That "call light" you are holding is actually the trigger to 5 pounds of C-4 plastic explosive under your bed. In other words, don't press the red button.

Actually, I dare you...I DOUBLE DOG dare ya! I could be joking, probably not, but maybe...you never know, but I do.

"No, your daughter is not 'in nursing school'. She is taking English 101 at the local community college. That is NOT 'in nursing school'."

Corollary: Freshman general studies major is NOT 'pre-med' either.

How about:

"If you can't afford to take care of the children you already have, for God's sakes, PLEASE either go to the local Planned Parenthood clinic for some free birth control, or learn to keep those darned legs closed! I am TIRED of having my tax dollars go to supporting you and your kids because you 'can't' work! And when your kids grow up thinking its normal to sign that welfare application the day of your 18th birthday and never attempt to work a day in their ****ed lives, it is NOT ok!!!"

OOOh, and:

"When you go get plastic surgery in a third world country, please do not be surprised at the sub-par care you receive. Please do not be shocked when you come back home with severe infections. Please do not be amazed when your breasts look like they are rotting and start to fall off. And then please do not be startled when some of your healthcare workers comment on the perils of getting said procedures in those lovely third world countries."

I have also told a patient who was driving us nuts with her complaints:

"Do you want to know why you are constipated? Its probably because you are on more narcotics than most hospice patients I know. Yes, I know your stomach hurts. It hurts because you are constipated. You know what would help? Stop abusing narcotics.

Do you want to know why you are always out of breath and need people to wheel you back to the unit after every ****ed time you go to the smoking area? Well first, it might be the fact that you smoke 3 packs a day and have been diagnosed with COPD for years now, and still haven't quit smoking. Second, it might be that you keep missing your respiratory treatments because you are out smoking. Third, it might be because every time you decide to go out smoking, you take off your 4L/min O2 that you desperately need to keep your O2 sat levels at an acceptable level. So unless you want to start being more proactive in your own health choices and try to get better, please stop complaining to us about every little thing we are supposedly doing wrong when all it is doing is taking us away from the bedside of people who actually WANT to be better and go home. Please stop insisting that we drop everything when you do come back from smoking to now call back the Resp Tech who just left the unit to continue her rounds, because you werent present for your scheduled treatment."

I realize I am going to have to tone down the tough love now that I am in the US. Man, Im going to miss it lol. I was the brutal honesty queen at my old job. Other nurses would usually come to me when they had PITA patients no one else could handle...

Don't tone it down! Come work with me, we'd get along famously, I think!

I believe a big portion of the U.S. population needs your kind of "tough love". :D

Unfortunately, I don't think your butt-kissing HR departments would be real happy with it!

Sadly, you're right. They placate idiocy.
