Things you'd LOVE to be able to tell patients, and get away with it.

Just curious as to what you would say. Mine goes something like this: Nurses Relations Video Nurse Life

Updated:

Hi, my name is AngelfireRN, I'll be your nurse tonight.

I am not a waitress, nor am I your slave.

Yelling and hurling obscenities at me will not get you your pain meds any sooner than they are ordered. Nor will having your family member or entourage do the same.

Threatening lawsuits and having umpteen family members camp out in the halls or hold up the nurse's station will not get you preferential treatment.

Physically grabbing me as I go down the hall is NOT a good idea.

I do not give the orders, but I do have to follow/enforce them. This is something that you should take up with your doctor.

No, I will not call him again to ask him for more pain medicine. He has been called twice and has said no both times.

No, I will not give you his number so you can "straighten him out".

No, you are not my only patient, and I highly doubt that you are single-handedly paying my salary. On the off chance that you are, let's talk about a raise.

NO, NO, NO, I most empahatically will NOT come get you when it is time for your next pain shot while you are having a smoke break. I also will not bring it to you in the smoking room. (Have actually said that, I am allergic to cigarettes. I did it once, had an asthma attack, desatted to 83, and turned blue, according to the patient and my charge nurse, after the patient had to help me back to the floor).

No, I don't really care if your family has not eaten all day, they drove here by themselves, they are not sick, and no, I will not call for 6 guest trays. (This of course, is if the patient in question does not need all 6 family members present, and is not at death's door).

No, you may not have 3 six-packs of soda from the kitchen, there are other people that would like a snack, too.

No, they will not open up the kitchen up just for you, at 1 in the morning, because you don't like the snacks we have on the floor.

I could think of hundreds, but those will do for a start. I know it sounds mean, but this is why I got out of bedside nursing. When a hospital becomes the Hilton, I'm gone!

Have fun!

I wonder if we could have a day where nurses go sit in those cushy HR offices, and those guys come do our jobs. I think it would definitely help them see our side of the story a bit more.

Although I guess getting people to be more proactive in their health choices is not really in their best interests, as then they would be more healthy, and go to the hospital less.

Anyhoo, AngelFire, sorry for digressing, love this thread!

"Yes, honey, this is what I deal with EVERY DAY."

To my DH, who came to pick up our son at lunch yesterday, and got to witness a dismissal and a refusal, for medication abuse and for demanding 'the med I want or I won't pay'.

This whole time, he thought I was exaggerating. No, we didn't do them in full view of him, he got to see the patients stomp out bellowing about the injustice of it all afterward.

"No, Sir. Medication X does not stay in your system for 90 days. No, the fact that 'your bladder doesn't empty' will not affect the fact that you've been positive for Med. X 4 times. No, you can't 'come back after a while'. You're dismissed. Period. End of story."

To the patient who insisted that he knew it stayed in your system that long. He read it on the Internet.

Unfortunately, I don't think your butt-kissing HR departments would be real happy with it!

That's why I love my clinic. We don't have an HR department!

If you wake up all my sundowners who FINALLY fell asleep with your frantic yelling for stupidities, I WILL sedate you and restrain you. And I might just use a bigger needle than I need to. Just maybe. Keep it up though, your chances are looking good. Maybe throw in a few punches. Then we get to call a code white, and who knows, maybe some of the security guards will be cute and beefy.

No, they CAN'T 'sew it up a little tighter' when they fix your wife's episiotomy. We CAN use that extra thread to sew your pig mouth closed though, I'm sure your fresh PP wife would appreciate it right now!

No, your newborn did NOT test positive for cannabis in his urine because of second hand smoke a week ago. Yes, it is your fault he is in newborn intermediate care on a morphine protocol. You should have your tubes tied...

God, I swear, the fact that some people are still allowed to procreate...

I warned my DH when I went in to have our son that if he make some asinine remark like that, I'd come out of the stirrups and strangle him. As it was, I had to continually calm him (and my parents) down...toxemia, HELLP syndrome, 14 hours of unmedicated labor, and emergency section, and DIC will tend to make people a teense edgy.

Didn't do a whole lot for my feelings, either.

Ouch, I am sending you a big online hug for dealing with all that and still being the strong one!

I wanted to wig out, believe me, I KNEW how bad it was. But I also knew if I lost it, they'd all have had a communal come-apart, and there I'd have been. Fighting to stay calm (and when you're in the throes of a platelet reaction with a 150+ HR and asking for epi by name, that ain't easy) gave me something to concentrate on. I think that's part of what saved me. I didn't give in, even though I was terrified.

Well you could look at it two ways. The bright ones know how much money and time is involved in caring for and raising kids, so we don't have more than we can handle. The dumb ones don't think of that.

OR

Maybe they are the bright ones. They get to pop out baby after baby, and stay home, do nothing (because lord knows they wont *gasp* take CARE of those kids) collect a nice government check. They get medicare for them and all their brood. Food stamps. WIC. Housing. You name it. Meanwhile, us 'bright' people are getting up or going to bed at the crack of dawn to care for these ungrateful poops AND pay all those things for them. Makes you wonder, who is ignorant in all this?
