Things you'd LOVE to be able to tell patients, and get away with it.

Just curious as to what you would say. Mine goes something like this: Nurses Relations Video Nurse Life

Updated:

Hi, my name is AngelfireRN, I'll be your nurse tonight.

I am not a waitress, nor am I your slave.

Yelling and hurling obscenities at me will not get you your pain meds any sooner than they are ordered. Nor will having your family member or entourage do the same.

Threatening lawsuits and having umpteen family members camp out in the halls or hold up the nurse's station will not get you preferential treatment.

Physically grabbing me as I go down the hall is NOT a good idea.

I do not give the orders, but I do have to follow/enforce them. This is something that you should take up with your doctor.

No, I will not call him again to ask him for more pain medicine. He has been called twice and has said no both times.

No, I will not give you his number so you can "straighten him out".

No, you are not my only patient, and I highly doubt that you are single-handedly paying my salary. On the off chance that you are, let's talk about a raise.

NO, NO, NO, I most empahatically will NOT come get you when it is time for your next pain shot while you are having a smoke break. I also will not bring it to you in the smoking room. (Have actually said that, I am allergic to cigarettes. I did it once, had an asthma attack, desatted to 83, and turned blue, according to the patient and my charge nurse, after the patient had to help me back to the floor).

No, I don't really care if your family has not eaten all day, they drove here by themselves, they are not sick, and no, I will not call for 6 guest trays. (This of course, is if the patient in question does not need all 6 family members present, and is not at death's door).

No, you may not have 3 six-packs of soda from the kitchen, there are other people that would like a snack, too.

No, they will not open up the kitchen up just for you, at 1 in the morning, because you don't like the snacks we have on the floor.

I could think of hundreds, but those will do for a start. I know it sounds mean, but this is why I got out of bedside nursing. When a hospital becomes the Hilton, I'm gone!

Have fun!

Specializes in ER.

If you walk in with a take out coffee in everyone's hand I KNOW you aren't sick.

If you text or take a call during triage, and then tell me your pain is 10/10, I'm going to document that fact, just so the charge nurse has something to make her smile.

When I ask your loved one questions I am assessing for more than just the answer. Like mental status, problem solving, knowledge of their own health status, sometimes I don't even know if they can talk or not. So SHUT UP!!! Don't answer for them. I need to know how they feel, not how you remember them feeling yesterday.

After a pump-alarming night: "The drip is going in to your elbow. That nasty noisy you hear is because the fluid can't run when you bend your elbow, not because 'they can't get this new technology right'. You need to keep your arm straight for now. STOP BENDING YOUR **** ARM!!!"

Specializes in acute care.

"Today, I made the decision to quit. Then you told me I was the best nurse you have ever had. Thank you so much for making my day."

To family members and friends of patients:

"I'm asking the PATIENT these questions, not you. Would you kindly shut up and let them answer? Thanks"

To the patient that called me a pain in the rear:

"I don't think I ever laughed so hard in my life. Thanks!"

I'm almost a grad student nurse and with all the clinicals I do, I have a few qualms too:

- No, I am not your ACTUAL nurse (obviously the word "student"on the badge is not a tell-tale sign) & I have absolutely NO connections or ways to contact your doctor other than directing your supposed dire concerns to the head nurse.

- I'm so very sorry if it's not to your liking that the best I am able to do is tell your nurse that you need pain medication

- I am not in training to run a marathon & however not-busy you may think I am, my other assigned patient is going into respiratory distress and his sitter has no clue what's going on while his actual nurse is nowhere to be found.

- I'd love to stay and chat about your cats but I'm under a time crunch with getting my assessments finished & delivered to my b**** of an instructor; it's either you or a limb of mine ( I'm very fond of all of them).

- Not wanting to strike up a conversation with me is perfectly alright, but when I ask you an important question, please how the courtesy to respond.

- I'm sorry if my assessment of you is cutting into your phone call about how badly you've been treated at a hospital that is forced to take care of you when your a** got Bakered as threat to yourself & society; trust me, we're not that pleased to meet you either.

- Asking for my phone number and hitting on me is both unecessary and quite disturbing when I tell you plenty of times that I am ONLY 17! You probably have daughters or granddaughters that age, you pervert. Does the term "JAILBAIT" not resound inside your hollow skull?

^ & under that: NO for the LAST time I have no children of my own. -_-

Lol those are just few that I can think of right now :)

"Hello, random stranger I've never seen before during this patient's month-long admission. No, no member of nuring staff will sign they've witnessed you getting the patient to sign that document. No, even (or perhaps especially) because it's 'not a legal document' but some handwritten thing on notepaper. I don't care at all that a relative is coming from overseas and you need money to clean the patient's apartment and buy things for the arriving relative (including linen? Really?) - the patient's been here a month, the family member arrives in two weeks, and it's 9:30 at night! Even if one of us decided to break policy for you, they wouldn't do it when the patient, who's had an extensive stroke, is aphasic and had a dense hemi, might be in any way cognitively impaired. No, I can't tell you anything about the patient's clinical condition. Mmm, including whether or not there's impairment of faculties. No, nobody will sign this for you. Even though it's 'only' authorisation to take $200 out of the patient's account. I'm sure social work and the legal department will be delighted to help you during business hours. Now stop interrupting handover and- no, I am the nurse in charge. Go away now."

Venting - I feel better now!

So, you're being put up in a private room in a brand new multi million dollar rehab facility for weeks at a time so you can go home after your damn hip surgery able to walk and be independent, yet you treat the entire staff like DIRT and complain about every meal, every treatment, every single little routine all day long for WEEKS on end. NOTHING will EVER, EVER please you!!!!!

Unbelievable how ungrateful most of the American public is these days!

Specializes in Med/Surg, DSU, Ortho, Onc, Psych.

Please, please, PLEASE wash ur stinky feet, & take ur stinky shoes outside as the other patients are complaining about them. And to all the older people: yes u DO have to wash everyday otherwise u start to reek really bad, and as I can't stand disgusting smells more than anything, I will tell you you have to have a shower whether u want to or not. Also to those with false teeth: u still have to clean ur teeth at least twice a day (not just soak them in denture fluid), and actually rinse ur mouth with Listerine, otherwise ur uncontrolled halitosis is going to make me vomit.

Hey SoundofMusic, I work in orthopaedics where our patients get rehab & they are the same down under! Usually very overweight people who wonder why on earth their joints hurt and/or need replacing. Do any Drs actually tell them that if COULD be to do with the extra weight they are carrying? One woman said to me: when I was slim my joints never used to hurt. And they absolutely HATE doing rehab & moving around - it's just too much effort. And they expect every little thing to be done for them (I don't stand for it now). But instead of taking a little walk or swim (whatever) 2-3 times a week, they're willing to pay thousands of dollars to have most of their joints replaced. Then they complain about the cost, and the fact that they don't have a private nurse, etc, etc. My head hurts thinking about it sometimes...

-Why do you have to be so mean all the time? Even if we catered to your every whim, you'd still call me a ***** and hit me in the stomach. You are just as sick as everyone else here and you don't deserve special treatment

Bedside nursing is a "minefield", filled with lottery winner wannabes.

Am I paranoid? No. Just an experienced realist.
