Things you'd LOVE to be able to tell patients, and get away with it.

Just curious as to what you would say. Mine goes something like this: Nurses Relations Video Nurse Life

Updated:

Hi, my name is AngelfireRN, I'll be your nurse tonight.

I am not a waitress, nor am I your slave.

Yelling and hurling obscenities at me will not get you your pain meds any sooner than they are ordered. Nor will having your family member or entourage do the same.

Threatening lawsuits and having umpteen family members camp out in the halls or hold up the nurse's station will not get you preferential treatment.

Physically grabbing me as I go down the hall is NOT a good idea.

I do not give the orders, but I do have to follow/enforce them. This is something that you should take up with your doctor.

No, I will not call him again to ask him for more pain medicine. He has been called twice and has said no both times.

No, I will not give you his number so you can "straighten him out".

No, you are not my only patient, and I highly doubt that you are single-handedly paying my salary. On the off chance that you are, let's talk about a raise.

NO, NO, NO, I most empahatically will NOT come get you when it is time for your next pain shot while you are having a smoke break. I also will not bring it to you in the smoking room. (Have actually said that, I am allergic to cigarettes. I did it once, had an asthma attack, desatted to 83, and turned blue, according to the patient and my charge nurse, after the patient had to help me back to the floor).

No, I don't really care if your family has not eaten all day, they drove here by themselves, they are not sick, and no, I will not call for 6 guest trays. (This of course, is if the patient in question does not need all 6 family members present, and is not at death's door).

No, you may not have 3 six-packs of soda from the kitchen, there are other people that would like a snack, too.

No, they will not open up the kitchen up just for you, at 1 in the morning, because you don't like the snacks we have on the floor.

I could think of hundreds, but those will do for a start. I know it sounds mean, but this is why I got out of bedside nursing. When a hospital becomes the Hilton, I'm gone!

Have fun!

I'm sorry, but when you've hit half a dozen people, you're going to be restrained. Period. I don't care if you say you can't help it, you hit people when you're upset. I'm upset, the other nurses are upset and the respiratory therapist who's lip you split are all upset. However, we didn't close the door and beat you within an inch of your drunk, drug riddled life. As much as we would have all liked to.

"I cannot believe you are whining over something as trivial as this...you should be ashamed of yourself. I have a cancer patient next door in pain from head to toe who complains less than you"

"Im sorry your food wasnt perfect- Im sorry your pillow is flat - Im sorry you dont get the channel on the TV you want... this is not the ****ing Hilton!!"

Said the Dementia resident to the Charge Nurse, "If ya'll don't give me a bath NOW, I'm calling the police!" Said the Charge Nurse to the Dispatcher from the Sheriff's office a few minutes later,"Yes, we have a Miss Doomadiddy here...do you want her?"

"You have two choices: use a bedpan in the bed or let us help you transfer to a commode and we'll wheel you to the toilet. Walking on your newly amputated forefoot is not an option. That's it - pick one.

"I'm happy to call security, but they won't evict me from the premises. In the meantime - pan or commode?

"Feel free to call X&Y law firm but I should warn you they'll have a conflict of interest as they already represent me. In the meantime - pan or commode?"

"Ooh, nice try at dividing the staff but we're too experienced to fall for that. So, pan or commode?"

"I'm not going to argue with you about the content of the Hippocratic oath. Nor about whether I answer to a higher authority than the hospital's policies. Pan or commode?

"As you're not my patient I didn't know you have schitzophrenia. To the best of my knowledge that doesn't preclude you using a pan or a commode."

"Okay, I'm going. When you've decided if you want the pan or the commode let me know."

I do not have time to sit here and talk to you for an unlimited amount of time everyday, about every one of your 400 medications and your health problems, I am your husbands nurse, not yours. For more information call your pharmacist and/or doctor.

Gee whiz, TYVM. :icon_roll

j/k - but I don't enjoy dealing with these types either, especially if they're drunk.

I know what you mean...but it IS a great time to tell the pt's wife to call the pharm & Doc.

Let me clarify. And I did have a bad day with this woman. It was ridiculous -- and the worst was not being able to adequately take care of my other pts because this woman was so demanding every 5 minutes with her "pain relief." She'd turn on the tears at the flick of a switch. It was ridiculous.

If these folks were at least the slightest bit humble and GRATEFUL for their care, perhaps I could stand it. But here they are demanding, screaming, mad at you, the nurse, for every little last thing that goes wrong, for every 5minutes they have to WAIT for something so routine. They complain non-stop about everything -- I say let them go HOME.

I don't feel they should be allowed to demand their care. They are lucky to be receiving it -- lucky that anyone puts up with their nonsense, and pays for it to boot.

Is that tough to hear? Well, I'm sorry -- but it needs to be said. Our society just coddles these people, demands nothing from them. It's bringing us down as a nation and I think it needs to stop.

I couldn't agree with you more! I work on a psych ward and I swear I had the same pt. Except that she was sooooo fat and lazy, she wouldn't even get up in the night to pee. She would just go in her bed and then start screaming for new "gowns" (1 didn't cover her) and her bed changed. If I could have $%%^%^&^ her and gotten away with it, I would have! lol

Oh geez, you are right. I didn't work at a hospital but I can remember family members bringing their family into the nursing home with lists of things to be done that were ridiculous. "A footrub every 2 hours." I guess it is all part of nursing because we are dealing with human beings. I can remember (I am aging myself) nursing in the 1980's just before DRG's and Aids when we actually had the time to spend with our patients. Oh how I wish those days were back. We actually used Kardex's for their problems. Were they all easy to take care of?" No. I can remember a 90 something year old woman who was brought up from admissions and coded within 2 minutes of reaching the room. I was 19 years old and the family was screaming at me that it was all my fault. It wasn't. But I had no idea how to respond to that in the midst of attempting CPR. Luckily my teammates who had more experience rallied around me. The veiled threats are the ones that get to me the most, "I know so and so." I am thinking to myself. "It doesn't matter to me who you are or who you know. I will still care for you to the best of my ability but not at the expensive of my other patients."
