I have worked with a few old school nurses who weren't their anymore and they were making BIG nursing mistakes, but they still have the licenses. Now as hard as it to get one do you feel that they should be forced into retirement and stripped of their licenses?

I retired from a nsg home 3 yrs ago. When I did, I got calls every day to come back to work. Finally after talking it over with my retirement plan and discussing it with the better half, I agreed to go back just every other weekend, But, I can't go over a certain amount of income. It is nice, still keep my hand in nursing, still see old co-workers and make some pocket money. But, some weekends are worse than others and sometimes, just want to just say enough and stay home. My better half doesn't like me working. I do enjoy my time off. Will not give up my retirement.

Many doctors and nurses that are retired are being called back. Forced to retire? Interesting how circumstances change.

I can't help chuckling reading some of these responses.  Oh sure, in my early years of nursing I inwardly questioned a few nurses myself.  But they were a goldmine of experience for which I was grateful!  And they weren't afraid of the doctors either.  If a nurse is really unsafe, then the Board of Nursing is the entity to deal with.  But you'd better be able to back it up, Kid.

If you are convinced that a nurse is dangerous to patients, and you do nothing, you yourself are also culpable.

Funny that states are now calling doctors and nurses who have retired to come and help care for Covid-19 patients. 

Age has nothing to do with this. 

Remember that if one lives long enough, one will become an older nurse. Be mindful of that when questioning whether mandatory retirements should be put into play.

Are you actually a nurse? Well, I certainly hope some of those "old school" nurses can find the time to help you with your grammar. It's a good thing (for some folks *ahem*) that grammar isn't included on the NCLEX exam.

Trouble with 'forcing' someone to retire is....that is actually called firing them. And have ya heard about the staffing shortages everywhere? There are many, many nurses bailing out and leaving their careers, young and old. Newbies and Crusty Old Bats have a tradition of this long-running adversarial relationship.

Same-old-same-old. Ho-Hum!

Please don't call me a crusty old bat. I have been an RN for 46 years and an NP for 27.  The last 8 years I have done Locum Tenens. I am 70.  There is no difference in my performance and those younger than I, and I adapt to new situations easily.  Ageism is the last "OK" discrimination. Please stop judging people who you don't know. I get offers of jobs 2-3 times a day and only turn them down if they are less than $70/hour.  Currently I make $90/hr. and work with Covid patients, and yes, I understand Epic. That is discrimination and it is not OK.

I understand why you would be offended by that terminology, and possibly it won't make a difference anyway... but the original post was from 2011 and "crusty old bat" was a grateful post from a seasoned nurse appreciating her older co-workers for their resilient demeanor, ability to tolerate the most "gross" scenarios without a qualm, and acceptance of the occasional honest but unflattering remark about a patient when stressed near the breaking point.

Maybe some members use the term to demean us, but that was due to a lack of context.

I seriously doubt that the poster was using the term in a derogatory way  considering she/he has 43 years of experience which is just a few years less than you list, leading me to believe this person is no newbie. I would understand and at 65 myself, take considerable umbrage to that term in a different context. I suspect you my have dealt with ageism in your career and if so, I am sorry to hear that.  You are obviously accomplished as you took great pains to explain so just rest easy in the knowledge that you and those you work for and with know your value.

First, "Crusty Old Bat" is not and was not meant as, a bad thing. You should embrace the title and glory in it.

Second, and I'm sorry to say this but... If you can say, "I am 70.  There is no difference in my performance and those younger than I, and I adapt to new situations easily" then perhaps you should look at Dunning-Kruger because physically and mentally you are not the same as you were and you are not the same as younger people. I am 66 and know whereof I speak.

Third, enjoy the work while you can if that makes you happy. I enjoy retirement.

So from a crusty old bat, go for it, revel in the name and don't be too easily offended.
