I had a "pleasure" of working with the " knows it all" new grad,lord what an awful experience was that!!! I mean I'm usually very tolerant toward new grads being one myself and most are awsome but this one guys let me tell you she was acting like she has been a nurse for 30 years (and she never even worked in a hospital yet,hah!) Her attitude was so condescending and her tone of voice sounded as she is the most experienced nurse on this planet and she even tried to talk down to me (even though we both are fairly new grads) I can stand an experienced nurse trying to teach me this and that even I can stand a bad attitude coming from her (I do have respect for years of her knowledge) but I will not stand a new grad trying to SCHOOL me.:devil::devil::devil: I guess this particular nurse will fit right in among nasty nurses.Gosh,I hope i dont have to work with her again.

:D Newly-qualified nurses can be a bit like that sometimes. One of my wards new nurses tried to hand me a lecture about checking the pulse before giving digoxin the other day.

Digoxin can slow the heartbeat dangerously? Wowza, never knew that ;)

I put it down to enthusiasm and that new-grad feeling of "I'm gonna change the world" We've all been there.

the cockiness may be a defensive front. she might wear that mask because she thinks making others look bad will promote herself.

while i wish her and yourself well, i would also like to share with you that usually i would often catch new grads like the one you described crying in the break room.

I think its a coping mechanism. Not done out of cockiness but out of desire to fit in and show that they are not dummies and are an asset. It just depends on the point of view.

Unlike the rest of you, I have ZERO tolerance for new grad attitude. Either bow down to my brilliance or get outta ma face.

i agree with rnbydesign. do not get me wrong, op, i cannot stand the same from new grads either and i will smack them down quickly if they become a problem for me! however, as one who is recently no longer a new grad (i am going on year two now), i can say that unfortunately this chick will be seen as someone with confidence and will be given more opportunities sooner then the new grads who do not share her attitude! i have seen it happen in both the med surg units (i have worked three-as a float nurse) and the er (i have worked two-one as a float nurse). the new grads that were humble were treated like dummies for a long time! in nursing humility will get you nowhere! fake-it-until-you-make-it plus having an attitude that you control the space around you and that of your counterparts, will get you far unless you do something stupid and screw up (i have seen this too)!
