The worst or strangest orders you have seen...

Published

This may have been done before but I would like to hear about some off the wall orders you've seen MD's write...

Here are a couple from me...

Give 2mg Coumadin qd and prn :uhoh21:

Zantac 150mg q6hours and prn

I have more too but need to think:lol2:

Specializes in MICU/SICU.

Neosporin drip, titrate to maintain MAP 70-85. Old CT surgeon. We jacked him for weeks.

This one is an "oh-yuck" for me.

Had a pt once that absolutely LOVED a pretty nurse to come in and insert the ol' foley - He said he just felt he could pee better through a rubber tube....

Referred for psych consult - me, not the pt.

Had a guy like that once - he hassled me and hassled me for a foley - fooled him - had one of the guys come and put it in.:lol2:He was NOT a happy camper!

The male nurse didn't mind - this guy was a frequent traveler at our hospital - and everyone knew what he was like.:trout:

pt hospitalized with severely low bp (70/30)

"atenelol for migraine daily"

ok i understand atenelol is commontly used for migraines...but with a bp of 70/30?!?!

Specializes in Oncology.

I had an order last night to give Regular Insulin IV push. This doctor must have been either really tired, or really needing to not be a doctor. We were pretty much telling him what to order, and it took him 7 tries to come up with an appropriate order.

Specializes in CVICU, CCU, MICU, SICU, Transplant.

A new MD wrote "get arterial blood gas from PICC line." LOL

We kindly told her that a PICC line is in a vein, and that we would have to stick the pt's wrist (in her artery) to get an ARTERIAL blood gas.

Us: "Did you mean a VENOUS blood gas?" MD: "No, i mean arterial." Us: "But like we just said, a PICC line is in a vein, you know, for infusing fluids and medicine; we cant get an arterial blood gas from it. Its impossible." MD: "Well.......... did you at least try??"

Some ppl just dont listen.

You actually are able to give Regular insulin IV. It's the only insulin you can do that with.

We do IV drips of it all the time, but it's against policy to push it. Apparently that's not the case everywhere, but I kind of thought it was before reading this.

Xanax aerosol q 6 hours. Advised MD that all the nurses would be happy, but perhaps Xopenex would work better for the patient's lung function.

:yeah:love this one...xanax probably wouldn't do much for the lungs:yeah:

They should make xanax aerosols and give them to everyone coming into the hospital. That way they're nice and relaxed when they come to the floor. :chuckle
