The Truth About Nursing

Published

I honestly believe that most people don't know what their getting themselves into when they try to pursue a career in nursing. Like seriously!

Today, I asked my closest friend why she wants to be a nurse (she's pre-nursing with me) and she said, "Because of the money, the hot male nurses, and because I like babies".

Lol, she also wants to get her CNA license next spring because she witnessed the birth of her neice and an actual CNA woman who helped "deliver the baby" told her she could be that in just 3 to 5 weeks. I really just wished that woman would've told her that she'll first probably end up working in a nursing home until then some. So now my friend is saving up to become one.

I'm not going to tell her the truth about nursing though, only because she's a grown woman and is capable of making her own decisions and learning about nursing on her own like I had to.

Although, I am secretly steering her to get her ADN first before she goes in debt trying to get her BSN, blindly.

You don't know the truth about nursing...you're not even in nursing school yet! What you know about nursing could probably fit on the head of a pin.

Oh, girl..... I feel your pain. I vividly remember as a child hearing my quasi step-brother eat bananas (mouth open omg) and struggling desperately with the overwhelming impulses it would give me. I couldn't have been more than 9? And it continues. I can't sit in a room with people eating is there isn't some other noise to drown it out.

If I offended someone with my earlier or original post that was not my intentions. My main point was that she said her comment as if she was doing it only for the money, and I honestly don't think the pay is worth it for someone who Is only doing it for the money. That's what I meant, and she has a strange phobia of feet, so I don't know how it'll work out for her seeing feet a lot. She's my roommate so I should know.

And that's why "money" is in bold print. Because I do agree the pay is good money if you love what you do.

"For the money" is as valid a reason for going into nursing as any other. It may not be wads and wads of money, but it's a steady paycheck with good benefits for indoor work. And it's much better money than being a CNA, a Walmart cashier or, arguably, a grocery store cashier. Perhaps YOU don't think the pay is worth it for YOU, but your friend may have a different opinion.

I'm not a nurse, but I'm around nurses daily so I get to witness a lot to comment on it and give pointers to my friend. Just saying.

If you're not a nurse, you don't get it. You don't "witness" the whole experience. If you're not a nurse, you have no idea what it's like.

Just like in that other thread, the fact that your mom, your aunt and 15 cousins are nurses doesn't give you any actual nursing experience or credibility.

I should probably change the title then because it wasn't made clear to me until now that this was the reason why people are getting offended? I only meant this thread to share some insight on my friend's thoughts of how she really don't know what she's getting herself into until she gets a real glimpse of it, and their are more people like that who just chose nursing because it's convenience. Like how I wanted to be a veterinarian not know anything about it until I actually shadowed a vet, and that's when I quickly changed majors when the time was convenient.

The header is one reason people are getting offended. Your judgmental tone about anyone who goes into nursing for the MONEY is another. And your proclamation that you know about nursing because you're around nurses is a third. There are others, but you get the drift.

Of course you can. I am not a nurse, but have worked with hundreds of nurses for several years. I think I can explain to someone what it is like to be a nurse. I see it every time I work. Sure, I lack that experience on my own, but I can explain things they do, interactions with patients and doctors, meds they handle, assessments done, etc.

You don't even know what you don't know.

Lol, I did not make this thread to "dog" my friend because if I wanted to I would've wrote her name in the post. I also did not create this thread to elicit responses, otherwise I would've asked for your response like I do in my other posts. This thread was made solely on the purpose to inform others how people really do think that nursing is a laid back, clean profession. So if I came off as if I was chastising my friend then I apologize because that was not my intent and I didn't do it intentionally.

I'm pretty sure the moderators would have taken your friend's name out of your post, and may even have assigned you points. Yes, your posts come off as chastising. And if you didn't want responses, you shouldn't have posted on a public forum.

But!!!!!!!! What about all those hot young residents, or if she's in a community hospital, the MDs fresh off residency?!!!! lol

Young residents and MDs fresh off residency aren't male nurses. Many of them are married and those that aren't have usually accumulated mountains of debt.

Wow lol, I didn't think my post would offend so many people (like jeez).

Yeah, I did make her aware of the financial obligation, but I cannot in any way stop a grown woman from doing what she wants to do.

As an adult, I tend not to take advice from individuals who compulsively use "LOL" and phrases such as "like jeez," so it really is no surprise that she is resisting your "help."

I think it would be really cool to be a flight attendant. You get to travel the world, see interesting places, and interact with many people. Yet, flight attendants make diddly poo for wages, and I would never pursue such a career. In other words, what is wrong with wanting to go into a given career because individuals in that profession make good money?

In addition, I went to ADN school and later went on for my BSN. Guess what? Big financial mistake. Most of my loan money is from my ADN program. While my BSN would have cost more as a first degree than as a second degree, that first degree BSN would still leave me with way less debt that the ADN did.

You are correct that she may not know what it is really like to be a nurse. She may not be making the best financial decision (then again, who knows what the best decision may be?). You probably have good intentions. However, stop pretending that you absolutely know what is best for your adult friend.
