The Trump Thread

Published

I confess to back pedaling into Trump territory when I wanted to leave discussions about him in the garbage can.  My thread on the read-only break room site has 9,600 replies so I thought I'd bring up a new one.

He's not going away.

Haberman's book is out based on interviews.  I won't read it, but the excerpts are interesting.  Especially what he says about McConnell, a description that's against the Terms of Service here, but I actually don't disagree with.  LOL

Quote

“At one point, Trump made a candid admission that was as jarring as it was ultimately unsurprising. ‘The question I get asked more than any other question: “If you had it to do again, would you have done it?”’Trump said of running for president. ‘The answer is, yeah, I think so. Because here’s the way I look at it. I have so many rich friends and nobody knows who they are.’ … Reflecting on the meaning of having been president of the United States, his first impulse was not to mention public service, or what he felt he’d accomplished, only that it appeared to be a vehicle for fame, and that many experiences were only worth having if someone else envied them.”

Former President Donald Trump is wildly distorting new statistics on immigration and crime to attack Vice President Kamala Harris.

Wildly distorting is the same as lying, right?

Quote

Trump falsely claimed Friday and Saturday that the statistics are specifically about criminal offenders who entered the US during the Biden-Harris administration; in reality, the figures are about offenders who entered the US over multiple decades, including during the Trump administration. And Trump falsely claimed that the statistics are specifically about people who are now living freely in the US; the figures actually include people who are currently in jails and prisons serving criminal sentences.

This a reminder that in the 2020 election cycle, Trump was the largest source of lies an be disinformation about a pandemic and about election security.  He lies about everything, it's part of his mental health pathology.

Quote

The statistics have been deployed by Trump and various Republican lawmakers and right-wing commentators as alarming evidence of Harris' supposed mismanagement of immigration policy. But in addition to exaggerating her role on the file — she was never actually "border czar" — much of the chatter has inaccurately described what the statistics show.

A spokesperson for the Department of Homeland Security, which oversees ICE, said in a Saturday email: "The data in this letter is being misinterpreted. The data goes back decades; it includes individuals who entered the country over the past 40 years or more, the vast majority of whose custody determination was made long before this Administration. It also includes many who are under the jurisdiction or currently incarcerated by federal, state or local law enforcement partners.”

So we can explain away Trump's lies as a part of his mental illness.  What excuse is there for the "various Republican lawmakers and right-wing commentators"? Are they simply fascists using lies and misinformation to elevate a crazy authoritarian who only has concepts of plans and will go along with P2025 because it will give him so much power?

Also there is allot of word use/choice propaganda.  Like using "immigrant" without the "illegal" in front. In an attempt to cast Trump is against all immigrants.

I noticed an abundance of ad hominiem and accusations of "projection " and "deflection ". Followed by religious type repetition and a common adherence to a narrative. "Weird".

Using qualifiers like "mental illness" and "dementia" as if they were 100 % proven facts.

It's all very strategic and it works.

Trump did, in fact, trash talk legal immigrants in Springfield, Ohio.  He continues to reference that area when he talks about his mass deportations.

https://abcnews.go.com/Politics/trump-vows-mass-deportation-migrants-springfield-dismisses-threats/story?id=113661663

It is strategic to maintain a safe level of ignorance about what Trump actually says and does. That strategy has been in play for 8 long years here in the USA.

There was a similar strategy among the German people in their early 20th century politics.  The faithfully ignorant were really horrified when they were required to confront the atrocious conduct that they diligently avoided and ignored. They were horrified, largely because they knew what was going on but kept denying and pretending until the world required them to see.  They had submitted to the propaganda that made those people their perceived enemies... others who were harming their country and society.  You are familiar with the rhetoric used, and how Trump's language is eerily similar, right?

It's weird for the person who went on and on about Biden's incapacitating dementia to now have such strict standards for the descriptors used by others.  No wait, it's not really that weird, it's more like boiler plate hypocrisy attached to a double standard.  Fully expected.

Trump Erie Rally today  CSPAN video.

"Kamala is mentally impaired " while seconds later says she should be impeached and prosecuted over border immigration.

Trump says VP Harris will let 150-200 Million People Enter the U.S. Illegally.

"If you had one day — like one real, rough, nasty day with the drugstores as an example. ... One rough hour, and I mean real rough, the word will get out and it will end immediately,” Trump said, referring to allowing police to physically counter shoplifters.

Trump Doubles Down On Personal Attacks Against Harris—After Republicans Condemn 'Mentally Impaired' Claim

Trump escalates attacks on Harris' mental fitness and suggests she should be prosecuted  as some Republicans distance themselves, like Larry Hogan

Quote

Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump escalated his personal attacks on his Democratic rival, Kamala Harris, on Sunday by repeating an insult that she was "mentally impaired" while also saying she should be "impeached and prosecuted.”

Trump's rally in Erie, Pennsylvania, took on similar themes as an event one day earlier that he himself described as a "dark speech.” He told a cheering crowd Sunday that Harris was responsible for an "invasion" at the U.S.-Mexico border and "she should be impeached and prosecuted for her actions.”

"Crooked Joe Biden became mentally impaired,” he added. "Sad. But lying Kamala Harris, honestly, I believe she was born that way. There's something wrong with Kamala. And I just don't know what it is, but there is definitely something missing. And you know what, everybody knows it.”...

With just over a month until the election, Trump is intensifying his use of personal and offensive attacks, even as some Republicans say he'd be better off sticking to the issues.

His suggestions that political enemies be prosecuted are particularly notable for their departure from norms in the U.S. in which the justice system is supposed to be protected from political influence. In recent weeks, Trump has threatened prosecutions of Google for allegedly giving priority to "good stories" about Harris and Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg..

Seems like projection to me

Quote

WOW, Lindsey Graham saying Trump went too far....Former Republican Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan, running now for Senator, also criticized Trump's comments, telling CBS on Sunday, "I think that's insulting not only to the vice president, but to people that actually do have mental disabilities,” adding, "I've said for years that Trump's divisive rhetoric is something that we could do without.”

McALLEN, Texas (Border Report) — The head of Immigration and Customs Enforcement told a Texas border lawmaker this week that 435,000 undocumented migrants with criminal convictions have been released by the agency to cities around the United States

It seems that criminals are being released into the US.

So are those who claim otherwise, liars?

Opinion | Trump gets compared with history's great villain because his rhetoric is that bad

Quote

According to Vance, even tame think pieces about "threats to democracy" (and, er, worries about "fascism”) are sufficient to incite bloodshed; he has blamed such rhetoric for "directly" causing two apparent assassination attempts on Trump. Given that logic, what does Vance expect to happen to people who are being falsely accused of rape and murder — and who aren't protected by the Secret Service?
Vance is correct that words have power. If not wielded responsibly, they can lead to political violence — which, to be clear, I wholeheartedly condemn. But one can denounce political violence and still be clear-eyed about the historical patterns that Trump evokes and, therefore, the need to defeat him soundly at the ballot box.

Even Godwin Law's namesake, Mike Godwin, wrote in a Post op-ED last year that he agrees the Hitler analogy is not just apt but necessary. He cited Trump's authoritarian instincts for consolidating state power in a single leader; dehumanizing political enemies as "vermin”; and claiming that immigrants were "poisoning the blood of our country,” an infamous Hitler talking point. "Those of us who hope to preserve our democratic institutions need to underscore the resemblance before we enter the twilight of American democracy,” Godwin wrote in December.

Words have power.  Trump is reckless with his words.

The estimated population of unauthorized immigrants in the U.S. stands at around 11 million people. Although the number has stabilized, the United States has seen a spike in migrant encounters in the last few years, with over two million cases registered by the U.S. Border Patrol in 2023

I've included the letter that the article referenced.  I think that the letter outlines who is released and who is not and how those decisions are made.

The rhetoric of the republican politicians is a different matter. They are clearly laying the blame for inadequate funding and staffing and detention capacity at the border on the Biden administration.  We all know they refused to pass legislation that could have improved all of those things and more.

Pointing fingers at someone else doesn't change or detract from Trump's lies about immigration or the lies and spin of his sychophants.

That's a silly statement.  More could be detained had Trump not sabotaged the border bill for his own political benefit.

Rep. Sen. Jeff Flake was a member of the Gang of Eight, a bipartisan group of senators who tried but failed to achieve a large-scale immigration reform overhaul in 2013.

Quote

The Gang of Eight was a bi-partisan group of eight United States Senators—four Democrats and four Republicans—who wrote the Border Security, Economic Opportunity, and Immigration Modernization Act of 2013.[1]

In June 2013, S.744 passed the Senate with a strong majority—68–32, with 14 Republicans joining all Democrats. The United States House of Representatives under Speaker John Boehner (R) did not act on the bill, however, and it expired at the end of the 113th Congress.[2]

So TWO bipartisan attempts in 12 years sabotaged by Republican leaders.

Flake resigned last month after serving as US Ambassador to Turkey, endorsing Kamala Harris, says 'she's ready' for the job
