This final decision ends constitutional protection for abortion, returning the rights to state legislatures.

In a historic and far-reaching decision, the U.S. Supreme Court officially reversed Roe v. Wade on Friday, declaring that the constitutional right to abortion, upheld for nearly a half century, no longer exists.

Supreme Court overturns Roe v. Wade, ending right to abortion upheld for decades

Do you think the Supreme Court made the right decision or gone too far?

I don't agree with reversing Roe vs Wade. I've seen many thought provoking posts. One which really stuck with me posits the idea that oh yeah, prevent abortions! Don't kill the babies!! Then it shows a pic showing all the unwanted children born with these same people now criticizing the women who have birthed these babies with "get a job!" Stop relying on welfare for your kid!", etc.  In other words, who is going to support all these children who the government, whether the national or state, has said with this reversal now have to be born.  If the mother is unable to or unwilling to care for them, it will fall to the welfare system to do so (which means foster care,  social services, etc.  all of whom have had budget cuts on top of budget cuts. Where is the money supposed to come from? Are the people who have been so eager to vote this into law going to fund the agencies and people who will care for these new people? Why about the babies who are born profoundly disabled due to birth defects that were discovered during early gestation? Or the child whose birth results in his mother's death due to a medical issue that made her pregnancy very high risk?  Shouldn't there be provisions made for these and some other circumstances?  My niece is on birth control but if it should fail and she becomes pregnant, her life is at risk due to heart valve problems.  She is too young to have a tubal ligation according to the doctors as well as it being an additional surgical risk that her doctors do not want her to take. As well as an ectopic pregnancy.  This is life threatening as well.   So those who are pro- life; I want you to think about these things. I wouldn't want an abortion myself; it would tear my heart apart. But there are reasons that an abortion is the only solution that will save a mother's life, even if she doesn't want to have to do it.  Also with abortion being illegal now, how long will it be before someone accuses a mother of causing an abortion when a natural miscarriage occurs? There is many times no way to tell what has caused a miscarriage,  and in addition to the horrible guilt a grieving mother may feel, now she'll be made to prove she didn't cause it to happen?? Did this make sense to any thinking person??

Women can still have abortions and access to abortions without interference. They just have to go to the areas that allow it. It's simply a matter of law - or lack of law to be more accurate. There's no constitutional protection because it's simply not in the constitution regardless of how someone feels about it. With that there is still plenty of opportunity to have access to these options. It just won't be as convenient. But why should it have to be convenient? It may be a necessary procedure, but it should definitely not be looked at in the same category as typical birth control. Aside from the obvious rape situation there are many ways to avoid getting pregnant.

I disagree.  It IS interference to have to travel out of state to obtain a relatively simple medical procedure.

There are a number of important things not explicitly in the constitution; marriage, privacy, executive privilege, the filibuster, separation of church and state, the right to vote... I'm sure there are others.

Why shouldn't medical procedures be convenient? Didn't you say without interference? Making the services inaccessible or prohibitively inconvenient is a tactic that's been in use for a long time.  Do you agree with that interference?

Of course abortion shouldn't be looked at in the same way as typical birth control. They aren't at all the same.  Typical birth control works to prevent pregnancy in some fashion.  Abortion is a termination of something, in this case a pregnancy. Data shows that good access to affordable and effective birth control results in fewer abortions. Unfortunately, too many women live in areas with poor access to affordable birth control... contraceptive deserts, if you will.

Yes, there are good ways to prevent unwanted pregnancy and, IMV, our efforts and priorities should be on supporting women by improving overall access to affordable birth control.  The efforts should be focused on low income counties and regions where vulnerable women do not have the resources to travel or spend extra time trying to obtain essential reproductive services.  We should not be limiting access to needed care, especially for vulnerable women.

"Women can still have abortions and access to abortions without interference. They just have to go to the areas that allow it. It's simply a matter of law - or lack of law to be more accurate."

Unfortunately, the above is not true. There are states that are in the process of making it illegal for a provider to refer a patient to another provider(another state) for an abortion. The law will then be able to prosecute said provider(doctor, nurse) with a potential sentence of life in prison or never to be able to practice anywhere again.

It's also interesting to realize that with this reversal, women now have less authority over their bodies than dead people. No one is allowed to harvest organs from a deceased person unless it indicates "organ donor" on the license or the family approves.

It says something that the only ones supporting overturning Roe v Wade are first time posters that are just here to troll AN.

The only arguments I see for banning abortion are uneducated, misguided, and narrow sighted.

1 - An early fetal "heartbeat" is not a heartbeat like it is for anyone reading this and is no more capable of supporting a cardiovascular system than my washing machine.

2 - The Constitution doesn't specifically mention A LOT. It's a short four page document. Saying something isn't covered because it's not specifically mentioned just makes me think someone failed some classes.

3 - I've noticed that some of those that are against abortion are also the same people against supporting families through social programs. It seems some people would like to tell others what to do but then abandon them afterwards.

4 - I've also noticed that the same people against abortion are the same ones telling people they should just use contraceptives while failing to acknowledge the uneven access to affordable healthcare AND are voting for those who are doing everything in their power to ensure universal and/or affordable healthcare never happens in the United States.

Basically what I've noticed is that the only way I've really seen people justifying banning abortions is through a unique set of mental gymnastics. Maybe I'm wrong and I'm open to hear otherwise but overturning Roe v Wade seems to be a pretty clear setback for healthcare, safety, and women's rights and I don't think it's going to stop here.

It's 2022 and Planned Parenthood has been in Business since the 1950s  along with Reproduction education in the school system. How sad that in 60+ years the number of 'needed' abortions annually keeps going UP.  How many of those are really due to life or death risk to the mother or for genetic anomalies of the fetus?

Lack of access to prevention is a farce. Every school across the country can be an access point for contraceptives but also should be working WITH students and parents (a Village)to educate, monitor, assess  the effectiveness of what is being taught, intervene The goal should be graduates who are prepared, stable and capable of managing themselves, (self discipline) living a healthy lifestyle, emotionally, financially ready for becoming parents.

My job as a child was to participate and prepare myself for adulthood and if emotionally and financially capable to become a parent. It took me 5 pregnancies. My job as a parent was to bring my son up the same way and I did. He's 37 and is now in a position where he is ready and desires to marry and have a family.

If Planned Parenthood and those who defend or support it really want to do some good for women how about developing a universal action plan working with Public Health agencies, insurers, churches etc. to truly assist women of all ages in planning how and when they become capable, responsible parents. Currently good healthy messages aren't getting through. Young women are looking for love, having casual sex, are being exploited and targeted by media and commerce, Young Boys to old men who havent acquired self control or refuse to.

There is no escaping the consequences of our actions. Each person must bear the responsibility for their education and actions.

This revisit of Roe vs. Wade is a sad testimony of our failure to be responsible.

This is on each of us. Our actions or lack there of got us to this point.

Apathy, wearing blinders and other f actors have worked hand in hand to bring us to this tipping point.

The court shouldn't have had to do this.

So everyone who's out their protesting, this is your wake up call.

Be responsible. Be respectful of youself and others. Let's make our goal reducing the need for abortions.

Men rush to get vasectomies after Roe ruling

Quote

“It is something I put on the back-burner of my mind until very recently, when the Supreme Court decision happened,” said Figueroa, 27, who lives in Tampa. “That was basically the triggering factor right there. It pushed my mind to say: ‘Okay, I really do not want children. I’m going to get this vasectomy now.’ ”

Figueroa is not alone. Urologists told The Washington Post that they have seen a spike in requests for the procedure in response to the Supreme Court’s decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization.

Quote

Stein said that before Friday, he received four or five vasectomy requests a day. Since the court’s decision was announced, that number has spiked to 12 to 18 requests per day.

Quote

Philip Werthman, a Los Angeles urologist, also reported a “300 to 400 percent” increase in the number of vasectomy consultations he has performed. Esgar Guarín, an Iowa-based urologist who trained under Stein and specializes in vasectomies, said he has seen a “200 to 250 percent” increase in traffic on his website offering information specifically about vasectomies.

Quote

Figueroa echoed the sentiment, saying what has unfolded in the days since last week acted as the final push he needed to register for the vasectomy he had long been considering.

“This is probably one of the very, very rare things in politics that actually does affect me very personally and very hard,” he said. “It really woke my eyes up.”

The court didn't have to do this... it was a choice based in right wing religious activism and dishonesty.

It's like you forgot what it's like to be young.  Not everyone is like you.  Young people have developing minds. They make irrational emotional reckless decisions.  I know when you were young your job was to participate and prepare yourself for adulthood but to expect this from every young person is just inward-looking and unrealistic.   All I'm saying is take it easy.

I also want to mention that even after vasectomy it is possible to get a woman pregnant; the man needs to have a sperm count for a specific length of time after the procedure to make sure it was totally effective.  This can be up to 10 months in some cases.  There have been documented cases of pregnancies happening after vasectomy. The chances are very low but it can happen. There's also the chance of a failure (such as reaatachment, scar tissue showing a channel to form or even a mistake during surgery) while these are very rare,  it is worth noting, they can happen and then you have an unintended pregnancy because the couple thought they were safe due to the vasectomy.  So warm the men you know that in order to be completely safe, have a regular sperm count just to be sure.
