Now this is really gonna gross you out. When I was an LPN back in my nursing home days, I had this one patient that would not put down her spit cup for anything. (I'm getting queasy just typing this:barf02:). This little old sweet lady had an apparently over-productive salivary gland. Anyway, I was young and still learning how to be assertive because assertiveness was just not in my nature. I had to give her the morning meds. She didn't put down her cup. I handed her a cup of water, which she placed on the table. Then I gave her the medicine cup with pills in it, which she also placed on the table as she cleared her mouth one last time before taking her pills. Gross! Well, she placed all of the pills in her mouth as she normally does and handed me the empty med cup. I turned away just for a second to toss that filthy cup, only to turn back to see her turning up the spit cup! I LOST IT!!!:barf02::sour::barf02:

I could not eat for a week! I actually had to retype this post because just the mere thought of that experience sent me running for the sink. OMG!!! I can deal with a C-diff patient with dysentery better than I can handle a sputum collection!!

I can handle anything except vomit. I will suction the heck out of your patient or change your patient's colostomy bag whatever you want me to do...but I can't handle puke.

I once had a patient that had a chunk of pineapple sticking out of her stoma. No joke and I can't eat pineapple to this day :grumpy:

I had a patient want to discharge so bad that she didn't want to tell me that she was nauseated. After she went home I went into her room to remove her food tray and picked up a glass that I thought contained a smoothie...and it was vomit. I started gagging so hard that one of my coworkers had to remove the tray for me...

Vomit gets to me. Sputum is a distant second, but as long as I have suction or a tissue handy, sputum is not as bad.

I had a patient's wife pass out while I was hanging blood. She didn't warn me and I didn't think to ask her. Now I always ask if they're ok to stay in the room. Luckily she landed in the soft recliner behind her. She knew what I was about to do and told me later that she knew she would possibly pass out. I'm glad she didn't fall!

Well.....after starting in endoscopy i couldn't eat over easy eggs for a loooonnnggg time. You endoscopy nurses know what I'm talking about :yuck:.

I can handle the smells and look of about anything but the sound of someone retching to vomit makes me gag.
