The Movie and TV Thread

Updated:   Published

I started a thread here that I meant to put somewhere else,  and I erased it.  So what to discuss in the coffee lounge?

Have you seen any good movies lately?

Last movie I saw was "The Last Duel". Pretty good.

Anyone seen "Dune"?  I see it's available for streaming and might rent it.  It's up for an Academy Award for best picture.

Wednesday is one of the most popular shows on Netflix of all time.  Season 2 currently is #1.  It's from the creator of avant guard cinema Tim Burton.

For me it's really just mind candy fund to watch to get distracted and not have to think much.  I enjoy the special effects and the acting of the main star is really good.

I enjoyed Christina Ricci's contribution.  I enjoyed her iteration of Wednesday, so it was fun to see her again.  It's kind of a fun spin off story and I can see why it's liked.

Downton Abbey the Grand Finale, after 15 years of getting to know the characters and being invested in them this one is for the fans.  It centers around the one of the main characters trying to regroup after scandalous divorce and take the helms of family business of Downton Abbey as her father retires.  It also deals with the retirement of the long time cook and butler whom are also beloved characters.  But there are children on the horizon and times they are a changing in old time Britain.

Again, if you're a fan and view of the TV series and two prior movies, you'll enjoy this one which is supposedly the conclusion.  They dedicated it to long time character of the series Dame Maggie Smith.

I really enjoyed it but if you're not a fan you might find it a bit flat.

The Materialist is an indie film with A-listers Dakota Johnson (who is coming off bad press and reviews for her disaster of a film "Madame Webb"), Chris Evans and Pedro Pascal.

Johnson's character is a matchmaker and learns some lessons about love and what's important.  She does some self-reflection.  It's billed as a romantic comedy but it didn't seem to have a comedic element in it to me.

It's really well done and a good movie and got generally favorable reviews.

Highest 2 Lowest is an A24 movie on Apple TV that is directed by Spike Lee and stars the great Denzel Washington.  Denzel's character is a famous music mogul on the downswing whose son is kidnapped.  When it turns out it was his nephew and not his son he at first struggles with the idea of being cash strapped and paying a ransom he can't afford for someone else's son.  Ultimately he does the right thing and agrees to pay the ransom, but then the plot thickens some.

Very good movie and Mr. Washington at 70 years old does a good job.  Rap star A$AP Rocky plays the kidnapper and aspiring rapper and is good as well.

Sorry Baby is an indie movie from A24 about a college professor trying to navigate the world after a sexual assault by one of her mentors.  It's slow moving but emotional and well done.  It's billed as a comedy-drama but there's very little comedy in my opinion.  But like the review says, not a dour drama either.

So many women navigate life after sexual assault that is easy to imagine that some are using humor and we just don't know.  We don't know about the sexual abuse in most women's lives. We just get to look around us and know that every 4th or 5th female has experienced some type of sexually inappropriate behavior.

I'm not sure I'll be watching this one.  We'll see what the wife says.

28 Years Later is a gore movie on Netflix that follows up on a 2002 film about the human race becoming infected with a virus that turns them into zombie like creatures.   Only the infected can infect well humans so the idea is to keep away from the infected and kill them when they come after you.

28 years later a remote Scottish Island is uninfected and ventures out to the "mainland" only on occasion when the tide is low.   The plot follows a teen going to the mainland at great risk to find a doctor to heal his sick mother.

It's okay.  It's good for what it is, a gore movie with zombies.

It was a different kind of coming of age movie.  I didn't really enjoy it much.  Like you said,  it was OK for it's genre.

Last night I watched "Death at a Funeral" - the British version (the first - then there was a version made in US).  It is about 20 years old but boy did I laugh. My husband said he hadn't heard me laugh like the in ages. It was on the Roku channel. The American version is good too, I watched that on a plane going to the UK and was afraid I was laughing too loud.  I don't know who shows the American version - the app Just Watch is good for finding out.

I do watch a lot of British TV (new and old - Going to rewatch 'Brideshead Revisited' for the the 99th time) so I liked seeing my favorite actors.

I unfortunately had the privilege to watch the movie in theaters when it first came out. I had high hopes as I enjoyed the 2 "28" movies prior. The environment, scenery, and setting were pretty good, but the overall plot was just like....what? LOL.

Black Rabbit is the story of a restauranteur and brother, both with dark pasts who keep digging deeper and deeper holes as they navigate a world of corruption and crime as they navigate how to repay a debilitating debt and you can't see how it's going to end well for either of them.

It's an 8-episode series on Netflix.

It's very tense, well acted by Jason Bateman and Jude Law, and pretty good cinematography of New York City.
