The Movie and TV Thread

Updated:   Published

I started a thread here that I meant to put somewhere else,  and I erased it.  So what to discuss in the coffee lounge?

Have you seen any good movies lately?

Last movie I saw was "The Last Duel". Pretty good.

Anyone seen "Dune"?  I see it's available for streaming and might rent it.  It's up for an Academy Award for best picture.

Thanks Stars.  I do not have that app but a high score in the 90s is a good indicator for me that I will like a movie/series.  I can't find the app in the play store though.

Case in point:  Warfare has a 93% on RT.  It's a brutal account of an event the Navy Seals went through on the Iraq War.  It's a true story.  It's realistic and I actually turned the sound off when an injured Seal screamed and screamed. I liked it a lot but it certainly wasn't entertaining

Sirens is a five-episode limited series on Netflix.  It stars well known older actors Juianne Moore and Keven Bacon.  But the main focus is on sisters played by Miley Alcok and Meghann Fahy.  All of whom do an excellent job, especially the younger actresses.  It's a dramedy with some twists and turns with some underline themes of power, money, control, misunderstanding and family dynamics loyalty,  and PTSD.

It's really worth a watch.

My wife put this on our watch list.  I enjoyed it and thanked her for the addition.

The Narrow Road to the Deep North is on Amazon Prime (I pay the couple of dollars of months to watch shows ad free, and money well spent but I'm bitter.).

It's a five-part Australian miniseries that deals with an adult man in 1989ish dealing with PTSD and marital problems while flashing back to World War II when he had a passionate affair and fell in love with his uncle's wife and his horrific time was a POW in a Japanese camp in Thailand.

It is the best mini-series I've seen this year and in a good while. It's very well done from every aspect from acting, cinematography to script.  It's enjoys the rare 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.  It's very somber and one scene in particular in the POW camp is brutal.

It's going to be difficult for me to watch movies about POW camps in the jungle for a spell.

It's very well done, but certainly not for everyone, certainly I would think Veterans would have issues with it as it's realistically brutal.

This showed up on my algorithm the other day.  I've give it a look see.  I generally like his deep dives and content.  But he's not without his critics.  He's out to sensationalize and make money which is fair enough, but he's somewhat of a cherry picker as well.

Quote

Johnny Harris, a journalist known for his video essays, has faced criticism for alleged oversimplification, factual inaccuracies, and omitting key historical context in his coverage of complex topics like the Russo-Ukrainian War and colonialism. Some critics argue his work prioritizes sensationalism over accuracy and disregards historical nuance

Murderbot is a really good AppleTV comedy sci-fi movie about a partial human, mostly robot that's designed to provide security for his clients but he overrides an internal device that gives him some free will.

It enjoys an impressive 96% on Rotten Tomatoes and is reviewed for a 2nd Season.

On a side note there were some silly reactions to lead actors Skarsgard's nude scene in which is was revealed he doesn't have a penis.  I guess the robots don't need it.  LOL

North of North is a Netflix comedy set in the arctic of Canada set around a small tight nit community.  It's really a good 8-show series and just got the news very recently it's been renewed for another season.

Amongst the Wolves is a low-budget indie movie from Ireland about man that loses everything after a tour in Afghanistan and becomes involved with a homeless youth in trouble.  The lead actor is very good, the story is layered with nuances and is violent.  Overall I'd give it a 4 of 5 stars.  Well done.

Lady Blue is a documentary on Amazon Prime that is short and is really for the fans.

Being more of a 70's kid when I became aware of music culture I came to know Joni Mitchell through her brilliant album Court and Spark which today is one of my favorite albums.  Later I got "Blue" which is on many "best of" lists.  In fact Rolling Stone  has it listed as the third best album of all time behind Marvin Gaye and The Beach Boys.

The documentary has splices together interviews of her from the past and talks about her life.  She comes across as very intelligently introspective and analytical.

How to Make Millions Before Grandma Dies is a Thai movie that was very successful in Thailand.  It is the only movie to make it to the top 15 short list of best International Films at the Oscars.  It enjoys a 98% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

As with some SE Asian movies I've seen, it's a very slow burn of a movie and they aren't prone to dramatic outbursts of emotion like Bollywood for example.  The moods are very nuanced and requires patients of the view and good acting by the actors.  It's the story of a young aimless man that takes care of his grandmother in the hope that she will leave him something.

Also you have to take the title in the context of the Thai currency where one million Thai baht is about $31K so "millions" wouldn't be much and the grandmother isn't rich.

The movie is layers with her three adult children each having their own issues in the family and each struggling with their mother's impending death from cancer.

I really liked the movie.  It's on Netflix and has subtitles.

ugh..sorry about the typos above.  LOL

The Surfer is a movie that stars Nicolas Cage as a former surfer who is trying to buy home in a neighborhood he grew up in and wants to take is son suffering but gets rejected by a strange cult of surfers and their leader,  after which a series of unfortunate events occur that causes him to push his limits and nearly break down.

As I mentioned before I think Cage is a fine actor and he carries this film.  Ultimately I think it falls a little short in fulfilling where it could go, but a good film nonetheless.

Maye 3.5 of 5 stars.
