The Movie and TV Thread

Updated:   Published

I started a thread here that I meant to put somewhere else,  and I erased it.  So what to discuss in the coffee lounge?

Have you seen any good movies lately?

Last movie I saw was "The Last Duel". Pretty good.

Anyone seen "Dune"?  I see it's available for streaming and might rent it.  It's up for an Academy Award for best picture.

Easily one of my top all time TV series. Hiroyuki Sanada and Anna Sawai are great actors, though I'm not necessarily too fond of Cosmo Jarvis. Not sure if it's the actor himself or the type/style he was made to play in the series. The series was slated for one season, but it got so many great reviews and with audience raving for a second season that they ended up going for it. I am definitely hyped for the second season and what story they have coming next.

I believe you're talking about "Shogun" which is on a network I don't have and haven't seen it but would love to as I love Japanese culture.  This is another series altogether.

Sinners is a movie on Amazon Prime.  There's a lot of hype around this movie and it was a box office success, and is on the "best of" movie lists of most critics.  It's cleaning up in nominations for awards such as a whopping 17 Critics Choice nominations and 7 Golden Globes nominations and is surely going to get several Oscar nominations.

It does live up to its hype and it is an excellent movie, well acted, well scripted and very well filmed.  Plus the music is great.   Starts out with twin brothers opening up a "juke joint" in 1930's Mississippi and slowly unfolds into a vampire horror movie.

PLUR1BUS is an Apple TV series in 9 episodes.  It's gotten good reviews and Golden Globe nominations for its lead actress and Best Series Drama.

It's kind of like what would happen if everyone in the world except for 11 people became zombies, but good happy zombies that can't lie or hurt anyone and anything and are connected to each other mentally.  If any of the 11 has a meltdown or becomes angry they go into a seizure state and many of them die, so one of their immediate concerns is to keep the 11 happy and this means granting them anything they want and taking them anywhere they want.....until they can figure out how to convert them to join them.

It's really good and well acted and a very unique story...is it a good thing there are zombies taking care of the world, each other and the environment, or does something lurk underneath that makes it evil?

The very annoying this is that it clearly ends unresolved and apparently Season 2 won't be ready for a couple of years.  Really?

One Battle After Another is a really good movie that stars A-lister Leonardo DiCaprio and is getting great reviews and stacking up award nominations including Best Picture and Best Actor.   Benicio Del Toro scored a Golden Globe nomination in supporting actor, as did Teyana Taylor who appears in the first half of the movie.

Interestingly it's in the "Comedy/Musical" category for Best Picture at the Golden Globes and that seems fraudulent as there might be some light hearted moments it not a comedy in my opinion.  Sean Penn is also a major supporting character and is really good.

Well acted, well directed and a very good story about some revolutionaries set out to change the world through violence, along with some social commentary surrounding immigration and power.

Weapons is a good horror movie with a great cast.  It hits all the right notes with suspense and gore.  It has a fast paced sit on the edge of your seat ending.  It got generally good reviews and one of the supporting actresses, 75 year old Amy Madigan, just won a major prize, the Critic's Choice Aware for Best Supporting Actress in a movie.  She's also up for the Golden Globe and seems a likely Oscar nominee as well.

Marty Supreme is a really good movie starring A-lister Timothy Chalamet as a somewhat narcissistic ping pong player in 1950's New York trying to find his way in the world without settling down into domestic live with a real job.

I think this role will solidify Chalamet's reputation as one of the best actors of his generation and currently.  He's consistently made really good choices in his roles.  For this role there is Oscar buzz that he's the front runner.  He won the Critic's Choice Award for Best Actor and is up for the Golden Globe.

I saw over the weekend and really enjoyed it.  Youre right, Chalamet was fantastic.

If I Had Legs, I Would Kick You is an indie movie about a therapist that is on the verge of a nervous breakdown herself.  The lead actress Rose Byrne gives a magnificent performance and is getting every major award nomination so far and most likely will also get an Academy Award nomination too.

Interestingly it costars Conan O'Brien whom I didn't realize was acting in movies.  He does okay as her therapist throughout.  Rapper/actor A$AP Rocky also has a supporting role.

It can be disturbing as she's the mother a of a child with some mysterious illness and you struggle with her poor decisions as mother, as well as trying to find some compassion for her predicaments.

Overall, I really liked this movie.
