I started a thread here that I meant to put somewhere else, and I erased it. So what to discuss in the coffee lounge?
Have you seen any good movies lately?
Last movie I saw was "The Last Duel". Pretty good.
Anyone seen "Dune"? I see it's available for streaming and might rent it. It's up for an Academy Award for best picture.
The Brutalist is a pretty decent movie that I'm a bit baffled on how to describe it so I'll include a review. Really great acting by the cast, three of whom are up for major awards this season as it it's director. It really is good.
QuoteOne of the many things that makes Brady Corbet's "The Brutalist" so essential is how it defies easy categorization. It is "about" so many things without specifically hammering, highlighting, or bullet-pointing them. Sure, it's impossible to miss the commentary on capitalism embedded in the script by Corbet and Mona Fastvold. Still, it's also a story of immigration, addiction, Zionism, architecture, inequity, class, violence, and even filmmaking. The word ambitious is overused in modern criticism, but the very existence of "The Brutalist" feels like a miracle: An original story shot on VistaVision cameras, released in 70mm, complete with overture and intermission. It's a film that turns inward into itself, winding its themes around its characters like a great American novel.

A complete unknown tells the story of the legendary Bob Dylan when he arrives to New York City and ends with the highly controversial "Bob Dylan goes electric" story of him playing a folk festival not as a purist but with electric guitar.
It's widely critically acclaimed both for its story but acting with several academy award nominations including best picture and best actor. Very good movie. Loved it and the music is great.

Agreed. A gem for boomers especially.
A Real Pain is a dramedy about two cousins on a trip to Poland to visit their grandmother's homeland. She is a survivor of WWII.
I liked it a lot. Very good script and acting.
Category fraud is being committed in the awards season in that lead actor Kueran Culkin is winning all kinds of awards as a supporting actor. He won the Golden Globe and is up for an Academy Award as supporting actor. The studio knew most likely he would win this category rather than actor. Anyway, he's really good and worthy of his awards.
Touch is a romantic story of a man from Iceland with a terminal illness that sets out in 2020 when covid was first hitting the world too look for a long lost love while there is still time. It switches from past the present effectively and is a good quiet story that keeps your attention.
Hard Truths is a British film about a dysfunctional family lead by a cranky matriarch who flies off that handle at the drop of a hat. The main character is very well acted by Marianne Jean-Baptiste and she has received accolades such as Critics Choice and BAFTA nomination for Best Actress. It is billed as a comedy and the way she explodes at random people like in the grocery store or a furniture store is indeed funny, but underlying is a lot of inner turmoil.

"100 Years of Solitude" is a series on Netflix, The first 8 episodes are out now. It's based on the novel of the same name which is considered a masterpiece in Latin American literature.
It follows a couple in Columbia who in the 1800, along with some follows establish a utopian type settlement in the swamps. The settlement is initially utopian and peaceful and then the modern world enters in. The family and subsequent generations go through many trials and tribulations along the way. Also has some magical elements to it.
What I like about it that is very unpredictable and very unique and clever. The acting is really good. It can be a bit dramatic as Latin American shows tend to be but it's all very well done.
Apparently there are eight more episodes to conclude the series but won't be released until next year. It is dubbed in English.
