I started a thread here that I meant to put somewhere else, and I erased it. So what to discuss in the coffee lounge?
Have you seen any good movies lately?
Last movie I saw was "The Last Duel". Pretty good.
Anyone seen "Dune"? I see it's available for streaming and might rent it. It's up for an Academy Award for best picture.
"Blink Twice" is a thriller movie starring A lister Channing Tatum as a billionaire who owns a private island. He brings a cocktail waitress that was serving him at one of his fundraisers to join him for a dream vacation. Things are what they seem and soon she is struggling for his life.
The film also stars some B list actors like Haley Joel Osmet, Christian Slater and Geena Davis. It's lead by British Actress Naomi Ackie was done very well.
Overall, the film held my attention and I loved the twists and turns and the ending. It was odd to me because it started with a "trigger warning" about the violence.
Some of the themes include the power of the rich and control of men over women.
The director is Zoe Kravitz, the daughter of rockstar Lenny and at won time was engaged to Tatum but they split up this year.
My Old *** tells the story of a young woman meeting her older self while she was hallucinated and the lessons she learns about life and love along the way.
Really good movie with some good messaging, although a bit corny.

Conclave tells the old story: pope dies, the drama around selecting a new pope.
This one is getting really good reviews and my friend wanted to see it so I went. It indeed is very well done, great cast, good acting, great soundtrack and cinematography and sets. Unexpected twist at the end. But still an unoriginal concept but one with good execution.
I just finished watching The Perfect Couple on Netflix.
It was a fun and well acted murder mystery with Nicole Kidman and Liev Schrieber starring as the perfect couple.
Emilia Pérez is a very interesting Netflix movie, in that it's a movie, a crime story, love story, and social commentary movie. It's really unique and the acting is really good. The quartet of actresses won at Cannes, one of the actresses included a Spanish trans woman who made history as the first out trans woman to win at Cannes. There's some buzz she could be the first out trans woman to get an Oscar nomination. I'm not sure it's Oscar worthy but very good.
The Piano Lesson is a Netflix movie revolving around an African American family in the post depression years and an heirloom piano that was carved with the depictions of their slave ancestors just a couple of generations prior.
It's a powerful movie delivered by a stellar ensemble cast.

The Hunger is Netflix movie about a young cook struggling to make it at her family's noodle stand that enters the world of an elite chef that cooks for the wealthy. The movie highlights class, social status, family values and what one has to compromise to find success in the world and whether or not it's worth it to make those sacrifices.
Really good movie. It's a Thai movie that is part of Netflix's hopes of expanding its market in Asia where their service is growing, while it's more or less peaked here.

I read a review of this one (by Tom Gliatto) in PEOPLE magazine. The last paragraph made me give a little laugh....like 'hah!' The second time I read it, it made me smile even more because the more I thought about it, the more I realized that the last sentence was quite clever. I wanted to send it for you to look at and see what you thought !

"One complaint: For a musical, the songs are too brief, too small, to convey much. Imagine if West Side Story were hummed."

So, I started humming some of the songs from WSS and although I haven't seen Emilia Perez, that one sentence REALLY does bring home, what he was talking about. Try humming "Dear Officer Krupke", or "There's a Place For Us" or "I Feel Pretty".
It loses a LOT in the humming! 🙃
What can I say-----sometimes I am easily amused!

I didn't notice that the musical numbers were too short. There were some good musical numbers but it was mostly a drama in my opinion.

"The Fall Guy" is a fun action-comedy-romance movie that stars superstar Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt. He plays a Hollywood stuntman that gets involved in some shady stuff. It had a lot of action scenes and obviously had a big budget, which apparently it did not recoup. Overall for what it accomplished what it set out to do and I enjoyed it.
There was a TV series in the 80's called "The Fall Guy" about stunt actors staring Lee Majors and he makes a cameo appearance at the end of the movie, which was cool.
