The Movie and TV Thread

Updated:   Published

I started a thread here that I meant to put somewhere else,  and I erased it.  So what to discuss in the coffee lounge?

Have you seen any good movies lately?

Last movie I saw was "The Last Duel". Pretty good.

Anyone seen "Dune"?  I see it's available for streaming and might rent it.  It's up for an Academy Award for best picture.

"Pearl" is an indie movie put out by A24 that's been on my radar for a while.  It came out in 2022 and the lead actress was nominated for a Spirit Award (the Indie Film industries academy award type awards) for best Lead Performance.  When it came out on Netflix recently I put it in my cue.

I didn't realize it was a prequel to a slasher movie called "X" that got good reviews a couple of years prior which I haven't seen.

This movie is indeed a psychological thriller with some slasher elements.  Not a genre I generally enjoy.  But her performance was riveting.  She had a long soliloquy towards the end where the camera just focused on her face while she talked a good while.

It's a good movie, but not a great one and it stands on the lead's performance in my opinion.

I just finished re-watching season 1 of The Terror on Netflix. I had forgotten that I watched it when it first released. What a great sneak peak into the lives of English captains and their crew exploring northern/northeastern part of today's Canada . It shines a bit of light on what being stranded from civilization does to the minds of the crew. I know nothing of this history other than English did explore the north and south as well as the history of canned food leading to lead poisoning, but after watching this it feels like a decent depiction of a shipmates life in this era and job.

Ciaran Hinds is an underrated actor. He's been fantastic in other series that I've seen him in such as Rome and Game of Thrones. There is also a season 2, which I didn't even know existed until now and a season 3 next year.

That looks really good barcode.  Will add it to my list.

Somehow Netflix recommended I watch the series "Godless" and I'm enjoying so far.  Really good acting.

Just watched the movie "The Coup" which is promoted as a "dark comedy" but I really didn't find much comedy.  I do like that it's pretty original in premise.  The acting is really good by its cast of B-listers.

Quote

That perky exclamation point sets the tone for "Coup!,” a story of murder, class struggle, One Percent entitlement and a global pandemic that nonetheless unfolds with all the eager, scrappy energy of an off-Broadway musical, minus most of the songs. The pandemic in question is not the one you're thinking of — Austin Stark and Joseph Schuman's puckish comic thriller unfolds against the dire backdrop of the 1918 Spanish Flu — but it also sort of is, as its study of wealthy exceptionalism in a time of national crisis is clearly intended to chime with more recent memories of regimented distancing and mixed safety messages from on high.

Cabrini is a good movie about a nun from Italy that immigrates to America and finds an America in the late 1800's where Italian immigrants are discriminated against and rats live better than Italian orphans.  The acting by the lead is really good.

It's a true story

It's obviously a big budget movie as the production sets, costumes and cinematography  is excellent.

Rebel Ridge is a Netflix crime-drama-thriller that is getting really good reviews, about a corrupt small town and what happens when they meet their match.  It's very well done and the ending will keep you on the edge of your seat.

I really wasn't interested in "His Three Daughters" because it seems a tired worn out premise:  family gathers around dying relative and dirty laundry is aired.  Still it was getting such good reviews I decided to watch it.  Yes, it is a bit cliche but the strength of this film that made it stand out was the performances of the ensemble cast of actresses playing the three daughters and a really good script.

I would say it's an excellent movie.  It's on Netflix.

I've been a bit distracted from movie watching by losing power during Helene for three days, but also watching things like "The Rings of Power" on Amazon Prime.  Verdict is still out for that one and "Chef's Table" the Netflix series that periodically releases new episodes.  Its features a Chef and a theme.  This one caught my eye because the theme was "noodles" and noodles, particularly Asian style are my crack and I'm lucky to be able to eat carbs and not gain weight.

I was particularly happy to see the four episodes in this series featured two Asian chefs, one Chinese and one Cambodian.  I've actually been to Cambodia but wasn't as familiar with their noodle cuisine as I am Chinese (which I actually make often).

I watched the limited series The Fall of the House of Usher this week.  I'm a fan of Poe's work so I jumped in.  It wasn't what I thought it was going to be but it was quite a story which had so much reference to Poe characters and plots it was impossible to resist.

This series is violent and gory but the acting is pretty good as they tell an old old tale about choosing wisely.  I may not have watched this had I watched the Trailer first.

I'll add "The Fall of the House of Usher" to my watchlist.

"Woman of the Hour" is a Netflix movie that is based on the true story of a serial killer who makes an appearance on the 70's show "The Dating Game".

It kind of jumped around in time, but ultimately was a really good movie as it came together.  The focus was on the killer but there also were some themes of women not being taken seriously and misogyny.

I really enjoyed this movie.

Strange Darling is getting some mixed reviews but overall critics are liking it giving it a whopping 95% on Rotten Tomatoes (a good indication it's a movie I will like).

It's about the final days of a female serial killer's final 24 hours.

I really liked it myself.  I loved the twists and turns and final ending.  It's told in chapters but not told in chronological order and jumps around but answers your questions along the way.   While that normally is irritating, I found it effective.

The lead actress does a very good job.
