I started a thread here that I meant to put somewhere else, and I erased it. So what to discuss in the coffee lounge?
Have you seen any good movies lately?
Last movie I saw was "The Last Duel". Pretty good.
Anyone seen "Dune"? I see it's available for streaming and might rent it. It's up for an Academy Award for best picture.
The Tourist is a two season BBC series with six episodes each on Netflix. It takes are well worn story about a man that wakes up from a head injury with amnesia and then struggles to put the pieces together. That being said it's extremely well done with a lot of twists and turns. I really enjoyed it.
There apparently is no plans for a season 3 but it's not entirely ruled out.
Netflix British show Adolescence has a near perfect 99% on Rotten Tomatoes from the critics but the audience score is lower in the 70s. But word of mouth has made it a worldwide hit and much talked about, particularly in the UK.
It is a four-part series that is basically four scenes each an hour long. The first scene was very fast paced but the last two in the series was quite slow. The acting particularly by the father is really good. It centers around a 13 year old accused of murdering a teenage girl with a knife. I liked it well enough.
Geostorm is a big budget disaster movie that is on Netflix. The film is from 2017 but just hit Netflix where it made the top 10 which is why I clicked it on while I was cooking yesterday and finished today.
I have since found it got a dismal 18% on Rotten Tomatoes. But I liked it for what it was, some mind candy with a hero and a heroic ending.
I'm Still Here is a Brazilian movie that is a true story about the wife and mother whose husband disappeared during the dictatorship there in 1971. She later became a lawyer and an activist for indigenous people's. Her son wrote an autobiography which was adapted to this movie.
The movie was widely acclaimed and won the Academy Award for best foreign language picture. It was also nominated for in the Best Picture category. The lead actress gave a brilliant and subtle performance that won her a Golden Globe, as well as an Academy Award nomination.
I found the movie engaging and thought provoking.
Spa Night was on a recent NYT list of the 50 best movies on Netflix and I thought I would watch it even though it came out in 2016. (The writer is making the much publicized remake of "The Wedding Banquet" this year). It has an excellent 96% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
It deals with several topics of a young Korean American man living with his financially struggling parents, their expectations of his and his burgeoning sexuality when he stumbles. I found it very slow and somewhat boring.
