The Movie and TV Thread

Updated:   Published

I started a thread here that I meant to put somewhere else,  and I erased it.  So what to discuss in the coffee lounge?

Have you seen any good movies lately?

Last movie I saw was "The Last Duel". Pretty good.

Anyone seen "Dune"?  I see it's available for streaming and might rent it.  It's up for an Academy Award for best picture.

I agree.  He's one of the finest actors and really digs deep to get into his roles.  Have you seen "Beau is Afraid".  I have it in my cue, but it's a rental.  "Napoleon" came out and I missed it in the theaters.  It's an Apple Movie and I no longer have my free subscription to Apple.

I hear you, I don't have Apple anything.

This is a TV series, but definitely recommend Masters of the Air which is currently airing and on episode 4 if anyone enjoys the military genre. I recommend watching Band of Brothers and The Pacific first as both give different views and feels of war. I will say MoA is a bit slow right now, but I'm expecting to ramp up on action and stuff.

That's one of my biggest gripes these days.  I only have Netflix and Amazon Prime.  No cable.  That means I miss out on some good Apple, Disney or Paramount movies.  At least in the old days you could get just about any new release at Blockbusters.  LOL

I too am a big fan of Phoenix. I won't say Napoleon was that great or near his greatest act, but still good nonetheless.

We haven't had cable for years. We also pay for paramount, Hulu and Disney. We miss blockbuster.  The library is a good source for some movies.

Kanopy is a great source for movies. We watch the full number we can during the month. Also Hoopla.  These are from our library system. I also read books from 'Libby".

"The Greatest Night in Pop" is a Netflix Documentary that details the making of the iconic charity single "We Are the World".

At the time it was a well documented story and captivated the music world but that was 1985, so it was good to revisit a time when the superstars of music at the time came together.

It's generated good reviews and was a fun watch since I enthralled with it at the time as a youngster.  It interviews the now much older Lionel Ritchie who was one of the writers and producers of the record, Huey Lewis, Cyndi Lauper and Sheila E.  One relavation unknown to me was the Sheila E. stated she felt she was invited only to lure Prince whom she was close to at the time.  Prince declined to come for various reasons (one being he didn't like to work with other people and is a control freak).

Of note, Tina Turner became the 10th singer in the lineup to have passed away.

I watched this too.

At the time, being a teenager didn't really give much thought to it.  A bunch of famous singers doing a song together...big deal.

I've come to appreciate it more since then.  But, then after I watched this....wow

Barb and Star Go To Vista Del Mar is a comedy and about two middle aged best friends who get laid off from their jobs and decide to vacation in Florida.  From there the get involved with some outrageous plot where murderous mosquitoes were going to be let loose on the town.

It really is a good laugh out loud farce and enjoyable.  Its release was delayed because of covid and didn't do well at the box office, but apparently did well in streaming rentals.  I never got around to seeing it but it was on sale at Amazon Prime for $1.99 rent and I watched it.  It's on Hulu too I believe.

I need a good comedy, thanks.  I'm at the end of my mobile data and my "month" hasn't switched yet so it will go on the list.  It looks like I'm going to use my data quickly.  Again. LOL

"Marmalade" is a newly released indie movie that is also available to rent on VUDU or Amazon.  It's tells the tale of how a man was lured into robbing a bank by the love of his life.   I really enjoyed it.  It holds your attention, has its tense moments, and the script is totally flipped at the end.

I will put this on my list.  I enjoy unexpected endings.  I'm currently consumed with the Georgia court hearings about the Fanni Willis romantic relationship.

Acclaimed actor Nicolas Cage is having somewhat of a renaissance in his career in Indie movies.  Somewhere I think in this thread I reviewed his critically acclaimed movie "Pig".  He also is receiving praise for his latest movie "Dream Scenario" which is about a man that infiltrates thousands of people's dreams and the aftermath effects on his life and those around him.  It has its comedic elements, but is also a commentary on some people's obsession with viral fame.  It's a really good movie.
