I started a thread here that I meant to put somewhere else, and I erased it. So what to discuss in the coffee lounge?
Have you seen any good movies lately?
Last movie I saw was "The Last Duel". Pretty good.
Anyone seen "Dune"? I see it's available for streaming and might rent it. It's up for an Academy Award for best picture.
Thanks TMB. That looks like a good series.
I like all kinds of films, mostly dramas but some comedies, but less so horror, action and sci-fi but I do like those movies as well. I agree about dubbing taking away somewhat from a non-English language film.
Speaking of dubbing. "Golden Voices" is an Israeli movie in Russian about a couple that dubbed movies into Russian and emigrated to Israel after the collapse of the Soviet Union and how they tried to start again and establish themselves. The 62 year old female protagonist stumbles across a job as worker doing phone sex (when there was such a thing prior to the internet).
It's included in Amazon Prime membership.
I liked it. It was a unique plot and had some heart to it. It was not dubbed.
"The Holdovers" is a critical darling, getting lots of nominations this awards season. Lead veteran actor Paul Giamatti recently won the Critics Choice Award for lead actor and has an Oscar nomination for this movie. Supporting Actress Da"vine Joy Randolph is winning major awards this season as well. She's nominated for the Oscar and won the Golden Globe and Critics Choice Award for supporting actress. It also has a Best Picture Nomination.
Accolades aside it is a good story about three people each dealing with inner Demonds, grief and loss. I really enjoyed it.
"The Greatest Night in Pop" is a Netflix Documentary that details the making of the iconic charity single "We Are the World".
At the time it was a well documented story and captivated the music world but that was 1985, so it was good to revisit a time when the superstars of music at the time came together.
It's generated good reviews and was a fun watch since I enthralled with it at the time as a youngster. It interviews the now much older Lionel Ritchie who was one of the writers and producers of the record, Huey Lewis, Cyndi Lauper and Sheila E. One relavation unknown to me was the Sheila E. stated she felt she was invited only to lure Prince whom she was close to at the time. Prince declined to come for various reasons (one being he didn't like to work with other people and is a control freak).
Of note, Tina Turner became the 10th singer in the lineup to have passed away.

We enjoyed the documentary "We are the world" also. Boy, could Michael Jackson hit a pure note. Brought back a lot of memories of that time. I always liked Huey Lewis and Steve Perry singing. Cindy too. Too bad His Highness Prince decided not to attend but he would not have improved it.
Can I add it showed many skilled, talented, educated artists with great egos working together...something we do not see on all threads on AN. (I am guilty!)
I saw a movie in my cue at Netflix and wanting to watch some mind candy, I gave it a watch. Based on a Japanese comic (or manga) "Knights of the Zodiac" was a box office flop and a critical failure. Not sure how it wound up in my cue, maybe by accident or by suggestion.
It definitely is something a movie teenage boys and Gen Z geek guys would be into. It had all the cliches such as ninja style fight scenes, slow motion action and special effects. I didn't hate it but mostly it was a dud but good mind candy. It sets us up for a sequel but given its bad reception not sure it's going to get made.
Getting make to more adult movies I like, I watched "C'mon C'mon" a 2021 indie movie shot in black and white staring Joaquin Phoenix as an uncle who has take care of his eccentric nephew while his sister is helping her mentally ill husband. It explores the relationship between the uncle and nephew, but also the uncle with himself as he, as his job, interviews teens and children about their lives, hopes and fears. It's a really good movie that held my attention and had me thinking without being too overly melodramatic.
It's on Amazon Prime (which now has limited ads if you don't pay extra) for their non-rental content.

I agree. He's one of the finest actors and really digs deep to get into his roles. Have you seen "Beau is Afraid". I have it in my cue, but it's a rental. "Napoleon" came out and I missed it in the theaters. It's an Apple Movie and I no longer have my free subscription to Apple.

NEB regularly watches the films you review and largely enjoys the content. I'm more of a sci-fi/action kind of person. I like foreign films. Sometimes the dubbing is really bad so I listen to rather than watch face to face scenes.
I recently watched a limited series on Netflix called Bodies. It's a time travel murder mystery. 4 different detectives in 4 different times all encounter the same dead body in the same place and investigate the same crime. It was fun and kept me interested.
