Just a bit ago the top three threads involved:
1.I have a DWI. Can I be a nurse?
2.I am stupid. Can I be a nurse?
3.If it takes me five times to pass NCLEX, Can I be nurse.
Not much left to add. Says it all.
Not related to this site, but something that irked me a few years ago.
When I decided that I was going to go back to college and start on the path to becoming a nurse, I made some changes in my life. I wrote up a budget and saved up some money for a year, I sold some things, I put some hobbies on the back burner, I stripped down some aspects of my life and made some sacrifices so that I would have the time and money to do this. I even (begrudgingly) took out a student loan. This is serious **** and it has real-life requirements. My tax return this year is all going into my 14 year old Ford Ranger to help it limp along to 250K miles or my first career job, whichever comes last...
Right around the same time I enrolled, a fellow classmate from high school friended me on Facebook. Shortly after, she spammed her friend list for donations to help her pay her way back to college so that she could become a nurse. She claimed it was her lifelong DREAAAAAMb and she can't do it because of massive debt and bad credit. (Never mind that she graduated from OSU in 2004 with a bachelors in Biology, and also in 1997 with a bachelors in Psychology). Meanwhile, in Facebook pics she and her husband (he works, she doesn't, they have no kids) have hundreds of pics of exotic vacations, renovations to their 3,000 sqft McMansion and two or more late model high end automobiles (think BMW 5-series and Lexus SUV)
I unfriended her, and her response was two sentences: 1) why did you do that 2) will you donate towards my DREAMMMB?
So I threw in a block for good measure. Seems like she got what she wanted though. She's scheduled to graduate this year and seems to have a hospital job lined up already.

Oh man, why didn't I think of that??? Then I wouldn't be getting ready to pay back all $20K of my loans! Sheesh! Just think, my 3 kids and I could have avoided food stamps and cash aid and my mom wouldn't have been paying both my car payment and insurance for the last 3 years.... Must be nice to have "friends" like that
My favorite is the
"I failed nursing school (or failed NCLEX x number of times or graduated 3 years ago but haven't found a job) but I'm going back to try a 5th time, Jesus/Thor/God/Ra the Sun God loves me and always gets me though, there's a reason for everything and I'm blessed so he'll do it all for me. I'm such a special snowflake that dieties take my tests, do my homework, get jobs for me, I don't have to study or work hard because my diety just waves a magic want and makes it happen for people who have faith."

And when God closes one door, he opens another!
"
and when god closes one door, he opens another!"
and the people who believe that don't realize that when you fail the pre-reqs or the nclex multiple times, the only other door that's opening is to fast food or retail... these deludinoids still think they're destined for something wonderful and well paid, because they're such special, brilliant people!

omg..."deludinoids." that is my favorite new word!
and yes, they really are "special snowflakes."
Would have loved to meet her. A realist I guess.
She was a trip. She and her siblings (my great-aunts and uncles) had a very dry sense of humor. She had the good fortune of marrying someone who had the same wit; trips to their house could be very interesting. I remember when I was a kid my great-uncle tried to convince me it had "rained hop-toads in Shamokin."
Your thread didn't really evoke the gag reflex -- and in any case your username ought to give you a pass for at least two really sappy rainbow flatulence and unicorn posts . . . as far as this crusty old bat is concerned anyway -- :)It's ok to be cynical. :) I didn't see any of those other threads, so I started that one. I wouldn't say that the site as a whole is overly negative as much as it is "realistic". This realism is something I actually appreciate. Hearing the voices from the new and seasoned nurses in the trenches has given me a good perspective of what to expect and what it takes to become and be a good and competent nurse.

LOL! I don't know what it means but that is so damn funny I'm going to use it anyway just to see the puzzled looks on people's faces!

As a home health nurse, this is one of my favorites:
I'm a new grad who has been offered a position as a DON ofa home health care agency. This is a new start up and they know I don't have much experience, but they really believe in me and say that they will mentor me. I really think that I can make this work and the hours are wonderful. What advice do you have for me?
My advice? RUN! Any agency that will hire a DON without previous home health experience, nevermind basic nursing experience, does not have faith in you--they want someone who won't recognize fraud when they see it!
