Ugh. The kids have their mile run today. I have had literally 25 kids in here, trying to get me to write them passes for gym. I don't write passes unless they have a note from home with a clear reason why they can't participate. The students and parents are all aware of this policy, and it isn't new.
Also, I'm 38, out of shape, and tired. I can run a mile, so can they. They can go as slowly as they'd like, they aren't graded on speed. They just have to do it.
Also, the parents that write notes like "Please excuse my baby from gym today, he has travel hockey tonight and we need him to save his energy..." Ugh!

I hate that!. The PE teachers think EVERYONE should be as conditioned as well as our varsity athletes are. In an ideal world we ALL would be well conditioned. Not gonna happen.

BWAHAHA. Sorry.
I'm waiting for the aftermath story - the chronically deconditioned "I can't breathe"....

i just chuckle, especially if it's from one my 8th graders. In the HS they have a very long PE period every day so they run a mile every day. They think i'm joking when i tell them this. When they come to visit or pick up siblings after they graduate from me i always hear about how they thought i was joking or exaggerating.
What happened to square dancing and badminton? Are those no longer acceptable for PE?

How about a PE teacher piecing together that a student who is not athletic who is out of breath after running does NOT require medical attention? :eyeroll:

I was just talking to my husband the other day about square dancing and how I wonder why that of all things is something we did so much in gym class. We have two very young gym teachers at my school and I wonder if they teach it, too, like if it's state-required in any way. It's funny to think about.
I was a bookworm, NOT a runner, in elementary and middle school. I recall one mile that I "ran" in 20+ minutes and I still got an A for the class. The ones puking and having trouble were the ones with the "best" times. I had no regrets

Agreed. I also get "out of breath" because having them sit and catch their breath in the gym is crazy talk. They know who my asthmatic kids are and I obviously don't mind them, but I'm talking about my "i don't wanna do this" 5th graders who are now putting on a performance in my office trying to get out of their next class.
We do badminton here.

"I feel hot" ummm, duh! You just ran a mile, you're sweaty, it's normal, why are you in my office?!

Imagine during out PACER test. That is the worse time for me. I get so many kids crying, I CAN'T BREATHE (Yet you can talk to me and talk to you friend) and MY HEART IS BEATING SO FAST (You just ran a lot.)
