The election 2024 Thread

I traditionally have a thread heading to the election, here we go.

Get out the popcorn for this one.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis is expected to formally announce next week he is running for president in 2024, NBC News reported Thursday, citing two sources familiar with the matter.

The governor's official entry into the Republican primary field will put him head-to-head with former President Donald Trump, the party's current frontrunner for the nomination. Trump has already spent months treating DeSantis as his primary campaign rival, thrashing him with torrents of criticism over his gubernatorial record, his political skills and his personality.

Mitch McConnell stepping down in November '24 from Senate GOP leadership, will finish out term ending Jan. 2027

AP news

McConnell will step down as the Senate Republican leader in November after a record run in the job

As much as it's time for him to go, the Senate is going to lose all of his institutional knowledge because most of the Republicans don't seem interested in learning what he knows.  This is very scary knowing that the vicious monkeys will have no leader.

I loathed McConnell.  But as some might remember, and I'll say it again, he was at the top of his game and very good at what he did.  He blocked Obama's Supreme Court nominee and fast tracked Trump's for instance.

Personally, I'm not worried about them not having a leader.  There's plenty of experience.  Cornyn from Texas has already put his hat in the ring and has plenty of experience.  What worries me is he endorsed Donald Trump President.  Like when Trump was President, should he get a 2nd Term, I'm concerned there's no leadership that will cross him, or in fact will support him and not challenge him on his rhetoric and lies.

Correct.  The despot who isn't particularly fond of the elements of a healthy democracy has captured the leadership of both houses of congress and a significant percentage of the judicial branch.  With tens of millions of cheering cult members showing support, these powerful people will bend our institutions to the will of the mad king.

Keep watching.

Exactly.  Monkeys with flamethrowers.  Just because someone has experience doesn't make him a practical choice but they will choose that person anyway.  McConnell used to be a Democrat.  I don't know what turned him but he was become extremely wealthy insulating himself from the regular folk in Kentucky.

Bribing senators with cars is bad.

Bribing Supreme Court justices with motor homes is fine.

Former Dodgers baseball star Steve Garvey age 74 - Republican is tied in polls with CA Rep. Adam Schiff age 63 -Democrat to replace Senator Feinstein's seat. Reo. Katie Porter slipped to 3rd post running neck to neck with Garvey. Rep. Barbara Lee continually tailing in polls.

I thought Katie Porters youthful poignant firebrand questioning during House hearings and news show appearances would  appeal to younger voters and have her in tie with Schiff.

She has been a fiery advocate for coming sense and regular working people.  We need people like her in congress.

3/4/2024:  Supreme Court unanimously rules to keep Trump on Colorado ballot

Quote

The court was unanimous on the idea that Trump could not be unilaterally removed from the ballot.

But the justices were divided about how broadly the decision would sweep. A 5-4 majority said that no state could dump a federal candidate off any ballot – but four justices asserted that the court should have limited its opinion.

A five-justice majority – Chief Justice John Roberts and Justices Clarence Thomas, Samuel Alito, Neil Gorsuch and Brett Kavanaugh – wrote that states may not remove any federal officer from the ballot, especially the president, without Congress first passing legislation.

"We conclude that States may disqualify persons holding or attempting to hold state office. But States have no power under the Constitution to enforce Section 3 with respect to federal offices, especially the Presidency,” the opinion states...

Four of the justices disagreed on the scope of the decision.

With its opinion, the majority, "shuts the door on other potential means of federal enforcement,” Justices Sonia Sotomayor, Elena Kagan and Ketanji Brown Jackson wrote in a concurring opinion. "We cannot join an opinion that decides momentous and difficult issues unnecessarily.”

Justice Amy Coney Barrett, writing alone in a concurring opinion, said that the case "does not require us to address the complicated question whether federal legislation is the exclusive vehicle through which Section 3 can be enforced.”

Off to read the SCOTUS opinion.

In other words, it doesn't matter if a fellow is found to have been engaged in insurrection, the congress that also participated in the insurrection gets to decide who is disqualified.
