I traditionally have a thread heading to the election, here we go.
Get out the popcorn for this one.
QuoteFlorida Gov. Ron DeSantis is expected to formally announce next week he is running for president in 2024, NBC News reported Thursday, citing two sources familiar with the matter.
The governor's official entry into the Republican primary field will put him head-to-head with former President Donald Trump, the party's current frontrunner for the nomination. Trump has already spent months treating DeSantis as his primary campaign rival, thrashing him with torrents of criticism over his gubernatorial record, his political skills and his personality.

Can't agree. He's been making headlines for a long time. His name has been talked about as a candidate for along time. He has some name recognition.
People know who he is, in some circles not in a good way. Republicans are favoring Trump right now, but more than anyone they are willing to give him some thought, especially given how he transformed Florida in ways they like. It remains to be seen how he will do against Trump.

Yes, to people who pay attention to politics his name is well-known. For the average person who doesn't pay attention until election season, I don't think that he is. Especially the farther west you get.
I do agree with your assessment that DeSantis's biggest problem is indeed Trump, and not his agenda.

I was going to add that caveat. He's frequently on the national news, so of you don't pay attention to news on places like CNN or Fox you don't give him much thought.
Way west in California and Washington state they've heard of him. Newsome talks of him. I have a friend that in Minnesota that makes fun of him.
But for the average person they don't care about national events or the election yet. Heck some people couldn't point out Florida on a map.
As a Washingtonian, I don't think DeSantis has much to offer. Our state is close to 50/50 between progressives and conservatives. Progressives are put off with the anti-woke, anti-reproductive choice stuff. The conservatives are ranchers and farmers who depend on migrant labor. Then again, we are used to not being a factor in presidential politics. Candidates only visit to gather donations.
Chris Sununu is hinting at running. To me, his one of the few Republicans with any likability.
Abortion and the 2nd Amendment have been issues since I've been voting. Perhaps the rescindong of Roe v Wade will be on people's minds, as will mass murders. Democrats own guns. Also a Democrat President was in place when Roe v wade was rescinded and stood by helplessly while Republican states stripped rights.
If DeSantis somehow gets the nomination his far right record will be plain and insight and won't be attractive to Independents for sure.
But still we love in a country where Trump won.
What's will be most on people's minds might be bread abd butter issues. The crash of 2008 got a relatively unknown Obama in. Inflation, gas prices, the stock market will factor in 2024, as well as age. We're only talking about guns and abortion because the low unemployment rate and inflation has settled down.

That must be what the thinking is. I think that the GOP have been surprised by the thinking of American voters on these topics in some recent elections.
So DeSantis is in. He had a few glitches in his unconventional announcement via Twitter, but stuff happens.
DeSantis being mocked for his campaign announcement via Twitter.
Quote"Glitchy. Tech issues. Uncomfortable silences. A complete failure to launch. And that's just the candidate!” a spokesperson for the Trump campaign sent out to reporters.

Maybe firing the tech engineers wasn't a reflection of Musk's business genius. In other news, Musk announced that DeSantis candidacy the day before... stealing what spotlight DeSantis hoped to focus on himself.
Christie and Pence will get in the race.

Oh, the irony of a republican member of the House wanting to remove a Democrat from Congress because of the Durham report. Seriously.
You can't make this up.
