If you caught The View yesterday, you saw Joy Behar ask of Miss Colorado (Miss America contestant) and nurse, "Why does she have a doctor's stethoscope around her neck?"
Our friends at Gomer Blog couldn't resist.
Littmann to Produce Separate Doctor and Nurse Stethoscopes Thanks to The View†| GomerBlog
I think I'll order one custom-made with assless chaps. :)
I have to admit, I have enjoyed watching the "Show me your Stethoscope" group. We have an amazingly diverse and passionate profession.
Our hospital is doing one this morning. Gonna grab a doc from morning rounds (the one who usually has to borrow a nurse's stethoscope because he never has one). I heard someone is working on a rap/poem. We'll see.
It should be fun. This has actually turned out to be a good platform to show what nurses do.
Maybe we should sorta thank those "cackling hens".
I think they should spend ONE WEEK in nursing school (or working as a bedside nurse for that matter) and then maybe they'll get an accurate depiction of what nurses actually do. Maybe then they'll be able to come up with a halfway decent apology.
Not even nursing students get an idea of what nursing is like in nursing school. lol
I have to admit, I have enjoyed watching the "Show me your Stethoscope" group. We have an amazingly diverse and passionate profession.
I have LOVED that group. All of the stories, all of the nurse pride, all of the things that make us all so unique but bind us together, filling my fb newsfeed. I can't get enough of it!
Here's my Washington Post response to The View:
(ie) "Johnson, valedictorian of her nursing school class and the pageant's second runner-up, is a pianist, too. But, rather than take the safe route with a traditional talent, she used her moment in the national spotlight to warmly pay tribute to her profession. She also demonstrated better than any other contestant that night that she is an excellent spokeswoman, well equipped to handle the ambassadorial role of Miss America."
and
"It takes a heck of a lot more talent to earn the scrubs and stethoscope than it does to mock a hero."
So, the initial blunder on Monday made me think Michelle wasn't really that offensive, she just didn't like the performance. I felt like that was what she was criticizing, not the nurse herself. I was way annoyed with Joy for her "doctor's stethoscope" comment because it made it sound like she felt we were too stupid to use one. So, annoyed by Joy, not so annoyed with Michelle.
Then their response to the backlash made me do a whole 180. No one apologized, but Joy did seem humble in her admission of ignorance. Michelle was just a jerk. Plain and simple. When you've angered a person (or population), you don't begin conflict resolution by saying, "you weren't listening". Take responsibility for what you said, explain what you meant. Heck, maybe actually apologize. She just went on the offensive and took the rest of the table with her.
If they REALLY want to gain ratings, I do think they should volunteer a couple of days/shifts at the bedside. Maybe an ICU day shift, and a stepdown night shift (because we all know those LOL ninjas are full of entertainment at night). Way too much red tape for that to happen, I'm sure.

It is sad that Joy Behar sat on LIVE TV and stated that she didn't really pay much attention to Miss Colorado's performance (but Joy sure had a lot to say about that performance) then goes on to BERATE nurses for NOT UNDERSTANDING HER blah blah blah.?? Joy, take the challenge.... do 12 hours in OUR SHOES!!! Bet you can't do it!!
And the sad fact is... IF one of those ladies were to end up in the ER today.... they would be treated with care and kindness. But where were their kindness in their remarks???
