Textbooks editions.. the infamous problem.

Published

What do you think? Go with the older ed or stick to the newest?

This seems to be a bigger problem with fall semester. I'm looking at 700+ if I buy all new from campus.

Here are the books with muptiple editions in question..

General Chemistry .. Raymond Chang

Essentials of Sociology: a down to earth approach

Living with Art

Infants, children, & adolescents.

Human AP... tortora (I'm using the one with the heart on the cover but there is an even newer one..)

I need to buy today!

Any input????

buy new - especially gems like tortora mircobiology

I usually buy the newer edition. This semester I tried buying the old edition for my two classes (microbiology and physics), and I ended up having to buy the new one anyway for my physics class, but the microbiology book, I'm getting by with since my professor doesn't use it so much and he told us we could get any book as long as we have something.

When I'm in the nursing program, I plan on buying the newer editions. I don't want to be missing any information and get lost and confused.

half.com from ebay is a good choice, better world books sells there and on their own site (their own site to us = $00.00 for shipping. for new i stick to amazon. you can get good deals on ebay, but check out your shippers postage and handling before you bid. the half site from ebay has fixed shipping depending on whether the book is a paperback or hardback.

I'll second the suggestion to use half.com for textbooks. I'm finding brand new books at 50% off the bookstore price.

I have done both. I got the older ed of my CNA textbook w/the current ed workbook. It was not a problem. As for sciences, I buy used/up to date books online. It is a rare thing for me to pay my college bookstores prices on texts. I also try to speak with the grad class and see if I can snag their books cheap. I have found there is always one student who could care less about their books. My previous degree program books were around $1000 for the 2 yrs.. I got mine for $200...

In the end it is up to your study habits... Does it bother you to have to find page numbers for a certain topic? Do you hate highlighting from others? Does the cover need to be "perfect"? If any of this bothers you, bite the bullet and buy new/online. :)

If you have the ISBN number, I like going to www.bookfinder4u.com. It gives you several sites to purchase the newest editions for half the price. I love www.alibris.com for finding books. Having the ISBN number is the key. Also go to your local craigslist. A student was selling her books and I got my nutrition, organic chem and medical terminology/math books, a total of five, for only $150! Make sure on craigslist that they list the course number and the college, because I almost bought the wrong statistics book a couple of days ago. If you know what fall courses you are going to have, make sure to order the books now, sometimes shipping can take forever!

Don't forget Amazon, used....I picked up my biology book for $5 used. It was $75 brand new and the school bookstore was selling it for $60 used!! LOL I go there first now for every book!
