Testing out of A&P

Hi there, I am really looking for some advice here. I got accepted into a Nursing program for this fall, but today I got a call saying that I need to take A&P before I can enter the program in the fall. If not, then I can't start until fall of 2014 :drowning:. This is really bumming me out. I was wondering if anyone knew of any tests I could take to "test out" of A&P. I wouldn't mind taking the classes later, I just want to be able to get into my nursing classes and clinicals this fall! Any help would be appreciated! Thanks guys!

*** Many, many schools do not require A&P for accepence into the nursing program. Not all scholl have pre-req's. Here in Wisconsin the public technical college nursing programs do not require any college class pre-reqs. All the usual classes, like A&P, are part of the program and taked along with nursing classes.

*** Wow, sorry for the spelling. Even worse than usual for me. I was being distracted while writing.

Really? What credible absn programs would that be? Because the one I'm in and every one I looked at had a two semester requirement. I can't imagine a single reputable program allowing that.

At my school we only take one anatomy class, and you do not have to complete it until the first semester of the nursing program. My school is credible, and combines your two classes of a&p into one class. Not all schools are the same, and the same information is covered, so you cant just think that one is better than the others.

OP, I don't think that there is a way to test out of A&P if you have not taken the class already. It would at least take you your full summer of studying it non-stop to understand it and even then there is a chance that you will not understand it in depth enough for your nursing courses. A&P is the foundation for your nursing courses, if you don't get a good foundation then it will be very difficult for you.

If you were unsure about this, then you need to check with your school and go over their curriculum carefully. In nursing, one thing builds from another. For instance, my school required A&P 1&2 with a lab (each) prior to starting any nursing class. They also required chemistry first. They were very particular that you took the classes from a school they approved of. You don't want to take it, then find out your school wouldn't accept it.

You are not doing yourself any favors by "testing out" unless of course you have a really solid foundation baased on previously taking and passing successfully.....but I suspect as they are not accepting a transfer of credit, this is not the case.

As other posters have said, it is the basis of so much of what we do in nursing.

Take the class, wotk hard, do well and it will serve you well down the road.

Apparently I was not precise enough about what is going on.

1. I got accepted into the program. It's usually a 4 year program, but I have finished almost all of the first two years of the program when I was studying Biology at another school.

2. I am not trying to really "test out" of the class. I really mean I would like to skip it for now, or take it with my other nursing courses. I KNOW that I need it and I am not trying to just bypass classes.

3. The reason I want to do this is because I will have to wait another year and a half to start the nursing classes and have no other classes (other than A&P) to take in the meantime.

4. The school was stated you didn't need to have any pre-reqs done before applying to the program.

I wasn't looking for people to tell me that I am trying to get out of something that I need. I know I need it guys. I have been studying A&P for MONTHS just to prepare myself for classes ( I have 3 A&P textbooks).

Anyway, thanks for the advice everyone.

What kind of nursing program are you accepted into LPN or RN because the A&P part 1 and 2 are always required before acceptance or so I thought. Ask the school if you can take the classes in addition to your nursing core studies.

For the above poster, if you read my response you will see that the a&p requirement is not the case for every school and yes I am in an ADN (RN) program.

Yes, at my school you need to show that you are enrolled in all of your prerequisites and you will have them completed before you start the nursing program. They will then offer you an acceptance "contingent" upon successful completion if these courses.

Sorry for the misinterpretation of that....what I really meant was that was reputable school would not require you to take A&P at all....not that only reputable schools require a 2 semester course. Apologies.

To answer your question OP, try Excelsior...you can "test out" of A&P I&II...

I used excelsior to test out of A&P I&II and microbiology...I needed to boost my GPA, plus they were at least 7-8 years old at the time, and my school recommended Excelsior and accept the credits.

Find out if you can use Excelsior as credit. It's reasonably priced, and you can take the exam within the summer, without having to find out that your local schools courses are closed. It's June, usually the courses are filled up for the summer already, and summer courses have already begun, at least in my area.

Good luck!

So they're accepting you expecting that you will take it while you're in the program? That sounds reasonable.

But wait! You have a year and a half to kill before you start the program in which to take it, and anything else? So you won't have to be taking it while you're in the nursing classes? Do it! Bonus!
