Tarrant County Fall 2011 Applicants

Published

Hello,

I'm applying to the fall nursing program in January. I'm super excited but I still have some unanswered questions. I tried calling the Nursing Dept at the South Campus and left a message but have not heard a response.

I'm trying to find out what teas version they are testing with in the spring for fall entry. I have read tons of threads from TCC for the past few semesters and it is nice to start a new one for nursing hopefuls like me.

I'm taking Micro in the fall and getting a math class knocked out for BSN. Anyway, hope to get some responses.

I applied at WC and TCC. I am in the same boat as dreamer. I am not sure which would be my first choice. I am thinking TCC because I live very close to the Trinity River Campus and near all of the hospitals south of downtown. So it would be convenient and I love the new campus. Plus I live in county so my tuition would be a little less. But on the other hand, I hear great things about WC. The 100% pass rate for the NCLEX exam is the biggest factor that pulls me in that direction. The drive to get there wouldn't be too bad, but I really don't like to commute either. Either way I don't think I will get accepted to both, but I would love to go to either. If I did get accepted to both, I would probably choose TCC. It just makes the most sense and I may have a few friends getting in to their program. I think it would be neat to go through NS with some of the same people I took pre-req classes with. If I don't get in to either school, I will finish up my BSN classes and apply to TWU, UTA, TCC, and WC again until someone lets me in. lol

I was worried about my TEAS scores, but when I called the nursing department and told her my scores she said I should not be concerned, that my scores were fine. I hope she didn't give me false hope. I know in th epast my scores and gpa would have got me in, but as we all know it all depends on the applicant pool. I am so ready to know one way or another.

What is the pass rate for TCC?

Do you wonder if it's not so much the program as the bigger pool of students TCC has as compared to WC? I can't help but wonder that myself.

Dreamer and studentcl,

You guys have to consider the number of students applying to take the NCLEX at both WC and TCC. 40 students, most likely less take the exam, hence the 100% pass rate on the NCLEX. Tarrant County has anywhere between 100-130, maybe less, taking the exam. The difference in the number of students 40 to 100 makes a huge difference in those percentages. Did I even make sense?

For those of you dreading the commute to WC, I have a friend who is on her second semester at WC and she carpools with two other girls to the school and clinical sites. They take turns weekly through out the month. That would help considerably with the cost of gasoline; However, you would have to choose whom you drive with wisely; a dependable, punctual, and a good, safe driver would be a must for me.

I just wrote this completely unaware that you had written it.

Now THAT is funny Loly!

I thought this link might be beneficial to all of us applying here in TX.

I have considered that. I'm sure there is a correlation between class size and pass rate. It still is something that is important to me. I can only imagine how difficult that test will be. The smaller class size is also something that I am sure would benefit me. Both schools have great reputations and I would be ecstatic to be accepted to either. The main problem I have with WC is the drive. I would probably not be interested in carpooling though. At least not the first semester. It's only about 25 minutes depending on traffic but with TCC being right down the street....

I think the pass rate for TCC last year was around 89% or 90%. I can't remember but the past 5 years is on the BON website for each school.

Thanks Loly for posting the link. Here is the 5 year link. It is also helpful.

Yes, I'm sure the smaller class sizes do play a role in the pass rates. Again, as mentioned in a previous post of mine, there is more one on one interaction with the professors available if the class sizes are smaller (something that is a perk for me). From what I've heard, each ADN class at WC becomes very close, almost like a tight knit family. The professors want nothing more than for each of the students to be successful. And while attending Orientation last semester for WC (because I was on the Alternate List), we were informed that in the last semester, you take a mock NCLEX exam. If you don't pass with a 90% (I believe that was the right number), or better on the first try, you are put into a study class to help freshen up your NCLEX test taking skills. If you don't pass with a 90% or higher the second time, you are enrolled in one on one tutor time with a professor. They really work with each student to ensure the knowledge is there to pass the NCLEX. Now, I don't know if TCC offers anything like that because I have not attended one of their orientation sessions, nor do I personally know anyone that has completed their program. But, if WC is going to take the time to make sure each student individually is prepared to take the NCLEX, that's the type of school I would want to attend.
