Hello,
I'm applying to the fall nursing program in January. I'm super excited but I still have some unanswered questions. I tried calling the Nursing Dept at the South Campus and left a message but have not heard a response.
I'm trying to find out what teas version they are testing with in the spring for fall entry. I have read tons of threads from TCC for the past few semesters and it is nice to start a new one for nursing hopefuls like me.
I'm taking Micro in the fall and getting a math class knocked out for BSN. Anyway, hope to get some responses.
Yes, I'm sure the smaller class sizes do play a role in the pass rates. Again, as mentioned in a previous post of mine, there is more one on one interaction with the professors available if the class sizes are smaller (something that is a perk for me). From what I've heard, each ADN class at WC becomes very close, almost like a tight knit family. The professors want nothing more than for each of the students to be successful. And while attending Orientation last semester for WC (because I was on the Alternate List), we were informed that in the last semester, you take a mock NCLEX exam. If you don't pass with a 90% (I believe that was the right number), or better on the first try, you are put into a study class to help freshen up your NCLEX test taking skills. If you don't pass with a 90% or higher the second time, you are enrolled in one on one tutor time with a professor. They really work with each student to ensure the knowledge is there to pass the NCLEX. Now, I don't know if TCC offers anything like that because I have not attended one of their orientation sessions, nor do I personally know anyone that has completed their program. But, if WC is going to take the time to make sure each student individually is prepared to take the NCLEX, that's the type of school I would want to attend.
Wow! It seems like it is a great program. :)
Dreamer and studentcl,You guys have to consider the number of students applying to take the NCLEX at both WC and TCC. 40 students, most likely less take the exam, hence the 100% pass rate on the NCLEX. Tarrant County has anywhere between 100-130, maybe less, taking the exam. The difference in the number of students 40 to 100 makes a huge difference in those percentages. Did I even make sense?
This doesn't make any sense. They determine percentages by the number who pass/the total number of students who take the test. Simple math would show the more people that take the test, the higher the percentage would be if you had the same number of students fail. For example, if 10 students out of 40 fail at WC, then that would be a 75% pass rate, but if 10 fail out of 100 at TCC, that would be a 90% pass rate.
The school that prepares their students better will have the higher percentage, regardless of the number of people that take the test.
I wasn't looking at it as percentages per-say jjw82. I was looking at it as in motivated students, individual personalities, personal problems that could arise, outside influences that have nothing to do with the program, etc...
The more students you add to the mix, the more the school's chances of something occurring outside of their control.
It's just a hypothesis.

Hi, Welcome to the thread. Are you applying at either of these schools because I haven't seen you post before and it seems that you only joined to reply to my post. This was a discussion among the previous posters who were comparing the two schools and it would be nice if you had maybe introduced yourself before chiming in and saying that I wasn't making any sense. I'm very aware how they determine the percentages, I can do simple math and I'm not trying to sway anyone on their opinions about either program.
I think it makes perfect sense. The more students, the greater chances of having more students not completely prepared and perhaps failing the NCLEX.
WC has also been on probation in the past but yet no one has considered that either. Anyway, I'm sure that we are all adults here and we can all make decisions without relying on someones post.
I just want to get in, and then it's up to me to make the most of the opportunity and do well on the NCLEX. I already have an NCLEX study guide. I've been told that it is wise to prepare for the test the whole time you are in school. I think we are all motivated and will all do great and we have lots of help and support right here.

I apologize, where are my e-manners, I didn't realize I had to introduce myself to post on a thread. I have a business degree and have contemplated getting into the nursing field, so I've been lurking on this forum for quite a while without actually registering. You asked if you made sense, so I answered your question.
The number of students is independent of pass rates. I can see what you're trying to say, but a school won't have a higher pass percentage just because it has less students taking the test. If anything, the law of percentages show that the higher number of test takers, the higher the pass rate should be, which i illustrated with the example I gave you.
If a school prepares its students well, it should have a high pass rate regardless of the amount of test takers. WC takes less students so it can place more emphasis on the individual student, which is why they spend so much time preparing their students on the NCLEX, which was stated previously. The fact they have a higher pass rate has nothing to due with the amount of students that are taking the test, but the effort they put into preparing their students.
I wouldn't say that one school is better than the other. It really is a matter of personal opinion. What one person likes in a school may be different than some one else. I was posting that the percentages were important to me. It reflects directly on the program and instructors IMO. Obviously to others it doesn't really matter. Most will pass the test regardless of which school we attend. Most will go on to be nurses as planned. As of now, I really don't think I will be getting into Tcc so I will just stic to the WC posts. This one has left me feeling not so great. Good luck to all of you!
Glad you joined us jjw82. :)
I wonder, so many of us already have a 4yr degree (I have a BS from TCU), to everyone that wishes to participate... why are you choosing to go back to school for nursing?
For me, it's job security. Our 26yr. old business failed during the recession, and I don't want to end up a homeless bag lady one day. Plus, the kiddo graduates Texas Tech in May, and now I feel like a kid out of high school again. I have my whole life ahead of me, it's MY TIME.
Anyone else want to add their reasons for choosing nursing?
I called and asked about the letters.....lol I know....I just am feeling very anxious! I was told that I should call back the first week of April and they would have a better idea. She also re-confirmed that there were over 300 applicants. I had wanted to know if we would get the letters before summer registration since you now have to pay the day you register. I didn't want to have to register and pay for a class I wouldn't need if I was accepted. I also asked about re-applying for the Spring just in case, and I was told that most things would be the same but they may be switching to the HESi for the Spring 2012 application period....... just thought I'd pass the info along

I also considered applying at Hill College and El Centro but I just can't justify either of those drives. When I talked to someone at Hill college, she said they only do one class per year, not every semester. I am just hoping for things to work out for me at TCC or WC. I did notice before that El Centro pass rate went way down in 2010 which left me with a few questions about how the program is going, so I figured I would just scratch that idea. Plus I needed 2 other classes to apply there.
