have you taken any of these classes online: Psychology, Anthropology, Sociology

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

Hello Everyone,

I am starting my year long journey of taking pre-reqs for my nursing school. I have signed at a local community college here in Charlotte, NC, CPCC for the following classes. Sociology, Psychology, and Anthropology. They are all 101's.

Has anyone taken these classes online? If so, how are they, what is the course work, assignements, conferences, tests, exams, quizzes like?

The reason I need to know is because school starts 08/16/2010. My due date is 09/02/2010. I already have purchased my books and materials and have started to read. Is this doable???? I will be home on maternity leave for over half the semester. I will have a newborn and a 2 year old. My mother will be here to help me full time(she is retired).

Please let me know your experiences. I have a low undergraduate GPA. I have a goal to make straight A's in all my pre-req courses. I have a little while before I can drop and get my 100% refund. Any advice, words of experience would help.

I did all those online. The difficulty depends on the instructor. Some take it on themselves to assign loads of discussions and mini-papers because they want to make up for the lack of classroom face time. My Sociology class was a bunch of open book tests that were available at the beginning of the semester. You bet I worked ahead and finished them before my 4th class started! I would recommend looking at ratemyprofessor.com to pick the instructor whose philosophy mirrors yours.

I took Psych online and it was fairly easy...Two discussion questions and a quiz each week plus a research paper...Like the poster above said, it depends entirely on your professor.

Sociology online for me was not a walk in the park but not all that hard either. It should be something you can handle.

I took Psychology online....really easy. I discussion post per week....2 quizzes the entire semester....2 main assignments. Try to do your research on the instructor to gauge their requirements.

Hi,

I took Sociology and Psychology online. I had a research paper for both classes. Sociology was easy, because my instructor let us take the exams at home-open book :D . But the research paper was really hard and took a lot of my time. (30% of my grade). Psychology was OK. All depends on you. Some people are better in classroom, and I agree with the comment that you should look at at ratemyprofessor.com to pick a instructor. It helped me a lot. Hope eveything works out for you.

I took Introduction to Psychology and Life Span Psychology online. We had discussion questions and timed exams. It wasn't too bad. I got high A's in both of those classes. I have a 7 year old and a 17 month old at home. You can do it!!!

I took almost all of my pre-reqs online and didn't have a problem. General and Developmental Psych, Sociology, Humanities, A&P I and II both with labs and Microbiology with lab (as well as a couple of my gen ed classes). The hardest classes were the science classes. The main thing you want to do before registering for online classes is some investigative research.

My favorite website right before registration opens is ratemyprofessors.com. I figure out what classes I need in the upcoming term and go online to the school's website and see who is teaching them. I'll research each professor on ratemyprofessors.com and rank them in order of easiest to most difficult. When its time to register I just go down my lists and see which classes are open for the best professors.

Some people think this is cheating the system, but I see it as doing what is best for your GPA. I don't look for the professors that give out all A's, I look for the ones that have high ratings when it comes to fairness and class involvement. If there's a class I need and its given by two different people, will I choose the one that has weekly tests and grades on a curve, or will I pick the one that has a mid term and final only and makes their grades more on class participation and involvement?

Just do your research and you'll be fine. Good luck!

I don't see how that is "cheating the system". I believe it's just smart. You know that saying: work smarter, not harder. I do that all the time. Regardless if the teacher is easy or not, my main concern is if the teacher is approachable or not...

I've taken all my pre-reqs up to this point. That included 2 psych classes, a soc class, history, poli sci, both my english classes and I'll be taking one health class next semester. All my teachers have been great on line. My 2 psych classes were the same teacher but different psych classes. She didn't give any mid terms, finals or any papers due. She did give weekly quizzes though, sometimes 2 at a time. She wasn't easy, but she definitely wasn't hard. My soc teacher had a midterm and final, a weekly quiz and weekly discussions, also weekly "what do you think" type thing.

Some people I know have taken their sciences on line. but I'm not even trying that!!!! I need in class instruction for that and my language.

You can totally do it! The newborn will sleep a lot and your 2 year old will probably take naps too but even still if your mom is there to help you full time then I dont see why you wouldnt be able to do it.

I was working toward a bachelor's degree online and I have taken all three of these online, and they were all five weeks classes. It is TOTALLY doable. They're 101 classes, so nothing that requires a TON of time. With a newborn and a two year old, I think it's a smart option. Then you can work school around when YOU need to, rather than the opposite. :D

I took Dev Psy online. It was very doable. I would log in everyday to see what I needed to do, complete assignements, but the exams had to be at a testing site on campus. You can do it!
