thanks everyone for your input. I appreciate your honesty and opinions. it is something that I need to really consider before I go further in my education. Stephlump right on!!!! I was trying to say that, however, was so peeved that I could not think straight...

It didn't dawn on me until just right now, don't ask me why, that my choice of NOT getting a flu shot will NOT get me into a nursing program. The director at my school of choice basically stated "it is a requirement that you receive one, however you can sign a declaration that you do not wish to receive one." Then I asked, "would that inhibit my chances of getting into the program?" She replied, "well, the facilities in which we work with it is required due to you working with elderly clients; If you do not wish to get the flu shot perhaps you should look into another career." *****?? (excuse the language) I have worked in nursing homes, health centers, private duty, home health agencies, visiting nurses association, hospice AND THEY NEVER REQUIRED me to ever receive or even ASKED if I have obtained a flu shot!!! (mid 90's) So, anyone please tell me my dream of becoming a nurse is already dead because I REFUSE to get a flu shot???!!! seriously??? I am so upset right now!!!

i had my first kid at 31 and my last at 39. (4 total)... you can graduate and still work a good 4-5 years before you have a kid... pending on how many you want... that's my 2 cents.

I am a stay at home mom to four kids age range 3-11. I have taken my time with the prereq's and will apply jan 14 to start in Aug '14 my youngest will be 4 only in preschool. I will then have a 3rd, 5th and 6th grader PLUS after school sports, music and LIFE. My husband now commutes 2 hours to and fro work daily but his new job will be 10 min away by the time I start. He also coaches football from July-Jan. With that being said: my kids are very dependent and attached to me, but I have been telling them since I started my first prereq that I wanted to be a nurse and I am taking classes to do it. this is 3 years in the making now. I will be graduating with my AA in Sociology in May; and finishing my sciences for my Aug '14 start date (anticipated). I have heard the stories too; but being that I have explained and showed them by studying alongside with them; family close by and know how much work I will be counting on them for back up sitting etc...we as a family look at 2-3 years down the line. When it is all done and all the things our family will be able to have and achieve. Yours are still young for school, but believe me, when your finishing your prereq, your kids will get use to you having study time and school time. If it's something you really want iwth all of your heart you will get there and your kids will be fine. It's good to get daddy and kid time too! its a win win situation all across the board. good luck and never give up dreaming! follow your passion! I am!

I on the other hand would write her up and bring it as far up as the chain command would allow me. Its allowed because people choose to ignore it; wanting to avoid confrontation. I feel sorry for the whole floor who has to deal with this. If the cna is treating YOU like that, I can imagine what shes doing to the patients. If your command in charge will not deal with it, contact your OMBUDSMAN office and file a complaint with them. I know it's extra work on your end, but you will sleep better knowing you are in the right and did the right thing and eventually could get that person fired. Period.

Hang in there! there is a light at the end of the tunnel! I too am ALMOST done with my pre-reqs... but I took the long route as I am also pursuing my AA degree at the same time. I also am applying to a BSN program (as well as ASN) so yes, more classes. Fortunately, most of the BSN pre-reqs are the same as AA pre-reqs and the overall IGETC (california) to get into any university. With that said.... most pre-reqs suck, but all in all I love learning!!!! So just stick with it. See the end goal and keep chugging along!! You can do it if you really want, and I know this has probably been said time and again, but it'll be here faster than you know it!!!!!

Amac and LexiG, I too am planning on attending VC RN program I should be able to apply in March for Fall 2012 start date... Hope you don't mind I just jumped in this conversation!

Add me to the list. I'm 41. will be 45 when I'm done... BSN. (hopefully or ADN) either or... I'm not stopping there. I'll be working while pursuing my Nurse Practitioner concentration in Gerontology. this semester has been a difficult one for me... 1 class is WAAAAAAAAAAAAAY hard, another great, and one that is sooooo boring that I fall asleep reading the book.... good thing is I finally see the light at the end of the tunnel. At the end of this year I will have at least my AA. by this time next year I will be starting either the BSN or ADN program. Push through it.... I've "given up" at least fifty times during the most difficult times with my pre-reqs (just out of boredom) with the sciences though, i was excited and yearned to learn! If I wasn't pursuing my AA as well, I would be entering a ADN THIS fall... but my hopes of getting into a BSN are first and foremost. Anyway. I think I blabbed about nothing. I'm tired. got up at 5a to study... yawn... Good luck to you and remember, you're going to be 45 or 50, or 51, etc... anyway... might as well be doing something you'll enjoy! ciao!

with that low of a passing rate, I would NOT want to go their program anyway! I could see why it's so low with instructors like that. DO NOT GIVE UP YOUR DREAM!!!! so what if you had trouble with the microscope! who doesn't at times? it gets better with time, like everything else!!!!! OMG! I cannot believe she said that. Maybe she just has it in for men????? I would report her to your dean. really. that is just not acceptable. period. CHANGE SCHOOLS!

I have to agree with the previous posters about it depends on where you are, who you know and what your skill level is. I know 2 adns who got jobs within 3 weeks to 2 months FRESH out of school... sooooo i really truly think it depends on the individual person. Maybe those who are not getting jobs have other factors that come into play when applying or interviewing. maybe those who are NOT getting the jobs try and "hire" an interview coach. 10-1 it's the interview that's not getting them the job. And, hate to throw this out there, but if the "nurses" who went into it strictly for the "money", hospitals, LTC, home health agencies are going to see right through you and NOT want to give you a job... Sorry. I know that if i were an owner of any of the above mentioned, I would not want to ruin my reputation on someone in it strictly for the money....

I know it sounds "insulting" but it's an INTERNSHIP. Some places don't even pay for interns. So you can either suck it up and gain the expierence and hope that they like you enough to pick you up and keep you; or you can ignore and go on and try to find something else. Though it is low pay; you are getting the expierence you will need to puruse other better career options.
