I work 3-11 at LTC passing meds for 44 patients, hired as a new grad with 5 days orientation. After 3 weeks I'm doing well, but I was talking with my supervisor last night and we were discussing the pay at an office we both worked at when I was a medical assistant. He said the LPN pay stunk at $19/hr 2 yrs ago... That's what they're paying me now! I also get $2 for after 3pm and $1 for weekends, but am I getting ripped off? I had a really hard time finding a job as a new grad, but I just want to know if my pay is fair. BTW, I work in MA.

I think that depends on where you live and work, but I my opinion that sounds a little low...not too low, but a tad low. Around where I live a new grad LPN makes about 22-23per hr working in LTC SNF. But then again I am not working yet. Also did you negotiate your salary or did they offer you that and you accepted? Perhaps when you gain more experience you can negotiate more if the circumstances present themselves for that. I would stay with it if you are happy with the job otherwise. Because give or take a few dollars per hr is nothing compared to the experience you are gaining for your next job if that is the case and then you can ask for more. Just my humble opinion. Good Luck.

Well you should get paid what you think youre worth-but I will send you a pm.I make less than you do.I have been thinking about this a lot lately.I am a thrifty person, and live cheaply/economically-and I just about cant afford basicas anymore. But I guess a lot of people are in my boat right now.

I'm in the same boat as you Bell Jar. If you don't mind me asking, where do you guys live? I only make about 14-15/hr here, which is ave. for the area. But I would be happy with 19-20. I'm even considering moving now, but then you have to consider the cost of living in the new area. I thought what I'm making now would be enough, which it would have been, but I did'nt think my loan payments would be this high and borrowed more than I thought I would have to to get through school. I've thought about going back to school, but don't want to borrow more money. I think my main job (I have 3) would pay for me to go to school, but its not a guarantee and they reimburse you after your done I believe. Plus it would be very difficult to go to school while working FT. btw, feel free to pm me if you don't want to give your locations on here.

Not sure, but it may be because you are a new grad with virtually no experience. It is difficult to compare between jobs, but office positions are usually paid considerably less than facilities. Also, look at the benefits...for example, I work in a city hospital, and LPNs get paid less than private hospitals and LTC, but my medical and union benefits are much better than theirs.

Depends on where you live. That's pay for a new-grad RN around here.

From my viewpoint you are getting a good pay rate. My former employers wouldn't even pay shift or weekend differentials at all, so you are really not bad off. If you can find a better paying job and want to go for it, then one couldn't criticize you; but you are doing ok by my experience. The supervisor was just talking. Don't read too much into the remarks.

Maybe two years ago they didn't pay difs for evenings and weekends?
BTW, you're making more than some RNs make where I live.

Like another poster stated, I guess it would depend where you live. You make more than new grad LPNs were I work. The only shift differentials we get is 0.75 for PM, $1.00 for NOCs regardless of LPN or RN. I think LPNs start out at around the $15 - $17 range where I work.
Do you have fellow LPN grads you went to school with? Compare with them to do an informal wage survey.
P.S. I don't even get a differential when I am the supervisor. Now that is what I call getting ripped off! :)

I'm mentioning this because I notice your former supervisor is a male.

I work at a LTC facility near the Boston area and I make $21.50/ hr to start. I'm a new grad, and it was nearly impossible to find a job within the Boston area. Rate of pay negotiation is quite difficult as a new grad because there's really no history to demonstrate your capabilities and experience as a nurse, and I was soooo desperate to find a job. My rate of pay isn't so great, but it's higher than most other LPN's that I graduated with.
