SUNY Downstate ABSN 2020-2021

Updated:   Published

Hi everyone,

I've started this thread so we can discuss and share our experiences applying to SUNY's ABSN program for 2020. This is my second time applying. I waited till the very last day of the deadline to submit my application last year (I knowww) since I had taken the TEAS and had just gotten the results. However, I've already submitted my application for the upcoming year and hope to get a call for an interview. Looking forward to chatting with you all.

Sidenote: I really like the upgrade they did to the online application. So much more user-friendly.

@matchamurse / @Episkey - I recall reading somewhere about needing a other background check towards the end too, but I can’t find it anywhere. Where can we find this information? Also, per the form we all accepted - the Liability Insurance provider is NSO.com... is the one you linked to above better or cheaper?

I'm not sure what form did you accept, but NSO is fine. The link is automated by the forum and I do not know anything about it as well.

You need a background check before you start the program and it expires halfway through the program. It's a $140. There is also a drug check that you have to get done before the clinical rotations. I would assume that you will not find this information available anywhere. Try the student handbook, but you may find out many things are not mentioned until it's time for you to get them done. A good idea is to develop a skill of thinking ahead and asking many questions.

hey! anyone who has been accepted or rejected - do you guys still have outstanding courses?

my interview was the beginning of the month, and the other person in my interview already heard back from the school. I have yet to hear anything. I have one class to take this Spring semester and was thinking maybe they would wait until I have this grade, or accept those who have their full credits first? can anyone relate or explain? I'm a little confused!

I was accepted last year while still completing microbio and sociology, if that helps. They just get very antsy about your registration status for those courses.

Hi all :)

Is anyone still submitting their application because of missing requirements? If so, is anyone having issues with their letters of rec? My application is complete besides this, and the MOST trouble I have had is with my LORs getting submitted properly.

I have a few, but sending them through a professional email seems to be an absolute struggle for most of my recommenders lol (mainly because they told me they simply don't use their professional emails). I got one recommender to send it over correctly but for another to do so is seemingly impossible.

I also received an email from admissions today stating that a missing requirement is that I need a LOR from a Science Professor? But the online requirements state " Your letters should be written by a current/former College Science Professor OR an employer/supervisor, OR another college professor." So why can't I use two employers/supervisors?

I finished my science prerequisites almost a year ago. I feel like getting a letter of recommendation from one of those professors at this point wouldn't work.

Does anyone mind sharing where their LORs are from??

I'm freaking out because this is such a simple requirement I am missing and time is very limited!!

Hi everyone!

For those granted an interview- did you just receive a call, or was an email sent to you as well? I receive a lot of calls for unknown numbers and I'm scared I'm going to miss it. Which number should I be looking out for?

If I'm not a candidate, would I have received a rejection letter by now? This waiting game is nerve-wracking.

It should be from a 718 number. They left a voicemail and I called back to schedule it. The only email they sent was the confirmation of date, time and place of the interview.

I called them last week to ask if we would be notified if we did not make it to the interview round. They didn't totally answer my question but it seemed like we won't be notified. So...we just wait! Yes, every NYC area code call makes me jump.

What does that even mean? So we won’t get a rejection letter either?
If we don’t hear anything in let’s say a month from now, we can just assume we weren’t accepted?

I have no clue what that means either.. this concerns me how they are handling admissions. I wonder if this is how the program will be too??

I'm sorry to cause any panic! It's possible I heard them wrong? I just remember that the call gave me the impression that this isn't a standardized process and it's a bit of a free for all. I keep on looking through these threads for flattering/exciting descriptions of the program bc at the moment I'm feeling quite down on it!!

Not to worry - no panic caused! I haven't found any reviews at all about the program, so please share if you do!

Honestly, for the price of tuition I feel like it will mostly be a self-learning/self-navigated environment with people just wanting to get in and out quickly. Organization of state run schools is always a challenge.

Good thing is they have a high NCLEX pass rate (94.1% 64/68 people passed):

I have the same impressions about the program. My application is still in the initial “admissions office review” phase. I sent them an email trying to get some clarity on why it hasn’t progressed and they didn’t answer my question, they only confirmed that it’s still being reviewed by the admissions office. I’m not feeling confident about getting accepted, also not feeling confident about the organization of the program. Someone on this thread who is currently in the program said they have a new director and largely new teaching staff this year. The hospital at SUNY downstate is also part of a new pilot program lead by ny state to decrease maternity mortality rates for women of color because the hospital at SUNY has one of the highest in the country. It’s my assumption that this has something to do with the turnover happening this year, but I could be wrong.

I am getting the impression that their new admissions software is not working as smoothly as they expected. I don't understand how it can take 3+ weeks to update a check list, especially when in late December they updated it almost same day. This is all just pure speculation though, so don't mind me..

When I went to the info session a few weeks back they said that applications are reviewed on a rolling basis.. which is concerning because I submitted mine prior to the original deadline of Nov 30 and haven't heard anything. And, they keep pushing the deadline back (was originally Nov 30, then they pushed to end of Dec, and now it is Jan 31) so it seems they aren't happy with the applicants they already have and are hoping more people apply?? It will be very telling if they push the deadline back a third time.

I guess what I'm really saying is that I'm not feeling confident about getting accepted lol

I also submitted my application before the original Nov 30 deadline and I haven't been called for an interview or rejected yet. My undergrad GPA is good, my pre-req GPA is excellent, and my TEAS result was excellent so I'm assuming my resume isn't what they are looking for. I also don't feel confident about getting into the program. I just wish I would get rejected already because I have to now apply to other programs while still thinking what if. I'm tired of spending all this money on application fees, classes, entrance exams, prep for entrance exams, transcripts, etc. and still not accepted! I'm not entitled to anything obviously, but all these schools require different things and the money adds up.

Has anyone here applied right before the original deadline (Nov 30) and received a call for an interview?
