SUNY Downstate ABSN 2020-2021

Updated:   Published

Hi everyone,

I've started this thread so we can discuss and share our experiences applying to SUNY's ABSN program for 2020. This is my second time applying. I waited till the very last day of the deadline to submit my application last year (I knowww) since I had taken the TEAS and had just gotten the results. However, I've already submitted my application for the upcoming year and hope to get a call for an interview. Looking forward to chatting with you all.

Sidenote: I really like the upgrade they did to the online application. So much more user-friendly.

@ToBeANurse yupp I took the Algebra CLEP and statistics DSST

Thanks! Do you know if we could take the College Mathematics CLEP test or will they only take the Algebra CLEP? I emailed them but they aren't responding. The College Math CLEP test looks a bit easier and I just want these tests done so SUNY D can maybe grace my voicemail with that golden call!!

@ToBeANurse I think so because it’s considered a college level math, but you should call to make sure. Admissions is usually pretty responsive on the phone. The algebra CLEP wasn’t so difficult. I got a 87 and studied for a week. If you took the TEAS you know they basics. And with CLEPS you just need to pass (over a 50 I believe)

Hello,

Someone mentioned previously that the program includes online classes. Is this for the general absn program or for the honors students? How many online classes will have to be taken for this program?

They should really inform prospective students about this aspect of the program. I was under the impression that all the classes would be in person/classroom setting.

I know it’s sort of misleading. But you have to make the best of it. Brooklyn is a great place to gain experience, where there is a great need for help. I had my first gsw pt there.

During my interview they said there was one hybrid class. I think it’s mostly online but they do have to go in once or twice a month. So on most Tuesdays, their day would end at 4pm, and some it would would end at 7pm.

Honestly I’d prefer the option of having a hybrid/online course as being in a classroom all day could be exhausting.

This is also true

Thank you for clarifying. I had a similar problem with another program I was applying to, where half the classes were online! I wasn't comfortable with that at all and ended up withdrawing my application. They also didn't make this information available online so I was panicking again lol.

But 1 online class is definitely manageable.

Everyone takes the same classes.

In the Summer it was different but only the courses with a related clinical aspects such as psychiatry, medical surgical were taught in person in the Fall. Same goes for the current semester. The rest are online or hybrid. I don't know whats the situation with the curriculum for the next cohort.

Thanks so much for this info. I looked at the course schedule you have, and just wanted to clarify - in the fall, did you have gero, research methods, and your elective online?

Also, do you/ your cohort like having so many online courses?

These courses hybrid except for research methods. Research methods had a kind of forum meeting twice for the whole cohort but not much teaching happened during those.

The feelings about these courses are mixed, mostly because we did not know we will have so much distance learning. On the other hand this approach allows for much more flexibility in terms of time management and scheduling. For one possitive I could mention that currently at our own request we have one day only that we have to commute to school for classes instead of two. Some of us meet on the now-freed-up day to study in groups and complete assignments together. For many of us the end goal of getting a degree is more important than how it happens.

Keep in mind that in academia teaching quality varies from a professor to a professor. Having these kind of classes put together in modules allows to standarize the teaching a bit more. People's learning strategies vary as well, so for some listening to a lecture is time that they could use more efficiently.
