SUNY Downstate ABSN 2020-2021

Updated:   Published

Hi everyone,

I've started this thread so we can discuss and share our experiences applying to SUNY's ABSN program for 2020. This is my second time applying. I waited till the very last day of the deadline to submit my application last year (I knowww) since I had taken the TEAS and had just gotten the results. However, I've already submitted my application for the upcoming year and hope to get a call for an interview. Looking forward to chatting with you all.

Sidenote: I really like the upgrade they did to the online application. So much more user-friendly.

My application status is removed when i go to my checklist and it shows nothing. It used to say screening in progress. Does that mean I’m no longer a candidate? I hope not ?☹️

This is what my status page looks like also. My application page still says "Screening in Process."

To those who have been accepted, what changes did you see on these pages?

Hi @emolls,

Even though you uploaded the documents, it doesn't mean that they've reviewed it and updated your application checklist yet. Admissions said they are using a new system this year and are still kind of working things out, and they also received a lot of documents in the past weeks so they are a bit behind. I submitted something on Jan 7 and they still haven't updated yet so I think we are in the same boat..

Does anyone know the total cost of the program?

https://sls.downstate.edu/bursar/tuition_fees.html

$15,420 total for 4 semesters, including fees (but not textbooks or cost of living)

Calculation:
(4 semesters × $3535 tuition)+
(4 semesters × $25 college fee)+
(4 semesters × $70 activity fee) +
(4 semesters x $155 technology fee)+
(4 semesters x $70 student health fee)

If I may....I see I on the website that the summer tuition is always a per-credit fee, rather than flat tuition fee. I think the summer credit load is quite high, so total will come out closer to 17/18K, but I'm not 100% sure yet. Can anyone in the current program confirm the summer/"per credit" policy?

Yes, Summers are charged at a per credit basis.

I can also add that you should budget paying for the ATI materials that accumulate to about $2500 spread throughout the program. Budget also some pocket change of a few hundred dollars for the as well as the background checks that you will have to repeat once before the end of the program. There is a number of such surprise costs.

Did anyone opt in to get the castle branch badge for $12? I didn’t realize we’d need another background check while in school... wondering if I should try to get it or if it’s a waste?

@matchamurse / @Episkey - I recall reading somewhere about needing a other background check towards the end too, but I can’t find it anywhere. Where can we find this information? Also, per the form we all accepted - the provider is NSO.com... is the one you linked to above better or cheaper?

hey! anyone who has been accepted or rejected - do you guys still have outstanding courses?

my interview was the beginning of the month, and the other person in my interview already heard back from the school. I have yet to hear anything. I have one class to take this Spring semester and was thinking maybe they would wait until I have this grade, or accept those who have their full credits first? can anyone relate or explain? I'm a little confused!

This is not a direct answer to your Q, but more commiseration with your confusion. I submitted my app in Nov then my fall grades in Dec and received confirmation that my fall grades were received in January. I emailed them after this to confirm that the unchecked boxes on my checklist wouldn’t interfere with my application progressing (bc two of the items are outstanding classes I am taking this semester, and one of them was a mistake on their part that we communicated about in Nov), and I was only told my application was being screened by the office of administration. This means my application hasn’t progressed to the office of programming, and therefore isn’t in line for an interview yet. Meanwhile other folks have already received their acceptance letters. I’ve seen others say on this thread that the school is trying a new system this year so it seems like things are generally chaotic. It also seems like in the past people have found out as late as March about acceptance ??‍♀️
