suicide rate amoung nurses

Published

Recently a co worker committed sucide. In the note that she left she stated that she was tired of being told how stupid nurses are and how a "monkey" could do a nurses job. This nurse Was one of the best, unfotunatley the political side of nursing got the best of her. None of us saw it coming.

She was one of the few that stood up for the patient, she would stand nose to toes with a DR when she thought he was wrong. There is always someone that

will find a persons weak spot and hammer away until they distroy the person's self estem. Unfortunately these people delight in destroying another person by lying and setting them up to take the fall for their own incompetence. This is what happened to my friend. The hurt for some of us is so deep that we are ready to quit. A few already have, I am seriously thinking about it. We have been to grief counceling as a group and separtely. I beg anyone that is having problems please get help, find another job, just do something, Nursing is not worth losing your life over. Think of your family and friends.

And to the corporations that do nothing to stop these people that lie, cheat and manupliate others, you are just as guilty as the others. You may as well shot her yourself.:crying2:

This is so very sad. I am sorry to hear this. But I seriously believe this is more to that story than being a nurse leading up to this tragic loss of life. It may have very been contributary, but not a sole factor, I would bet. I am so sorry for this person's loved ones and family, most.

Me too. I am sorry for this individuals family. And yes, there may be more to her pain.

What a painful experience for this nurse's co-workers and family. I am so sorry you have had to experience that. Please accept my deepest sympathies.

I am very sorry too. It is always hard to lose one of our own...especially one who is a role model for many. Could you talk more about who this person was little more...as a person, as a nurse, as a friend...so that we can "honor her" memory with you.

I'm very sorry to hear about your loss.

Suicide is horrid for the survivors. We are left wondering if we could have, should have done more. Talk more here if you'd like.

My deepest sympathy is with all those who's lives she touched. What a tragic loss. Be strong and hold steadfast to His will and faith.

She was the type of nurse that took her job very seriously. She was the first to arrive and the last to leave. On her days off she would call in to check on the really serious patients. She was a real patient advocate. The things that drove her "up the wall" was the unwillingness of the hospital where we worked to stand behind her in order to make the necessary changes. Then those that knew her weak sport took advantage of that. She had grown children, 3 grandchildren and a wonderful hsband. I know that nursing was not the sole cause, one day she just had too much. It was one of those days where we all had 9 total care patients, one of hers coded and upper management chewed us all up and spit us out for not answering call lights fast enough, yet our unit manager was not willing to get her hands dirty. She had paper work to do. If I sound angry I am. Her favorite charity was Samaritans Purse.

A donation to honor all nurses would be great. Thank you all for listening to me and for caring.

It is not what you take when you leave this world behind you, It's what you leave when behind you when you go. She left a great legacy.

I feel so sad hearing stories like this. A friend's son committed suicide the other day...holidays are such a bad time for some and worsen the depression and despair.

I am sure her friends and family are feeling great guilt and sadness wondering if they could have prevented her leaving them.

I'm praying today for all survivors of suicide as well as for those who are in pain and despair...praying they reach out for needed help and support.

Thanks for sharing your story Paytonsnana and hugs to you as well.

I am very sorry to hear about the nurse's suicide. Suicide must be so very difficult for the remaining family members and close friends. Losing a loved one because of medical problems is very painful. I can only imagine how magnified the pain and grief must be when the person commits suicide. :o

I can see nursing and the way things are contributing greatly to a nurse's suicide. If this woman was the kind of person whose entire identity, self worth, and view of the world was irrevokably intertwined with being a nurse, I can see how it happened.

I have experienced deep depressions related to nursing.

I feel so badly for her, her family, and her colleagues.

I am so sorry for your loss. And, I agree that Nursing is not worth losing your life for. My daddy always said" You work to live, you don't live to work". I think that especially comes into play here. You work o sustain a comfortable quality of life, both materially and spiritually. But you sole purpose on the earth is not just to work, so don't ever let work get to you. When you feel it has, quit, and take a break. I know it is eadier said than done and we all have resposiblities to ourselves and our families, but the day you stop being happy with your job, is the day to leave and find what ever else is calling you.
