Substance Abuse Nursing

Published

Hi Everyone,

I was wondering, is anyone out there doing Substance Abuse Nursing? Do you like it? Any tips on finding a job in the field?

I appreciate any input you have.

I would start with the State Positions in your area. Also, the Mental Health Group in your area may have a clinic or facility.

There is always issues with detox (ETOH and Drugs) in Jails. There may be some programs there that you can specialize in.

This Specialty, may have more posts under the Psych. Nursing Forum. Take a look around:

Psychiatric Nursing

I wish you well in this challenging Field!

Specializes in LTC/Sub Acute Rehab.

I am glad to hear someone talking about working in substance abuse nursing, since that is my second choice to work in. Im even more happier to hear someone saying to look into working inside a correctional institution (county jail or state facility) since corrections is my first choice!

You can also check with an in-pt treatment center. At the very least they can tell you where to start.

I worked in a substance abuse facility for 1 1/2 years and loved it. Personally I would not work in Corrections, but imagine even the Yellow Pages would have someplace listed under 'substance abuse' where you could call and get information.

Good luck! Its an interesting field.

How would one get on with the Betty Ford Center? Could you imagine working there? I think that this would be my dream job.

Specializes in Case mgmt., rehab, (CRRN), LTC & psych.

I work in the adult unit of a psychiatric hospital. Approximately 80 percent of the psychiatric patients are being treated for substance abuse/chemical dependency while attempting to 'detox'.
