Stupidest reason to go to ER

Published

ER Nurses/MD's etc.

I am currently writing a "paper" on stupidest reason for someone to come to ER.

ANY input you can send me would be much appreciated. IF you'd like a copy of the FINAL draft, let me know.

THANKS in advance!

PS. My winning entry so far is:

A woman who brought 1 month old baby in at 2:30 (AM of course) because "it won't look me in the eye, It doesn't recognize me!"

Not kidding

Just last night , @ 0200....

Yesterday one of the clinics sent a patient in to the ER with UTI symptoms, becuase they dipped her urine and said the dip was negative, so she must have some other issue.... I looked at the chart they sent over, and the clinic nurse had charted the dip: leukocytes: LARGE. How is that a negative dip??? The lady was diagnosed with a UTI, given macrobid, and sent home. Now, if the staff at the clinic had learned to read properly, this poor lady could have avoided a 3 hour wait in the ER waiting room.....:uhoh3:

A few days ago I saw "Hungry" as the complaint.

have you considered a psych consult? migraines run in my family and i've never heard of this before. but if you have frequent migraines and are "on a different plane," perhaps a good psychiatrist could help you figure things out.

actually a neurology consult would be in order here. the previous poster probably does not need a psych consult. what she is talking about does occur. i experience some of this to a slight degree, both before & after a sever migraine. for me, it is if i am watching myself moving about, i feel unsafe to drive, my reaction times are off. there is a belief that the author of "alice in wonderland-thru the looking glass" ?lewis carroll? suffered from migraines and the stories he wrote describe what the previous poster suffers from.

migraines usually affect females, tend to be "inherited" although in my case, i am the first. at the last np conference i attended (keystone), one of the speakers talked about the prodrome some migraine suffers have, a sensation experience the day before a migraine, he talked about some of the symptoms-"feeling on a different plane" and possibly preventing them with naprosyn.

I just have to put two cents in about migraines.....several years ago my mom was taken to the hospital by ambulance for a severe headache...because she had a history of migraines they decided this was the issue, despite her BP being sky high (they tried to tell me that it was due to pain), after fighting with them for 3 hours for a CT or something she ruptured an aneurysm. This whole 3 hours they kept saying it was just "another migraine, she has a history of them, right?" By time I got her out of that hell hole and flown to where I work at a level 1 trauma, she had vasospasmed and bled again. No going back from there. She died within 72 hours. So, I guess I can say it bugs me when people say that migraines aren't an emergency. I know that there are the drug seekers, etc, but I can't help but wonder if that attitude is what cost my mother her life.

Just yesterday...ER is burning down like any typical Sunday...15 yr old with both of his parents very concerned...c/o CHAPPED LIPS...mad b/c of the wait (that was 3 hours). Yep! Seriously people!!
