ER Nurses/MD's etc.
I am currently writing a "paper" on stupidest reason for someone to come to ER.
ANY input you can send me would be much appreciated. IF you'd like a copy of the FINAL draft, let me know.
THANKS in advance!
PS. My winning entry so far is:
A woman who brought 1 month old baby in at 2:30 (AM of course) because "it won't look me in the eye, It doesn't recognize me!"
Not kidding
that would be major cruel. as a migraine sufferers - any noise hurts. and what most people with migraines won't tell you (cause they are afraid they'll wind up in the nut house - and believe me i've surveyed many migraine sufferers) is that they do not think logically when having a migraine, that they feel like they are on a different plane, that they feel like they are someone else, and many other weird things they do not tell their doctors. you just simply don't "think" as you would when you are "normal". i only say this cause no one knows who i am and i don't want locked up when i have a migraine! and i have never read any of this in migraine literature - why? because migraine sufferers are afraid to speak out. i have talked to up to 50 people who suffer from migraines and they all give similar stories - so this person may not have been in her "right" mind and calling an ambulance seemed to be the correct thing to do. it's been a long time since i've had very bad one - but taking overdoses and doing weird things is common when you have a bad one! and besides childbirth it's the worst pain i've ever had and i suffer from fibromyalgia!
have you considered a psych consult? migraines run in my family and i've never heard of this before. but if you have frequent migraines and are "on a different plane," perhaps a good psychiatrist could help you figure things out.
I had a pt drive 4 hours to our ED, I was stuck in triage, he comes to the window and says " I have a wire stuck in my rectum" WTH? OK sir come on in here and let me get your vitals. While I'm getting his info I ask how it happened. "I was been stupid." (Ya think) In my mind I'm trying not to laugh in his face. The MD comes in and starts to assess him. Pt tells DOC same thing... doc looks at me with WTH look on his face too. Send the pt to admissions and then to X-ray. MD says don't you dare bring that back while I am here (its 30 til shift change)
New MD on now, bring some more back I'm ready to see some new pts OK I say how about this one. He says "What the f***" X ray shows its not in the rectum but the member and all the way into the bladder. MD goes in and says "Dude how did you do that?" He didn't tell doc how either. Makes me wonder is he is to stupid to know the difference between rectum and member or was just too embarrassed to tell the truth. Buys hisself a trip to OR for removal. Ahh I have several good tales from triage. LOL

fever- the tylenol worked for awhile, but the fever came back, last dose 6h ago
woman got drunk and decided her finger she broke a couple years ago was hurting, called the ambulance and asked us to rebreak it and set it correctly, at 3am
woman called EMS for a diaper change, she had pooped and her husband was being seen in the ER- so that makes her poopy drawers our responsibility, EMS refused and she called the cops, cops refused and she developed chest pain, EMS went out and it was a no transport-once she got cleaned up the chest pain disappeared.
Man came in by ambulance. His family called 911 after he fell to the floor and was unresponsive. They did chest compressions until the ambulance arrived. Once he got to the ED, he admitted he was just pretending to be unconscious because he didn't feel like talking to anyone.
WOW!!!! All those family Christmases and I never even thought of this one! Stupid ER visit....VERY smart guy. LOL
We had one come in via medic a few weeks ago because she had a splinter in her finger, and therefore was unable to drive herself... can you say triage waiting room?!
Or how about the one riding home with family on a day with icy/snowy roads, decides to pull over because they think grandma has low blood sugar (known diabetic, but a&o x4, no symptoms), and while she is in the rig... on the side of the interstate getting checked out by the medics, and refusing transport, her family drives away, thereby truly dumping her, and her 90 year-old husband, on the medics. Fingerstick upon arrival at hospital = 89, pt still without s/sx... we ordered her a meal tray, and waited 2 hours for her family to show up. When they finally showed up they were all over my behind running me ragged and trying to rush my discharge of her..... I guess they enjoyed their dinner/movie and were ready to finally take grandma home. Can't even remember what I figured out to put down for her CC!

If it were me, I would have put as CC: BIBA s/p roadside elder abandoment c hunger-no other complaints offered, no s/s distress. Triage intervention: meal & call for pick up

As a ER tech, one thing that stood out in my mind was the guy that decided to use that Nads hair remover on his, um, nads. Major irritation down there. We sent him home with special panties from the burn unit and a salve.
Then there was the inmate I knew both from working as prison guard and as an ER tech. He would routinely stick things in areas of his body they didn't belong. One incident was a pen in which the cap came off and got stuck inside so he went into surgery to get it out.
We also had a REALLY old guy that decided to see if he still had the knack for driving in the snow. He didn't and ended up with a nice lac to his forehead when he went off the road.
I'll try to think of some more. I worked weekend nights there and got some good stuff.
